You learn through working on the program’s digital publications including the award-winning Algonquin Times community news outlet and Glue magazine, aimed at Ottawa students. Students also produce content that’s aired on CKDJ 107.9 FM, our campus radio station, and contribute to Ottawa Showbox, an citywide music site. Yo u research, write, take photographs, shoot video, develop social media skills and produce digital news using a variety of tools. Supplementing this experiential learning are lectures, workshops and guest speakers delivering a diversity of information and skills necessary for today’s journalist. What equipment do I need? You are required to have a PC-compatible laptop computer for use in the program. The laptop should be equipped with a dual-core processor. The primary software used is Microsoft Word and Adobe Creative Suite, which are supplied by the College. You must have a smartphone to practice mobile reporting. It is also mandatory to bring a DSLR camera which can shoot both still and video images. What if I already have a university degree in an unrelated discipline? Any candidate with a degree from an accredited university in any discipline is eligible to enter the second year (level 3) of the program. You must first make an application throughOntarioColleges.ca . If you wish to apply to the higher level when you make your application, please ensure that you select Level 3. You will also need to make arrangements to have an official university transcript sent to the Registrar’s Office. This transcript should indicate that your degree has been conferred. What about the articulation agreement with the University of Ottawa that earns Algonquin College Journalism graduates both a diploma and a degree? After you complete and receive your diploma, apply for admission to the University of Ottawa Honours Bachelor in Digital Journalism program. If admitted, you receive 45 advanced standing credits and must complete 5 sessions of study (75 credits) at the university. They will accept graduates of the program who have a minimum final grade point average equivalent to 70% or higher. Applicants also have the option of beginning studies at the university, and after completing the five sessions (75 credits), can apply for admission to the Algonquin College program. What are the admission requirements for this program? College Eligibility - Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent. Applicants with an OSSD showing senior English and/or mathematics courses at the Basic Level, or with Workplace or Open courses, will be tested to determine their eligibility for admission; OR Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) certificate;OR General Educational Development (GED) certificate;OR Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the program). Eligibility may be determined by academic achievement testing for which a fee of $50 (subject to change) will be charged. Program Eligibility - English Grade 12 (ENG4C or equivalent).
