1.1 MODBUS Protocol The following describes the functionality of the Modbus App in the form of possible configuration, ope- rating modes and the Modbus register specification. A detailed description of the Modbus protocol and its operation can be found in the Modbus specification (see www.modbus.org). Modbus TCP is part of the IEC 61158 standard.

The Modbus data interface can be used in the following operating modes: n Modbus RTU Slave n Modbus RTU Master n Modbus TCP Slave n Modbus TCP Master 1.2 Modbus RTU via RS485 interface In Modbus RTU Slave mode, the KOSTAL Smart Energy Meter provides its Modbus registers via RS485. Both RS485 interfaces, RS485 A and RS485 B, can be individually configured for this purpose. Details on the connection to the RS-485 socket and the polarity reversal of the interface can be found in the KOSTAL Smart Energy Meter installation manual.

Termination

Depending on the cable length and the number of participants on the bus, it is recommended terminate the bus at both ends with a 120 ohm resistor. By the termination will reduce reflections in the connec- tion. This may happen be absolutely necessary for the reliability of the application.

Settings

First, the slot of the bus and the associated interface must interface RS485 A or RS485 B interface must be clarified. The settings for the respective RS-485 are activated via the interface Interface activa- ted. To start communication via the interface, the Settings can still be saved with Save.

Configuration of the interface

The specific configuration depends on the requirements of the remote site. In doubt the configuration of the remote station should be consulted. n Presetting can contain a selection of preset parameters.

09 / 2020 © 2020 KOSTAL Solar Electric GmbH 4 Advanced: n Modus configures the interface to be either a Modbus master or slave function n Slave address (Modbus slave) sets the address of the Energy Manager in Modbus. This Value can be a value between 1 and 255. n Baud rate sets the baud rate of the connection. n Data bits sets the number of data bits. n Parity sets the parity of the connection. n Stop bits sets the number of stop bits. n Slave addresses (Modbus master) provides one or more addresses of Modbus slaves on. Each address can have a value between 1 and 255 and may only be used once be used. 1.3 Modbus TCP via Ethernet interface

TCP Master

In Modbus TCP Master mode, the KOSTAL Smart Energy Meter writes in the registers of one or more configured slaves. The internal instantaneous value registers can be written and the internal energy value register (see register specification). The KOSTAL / RM PnP register and the SunSpec registers are not transferred via Modbus masters. n Slave address sets the address of a TCP slave. This can be specified in the form of an IP address or a URL. n Port sets the TCP port on which the slave expects Modbus communication. Up to 10 TCP slaves can be configured.

TCP - Slave

In Modbus TCP Slave mode, the KOSTAL Smart Energy Meter provides its Modbus registers over TCP/ IP. Access to this interface requires network connection via Ethernet. The Modbus slave can be reached in accordance with the industry standard under port number 502. n Activate TCP slave activates and deactivates the Modbus slave functionality.

09 / 2020 © 2020 KOSTAL Solar Electric GmbH 1 1.4 Extended Modbus configuration Additional settings for Modbus masters can be made here. These settings are valid for all configured Modbus masters.

Send interval

A push interval can be configured here. The Energy Manager normally sends its measurement data via Modbus master as soon as it is available. If the push interval is activated, the data is instead sent at a regular interval, regardless of when they become available. Only the current measured values are shown here transmitted at the time of transmission, no averages over the interval are formed.

Activate fixed transmission interval switches the push interval on. There must then be a transmission interval either selected from the selection list (from 1 second to 1 day) or user-defined in seconds in which the Energy Manager sends its data should.

Register configuration

Here groups of registers can be selected that are written in master mode should be. This can reduce the system load if not all registers are required become. The following can be selected: n Total instantaneous values: The instantaneous values of the overall system (registers 0–27) n Instantaneous values phases: The instantaneous values broken down by phases (register 40-145) n Total energy values: The energy values of the overall system (registers 512–551) n Phases energy values: The energy values broken down by phases (register 592–791)

A detailed list of the tabs can be opened using the arrow on the right that are contained in the respec- tive groups.

09 / 2020 © 2020 KOSTAL Solar Electric GmbH 2 2. MODBUS protocol description

2.1 Register Specification The data registers can be divided into different areas. The data points of the KOSTAL Smart Energy Meter are coded according to the OBIS standard. In addition, in the register area 40000-40177, the data points are encoded according to SunSpec Alliance standards: n SunSpec Alliance Interoperability Specification – Common Models n SunSpec Alliance Interoperability Specification – Meter Models 2.2 Reading out registers Most data points of the KOSTAL Smart Energy Meter are distributed to several 16-bit registers. This means that an RTU master / TCP client should request all registers of a data point in one and the same request.

Interpretation of data points with multiple registers: In the case of a multi-register data point, the regis- ters with the lower address contain the „mustsignificant“ bits. The „least siginificant“ bits are contained in the registers with the higher address.

Example Principle: A fictitious data point „TotalOperatingHours“ (uint32) is located at offset 0x1000. The data point should contain 2293828 operating hours. n the address 0x1000 contains 0x23 n the address 0x1001 contains 0x44

During the request, both registers are transmitted in the network byte order (Big Endian) as specified by the Modbus specification. A „Read Holding Register“ for both registers provides 0x00 0x23 0x00 0x44.

Example conversion:

In order to read the referenced active power (+), the (integer) values of the „holding registers“ 0 and 1 can be used:

Active power+ [W] = ({register 0} · 2^16 + {register 1}) · 0.1 [W]

In order to read out the related active energy (+), that is to say the related active energy over all phases, the (integer) registers 512 to 515 can use:

Active energy+ [Wh] = ({register 512} · 2^48 + {register 513} · 2^32 + {register 514} · 2^16 + {register 515}) · 0.1 [Wh]

09 / 2020 © 2020 KOSTAL Solar Electric GmbH 3 2.3 OBIS key figures system So-called OBIS codes are used to transfer data and differentiate between the various measurement data from a data source. OBIS stands for Object Identification System and is used for electronic data communication in the energy market.

OBIS key figures consist of six value groups (A-F) from the combination of which the speci fi cation of a value is derived. They are shown in the form A-B: C.D.E * F.

The specific OBIS codes used in the Energy Manager are described in the document attachment depending on the data source. The OBIS key figure system in version 2.0 (status: 02.02.2009), which is based on DIN EN 62056-61: 2007-06 and can be found at edi-energy.de, serves as the basis. The indi- vidual groups are explained below in the context of the KOSTAL Smart Energy Meter. Note: The values of groups A and F are fi xed, those of the remaining groups are variable.

Group A (medium)

A = 1 (electricity)

Group B (channel)

Used to differentiate the three possible data sources: for „“ values: B = 0 for sensor values: B = sensor ID + 1 for group values: B = group ID + 100

Group C (measured variable)

Key value of the resulting measured variable according to the OBIS key figure system

Group D (measurement type)

Key value of the type of measurement used according to the OBIS key figure system

Group E (tariff level)

Key value of the tariff, mostly E = 0 (total)

Group F (pre-value counter)

F = 255

09 / 2020 © 2020 KOSTAL Solar Electric GmbH 8 The KSEM/RM PnP register contains information on the identity of the device. n ManufacturerID is a static value that contains the ID of the manufacturer. An overriding SCADA sys- tem can differentiate between different devices on the RS-485. n ProductID is also a static value that allows the identification of the specific product via this key. n ProductVersion is the version of the hardware of the product. n FirmwareVersion is the version of the software of the product. n VendorName and product name include the name of the manufacturer and the name of the product as strings.

All strings are filled to their full length by NUL bytes and spaces (0x32). The Modbus RTU Master / TCP Client should auto-cut them before using the strings.

Notes: 1 Note to avoid off-by-one errors: The SunSpec specification (as found at www.sunspec.org) always refers to register numbers, whereas this docu- ment always refers to register addresses. To access SunSpec register 40001, the register address 40000 must be used, i. Hexadecimal offset 0x9C40. 2 These fields may receive a customer fire request upon request 3 Example: The register M_AC_Freq contains the value 4950 and M_AC_Freq_SF contains the value -2. Then the frequency can be calculated as: 4950 Hz * 10 ^ {- 2} = 49.50 Hz 4 Important Note: Although the scaling factors are given here as fixed values, they should not be considered fixed. The values can change dynami- cally to match the readings. Please always ask the scaling factors together with the associated values and include code to dynamically calculate the values.

09 / 2020 © 2020 KOSTAL Solar Electric GmbH 14 3.6 Overview group register This register area contains group-specific information. There are a total of 48 blocks of group regis- ters. Each register block has 40 registers and corresponds to a group that is con fi gured in the Energy Manager. The group registers are only available if groups have been activated and con fi gured on the device.

The o ff set of each group register block is calculated as follows: offset = 0xE800 + (Gruppen-ID) * 0x0028

09 / 2020 © 2020 KOSTAL Solar Electric GmbH 15 3.7 Overview sensor register This register area contains sensor-specific information. There are a total of 96 blocks of sensor regis- ters. Each register block has a size of 40 registers and corresponds to a sensor that is connected to the Energy Manager. The sensor registers are only available if sensors are activated and con fi gured on the device.

The o ff set of each sensor register block is calculated as follows: offset = 0xF000 + (Sensor-ID) * 0x0028

Start address (dec) End address (dec) Start address (hex) End address (hex) Size Description

61440 61479 0xF000 0xF027 40 Sensor 0 61480 61519 0xF028 0xF04F 40 Sensor 1 … … … … … … 65240 65279 0xFED8 0xFEFF 40 Sensor 95

The register block is the same for all groups. Therefore, only the register block for the first sensor is described in the following table. The OBIS codes are used here for illustration purposes only, as the real OBIS code depends on the con fi gured phase of the sensor. If the phase of a sensor has not been con fi gured, its registers do not contain any values, since the phase is required to calculate the further values from the internal measured values with the help of the voltage and phase angle.
