The Introduction to Fine Art one-year Certificate program is designed for students interested in exploring fine art and related careers. Students experience hands-on training in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and digital media. Students explore the role of artists in society and investigate career paths including the following: professional artist, gallery and museum programming, arts administration and art education.

YOUR EDUCATION OPTIONS Graduates can apply to another program at the College or continue their studies in Year II of the General Arts and Science Ontario College Diploma program. Some credits may be considered as transfer credits towards other college programs. Students may use portfolios prepared in this program to apply for a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) at the university level.

Can I take the program part time or on-line? Students may take the program part time. All of the studio courses in this program occur at the college and in-person attendance is mandatory.

Can I start in January? This program is offered only in September.

How do I know if I am a good fit for this program? This program is designed for students who want to learn more about fine art and related career paths. The Introduction to Fine Art program is ideal for students who want to prepare a portfolio for applications to university studies in a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA). Students also use the portfolios created in this program to apply for college programs connected with the field of fine art. After graduating from the program, many students pursue employment in arts administration and begin exhibiting as practicing artists.

What college programs does Introduction to Fine Art qualify me to apply for? The Introduction to Fine Art program prepares students for continued studies in Photography, Interior Decorating, Applied Museum Studies and Graphic Design. In addition, many students use portfolios created in the program to gain acceptance into BFA programs at universities, including the following: , Concordia University, Ontario College of Art and Design University, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. Students also continue studies at the university level in Arts Administration and Art History.

Will taking Introduction to Fine Art help me with my acceptance into other college programs? Students who graduate from this program are eligible to register for Year II, General Arts and Science. The two-year Ontario College Diploma program begins in September (for graduates of the one-year certificate program) and in January. Year II provides a well-balanced selection of courses in the social sciences and humanities. On successful completion of Year II, students receive an Ontario College Diploma. Graduates from the diploma program may apply for advanced stand- ing at either or the University of Ottawa, if they achieve a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Do I need a computer for the program? This program is part of Algonquin’s mobile learning initiative. All students entering the program are expected to have and use a laptop or mobile computing device.
