The author facilitated policy making and dialogue between people from very different backgrounds, for a number of years. The thesis is an engagement with ambiguous and contradictory human reactions to stress while being-in-the-middle of threat and differences of many kinds. These trigger both scapegoating and an urge to mate. The phenomenon is embodied in the symbol and ritual of the pharmakos. The pharmakos ritual is ancient in human experience where in times of crisis, a human being was beaten with fig branches, and led throughout the community to receive the pollution prior to being killed or banished. It has been interpreted as the means of purifying a community of pollution - the scapegoat. There is something more to this phenomenon than purification and the scapegoat. The aim of the thesis is to engage with the phenomenon of the pharmakos, in order to bring back its symbolism and practice to conscious attention in dealing with many demanding situations today. The pharmakos can be approached as a rich experience of moving through membranes between territories or states: of threat and anxiety where suspicion of pollution and causes of contagion must be eliminated; of previous catastrophe evoked in images, forms and associated feelings from memory (personal, cultural and archetypal); of curiosity and roaming in the underworld to observe the unknown close to the edge of life, death, discomfort and disorder, both psychologically and actually; of a psychological preparation of one’s elements for mating, not knowing from where the elements to be mated with will come. Such images are possible and encountered in a journey of the pharmakos through these states, undertaken in reverie of a kind practised by Gaston Bachelard. The study describes the phenomenon of the pharmakos through four perspectives (historical, psychological, neurological and biochemical) using data in literary, scientific and cultural texts. In the tradition of psychological phenomenology in general, and in the tradition of Les Todres in particular, it 2 will seek meaning in a “more than words can say” experience of the body. Thus the data from texts is amplified by the experiential encounter with the pharmakos held in the body of the author, and her lengthy experience of facilitating many dialogue and multi-stakeholder processes in health and medicines in Australia, developing countries and international settings. The thesis demonstrates how the metaphors of the scapegoat and pollution (predominant in the historical perspective of the pharmakos) can be de-formed by imagination and penetrated to a closer point of contact between the experience within, and interaction with objects or people encountered in the world (in psychological, neurological and biochemical ways). This liberates a capacity for curiosity in the moment of greatest threat (the goat held within the scapegoat metaphor). It uncovers a thirst for creative fertilisation in a complex reality (akin to the biology of the fig held within the images of figs hung around the neck of the pharmakos, and the beating by fig branches in the ancient ritual) where opportunities are out-of-synch with one another, and one feels the discomfort and even horror of being scarred, pierced and betrayed by those who are different. Thus the thesis organises itself around the images of the scapegoat, the goat and the fig which were the visual images encountered in the journey of the pharmakos. The narrative follows these metaphors in the sequence in which they arose experientially, as the pharmakos sought gaps and crossed between them. By attending to the pharmakos symbol, one can stare at what constitutes danger: at guilt in the air surrounding those attracting an accusation and exclusion; at the threat and emotion felt in the space between life and death, suffering and cure, the trauma of life as it is, and its infection in memory. New metaphors of the pharmakos bring an awareness of falling into oneself in the face of crisis, difference and destabilising change to make and reach for a connection of fertile elements. With inner and outer recognition of the work of the pharmakos, one can step into the middle of these dynamics within oneself and between people of great difference in values and experience in facilitating encounters with difference and change. 4 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION The pharmakos ritual is ancient in human experience. It has been said by classical scholars that the practice removed pollution and its contagious source from a community.1 It was thus a means of purifying a community experiencing threat. In modern times the pharmakos phenomenon still appears in circumstances, major or minor, of conflict, crisis or destabilising change. A personal experience of the pharmakos arose in the author after a period of rest and reflection, following many years of working in the field of health and medicines as a facilitator, leader or organiser. There is something more to the pharmakos phenomenon than the removal of pollution and the cause of stress. The aim of the thesis is to describe a phenomenological engagement with the experience of the pharmakos from several perspectives, so that the observer may recapture the different aspects of its symbolism that may be attended to in demanding situations today. The ritual is recounted in its basics as the Prologue to the thesis. It appeared to have become a regular and unsentimental practice in ancient times. The thesis explores the intriguing role played in this by the pharmakoi and the notion that they became conduits or porters to the edge - to the underworld - to the gap - of fragility.

Political Sovereignty of the Prelingual In Homo Sacer, Giorgio Agamben proposes a genealogy of the concept of political sovereignty, namely of the one pertaining to the European civilization. (Agamben 1998) Beginning with Roman Antiquity, Agamben’s genealogical account of the European cultural invention of political sovereignty enables a discovery which is of critical importance for the argument we are making here. We will attempt to demonstrate that Agamben’s genealogy of the notion of political sovereignty unravels the immanently pre-discursive grounding of the latter. Namely, his analysis, specifically in Homo Sacer, shows that sovereignty is based upon the founding act of sacrifice of “bare life.” This is the primal sacrificial institution which represents initialization into and of (European) civilization. The purpose of the Roman Argei ceremony, during which the Vestal Virgins harvested made and paraded rush puppets only to throw them into the Tiber, is widely debated. Modern historians supply three main reasons for the purpose of the Argei: an agrarian act, a scapegoat, and finally as an offering averting deceased spirits or Lares. I suggest that the ceremony also related to war and the spectacle of displaying war casualties. I compare the ancient Near East and Rome and connect the element of war and husbandry and claim that the Argei paralleled the sacred marriage. In addition to an agricultural and purification rite, these rituals may have served as sympathetic magic for pre- and inter-war periods. As of yet, no author has proposed the Argei as a ceremony related to war. By looking at the Argei holistically I open the door for a new direction of inquiry on the Argei ceremony, fertility cults in the Near East and in Rome, and on the execution of war criminals.

    The Interpretive Spirit of Borderline Figures JASON WALLIN University of Alberta The future is necessarily monstrous: the figure of the future, that is, that which can only be surprising, that for which we are not prepared…is heralded by a species of monsters. A future that would not be monstrous would not be a future; it would be a predictable, calculable and programmable tomorrow. All experience open to the future is prepared or prepares itself to welcome the future arrivant. (Derrida, 1995, 38–67) Derrida’s notion of the arrivant refers literally to ‘that which or the one who arrives’. It is a feature particular to borderlines, thresholds, and the monsters that emerge at the limin of such ‘marginal’ spaces (1993). From the Old French ariver, ‘to reach shore’ and the Latin ‘ad ripa’, to shore, the arrivant emerges a priori identification and naming. It is in this sense that Derrida (1995) suggests the arrivant as (a)kin to monstrosity, a word that etymologically evokes the presence of omens and signs of portend, demonstrations which both mark and disturb fixed conceptual categories. Marking by way of its exception, the arrivant exposes a metaphysical frame and the will to truth as the Nietzschean will to power.     Title: CHAOS AND CLAIRVOYANCE: APOLLO IN ASIA MINOR AND IN THE APOCALYPSE Abstract: In the Apocalypse interpreters acknowledge several overt references to Apollo. Although one or two Apollo references have received consistent attention, no one has provided a sustained consideration of the references as a whole and why they are there. In fact, Apollo is more present across the Apocalypse than has been recognized. Typically, interpreters regard these overt instances as slights against the emperor. However, this view does not properly consider the Jewish/Christian perception of pagan gods as actual demons, Apollo’s role and prominence in the religion of Asia Minor, or the complexity of Apollo’s role in imperial propaganda and its influence where Greek religion was well-established. Using Critical Spatiality and Social Memory Theory, this study provides a more comprehensive religious interpretation of the presence of Apollo in the Apocalypse. I conclude that John progressively inverts popular religious and imperial conceptions of Apollo, portraying him as an agent of chaos and the Dragon. John strips Apollo of his positive associations, while assigning those to Christ. Additionally, John’s depiction of the god contributes to the invective against the Dragon and thus plays an important role to shape the social identity of the Christian audience away from the Dragon, the empire, and pagan religion and rather toward the one true God and the Lamb who conquers all. Sakellarakis1 welcomed the resumption of the investigation of the Idaean cave on Psiloritis by the Archaeological Society of Athens. He was able ta daim that this investigation had made available, for the first time, evidence that the Minoans had used the cave for religious purposes from. the Early, through the Middle, and into the Late Minoa.n periods: and there was there, he dedared, "explicit and unquestionable" evidence that the "origin of the singular worship of Cretan Zeus, the god who was barn and died every year, lies in the prehistoric, Minoan deity, the young god who personified the yearly birth and death of the vegetation cyde"z. Subsequently E,F. Bloedow3 focused on another Cretan peak, Mt. Iouktas, and in particular on its peak sanctuary, which was investigated by 4 Evans in 1909 and reported by him in The Palace of Minos at Knossos .
