Nomenclatural Notes on Some Ginkgoalean Fossil Plants from China

Sphenobaiera biloba S. N. Feng (1977) and S. rugata Z. Q. Wang (Dec. 1984), that are heterotypic later homonyms of S. biloba Prynada (1938) and S.? rugata Z. Y. Zhou (Mar. 1984) respectively. Under Art. 53.1 and 7.3 of the Vienna Code, new specific names are proposed to supersede these illegitimate names. Two other names, viz. Baiera ziguiensis F. S. Meng (1987) and Ginkgoites elegans S. Yang, B. N. Sun & G. L. Shen (1988), were not validly published, because no nomenclatural type was definitely indicated. New species are instituted for the two morphotaxa here. Although the specific name Ginkgoites elegans Cao (1992) was antedated by Ginkgoites elegans S. Yang, B. N. Sun & G. L. Shen (1988), it still remains available for use, as the latter name has no status under the Vienna Code (Art. 12, 37) and thus no priority over Ginkgoites elegans Z. Y. Cao. In compiling the Chinese record of fossil plants described since 1865, several illegitimate and/or not validly published names of ginkgoalean morphotaxa were found. En el Cerro Cacheuta (noroeste de la provincia de Mendoza, Argentina) se relevaron cuatro perfiles de detalle, y en las localidades de Puesto Míguez y Agua de las Avispas se reconocieron siete estratos con plantas fósiles. En este aporte se presenta el estudio sistemático de las plantas fósiles encontradas y se analizan los taxones correspondientes a las Gymnospermopsida: Petriellales, Cycadales, Ginkgoales, Voltziales, Coniferales, Gnetales y Gymnospermophyta incertae sedis. Los grupos están representados por las especies Pseudoctenis longipinnata Anderson & Anderson, Pseudoctenis spatulata Du Toit y Pterophyllum azcaratei Herbst & Troncoso, y se propone una nueva especie Pseudoctenis truncata nov. sp. Las especies se encuentran junto a otros elementos típicos de las asociaciones paleoflorísticas del borde suroccidental del Gondwana. ABSTRACT A contribution to the knowledge of Cycadales and Cycadeoidales present in the Upper Triassic of the Santa Juana Formation (Carnian-Raetian) in the Bio-Bío Region of Chile is provided. The groups are represented by the species Pseudoctenis longipinnata Anderson & Anderson, Pseudoctenis spatulata Du Toit and Pterophyllum azcaratei Herbst & Troncoso. A new species Pseudoctenis truncata nov. sp. is described. They appear to be related to other typical elements of the paleofloristic assamblages from the south-occidental border of Gondwanaland. The main fossil site occurs along a road section with a nearly continuous exposure of continental sediments of the Kundur Formation and the Tsagayan Group (Udurchukan and Bureya formations). The sedimentary environment of the Kundur Formation evolves from lacustrine to wetland settings. The succession of megafloras discovered in this formation confirms the sedimentological data. The Tsagayan Group beds were deposited in an alluvial environment of the ‘gravel-meandering’ type. The dinosaur fossils are restricted to the Udurchukan Formation. Scarce and eroded bones can be found within channel deposits, whereas abundant and well-preserved specimens, including sub-complete skeletons, have been discovered in diamicts. These massive, unsorted strata represent the deposits of ancient sediment gravity flows that originated from the uplifted areas at the borders of the Zeya- Bureya Basin. These gravity flows assured the concentration of dinosaur bones and carcasses as well as their quick burial. -

The type species Nehvizdya obtusa Hlusˇtı´k was first found in the Lower–Middle Cenomanian Peruc Member of the Peruc–Korycany Formation (Bohemian Massif, Czech Republic). Both taxa closely resemble each other, not only in leaf shape and venation pattern, but also in their epidermal structures and the occurrence of resin bodies. The Spanish species, however, is notable for its marked amphistomatic leaves with stomatal apparatus, which have inner folds inside the stomatal pits. Comparison with Eretmophyllum andegavense Pons et al. from the Cenomanian of the Baugeois Clays (Maine-et- Loire, France) allows us to transfer this species to the genus Nehvizdya Hlusˇtı´k. The new combination proposed is Nehvizdya andegavense (Pons et al.) comb. -

Fossil stems assigned to the Cycadales are, however, rare and few descriptions of them exist. Here, a new genus of cycad stem, Wintucycas gen. nov., is described on the basis of specimens found in the Allen Formation (Upper Cretaceous) at the Salitral Ojo de Agua locality, Río Negro Province, Argentina. The most remarkable features of Wintucyas are: a columnar stem with persistent leaf bases, absence of cataphylls, a wide pith, medullary vascular bundles, mucilage canals and idioblasts; a polyxylic vascular cylinder; inverted xylem; and manoxylic wood. The new genus was included in a phylogenetic analysis and its relationships with fossil and extant genera of Cycadales were examined. In the resulting phylogenetic hypothesis, Wintucycas is circumscribed to subfamily Encephalartoideae, supporting the existence of a greater diversity of this group in South America during the Cretaceous. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 170, 436–458. At the Bayo and Cocodrilo Hills (Potrerillos, northwestern Mendoza Province, Argentina) two stratigraphic logs were measured in detail and 16 plantiferous levels were determined. In this contribution the systematic study of the paleoflora is presented. The 23 taxa recognized belong to Sphenopsida (Equisetales), Filicopsida (Filicales) and Gymnospermopsida (Corystospermales, Peltaspermales, Cycadales, Ginkgoales, Petriellales and Gnetales). A late Middle–early Late Jurassic fossil plant assemblage recently excavated from two Callovian– Oxfordian sites in the vicinity of the Daohugou fossil locality in eastern Inner Mongolia, China, was analysed in detail. The Daohugou fossil assemblage is part of the Callovian–Kimmeridgian Yanliao Biota of north-eastern China. Most major plant groups thriving at that time could be recognized. These include ferns, caytonialeans, bennettites, ginkgophytes, czekanowskialeans and conifers. All fossils were identified and compared with spe- cies from adjacent coeval floras. Considering additional material from three collections housed at major pal- aeontological institutions in Beijing, Nanjing and Pingyi, and a recent account in a comprehensive book on the Daohugou Biota, the diversity of the assemblage is completed by algae, mosses, lycophytes, sphenophytes and putative cycads. The assemblage is dominated by tall-growing gymnosperms such as ginkgophytes, cze- kanowskialeans and bennettites, while seed ferns, ferns and other water- or moisture-bound groups such as algae, mosses, sphenophytes and lycophytes are represented by only very few fragmentary remains. -
