Study Methodology

NORC at the University of Chicago conducted the study in collaboration with the Chicago Project on Security and Threats and the University of Chicago. The survey was designed and written by CPOST. Data were collected using AmeriSpeak Omnibus®, a monthly multi-client survey using NORC’s probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. household population.

Funded and operated by NORC at the University of Chicago, AmeriSpeak® is a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the US household population. Randomly selected US households are sampled using area probability and address-based sampling, with a known, non-zero probability of selection from the NORC National Sample Frame. These sampled households are then contacted by US mail, telephone, and field interviewers (face to face). The panel provides sample coverage of approximately 97% of the U.S. household population. Those excluded from the sample include people with P.O. Box only addresses, some addresses not listed in the USPS Delivery Sequence File, and some newly constructed dwellings. While most AmeriSpeak households participate in surveys by web, non-internet households can participate in AmeriSpeak surveys by telephone. Households without conventional internet access but having web access via smartphones are allowed to participate in AmeriSpeak surveys by web. AmeriSpeak panelists participate in NORC studies or studies conducted by NORC on behalf of governmental agencies, academic researchers, and media and commercial organizations.

Interviews for this survey were conducted between June 10 and June 14, 2021, with adults age 18 and over representing the 50 states of the United States and the District of Columbia. Panel members were randomly drawn from AmeriSpeak, and 1,070 completed the survey— 1,035 via the web and 35 via telephone. Interviews were conducted in English. The final stage completion rate is 16 percent. The overall margin of sampling error is +/- 4.16 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level, including the design effect. The margin of sampling error may be higher for subgroups.

Once the sample has been selected and fielded, and all the study data have been collected and made final, a poststratification process is used to adjust for any survey nonresponse as well as any non-coverage or under- and oversampling resulting from the study-specific sample design. Poststratification variables included age, gender, Census division, race/ethnicity, and education. Standard AmeriSpeak weighting includes a base weight to correct for disproportionate probabilities of selection, non-response adjustments, and sample balancing to Census benchmarks on age, education, gender, race/ethnicity, and geographic population distributions.

All differences reported between subgroups of the U.S. population are at the 95 percent level of statistical significance, meaning that there is only a 5 percent (or lower) probability that the observed differences could be attributed to chance variation in sampling 7
