Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies University of Toronto 2015 ABSTRACT Lesbian and gay archives, particularly those established within the context of the homophile, gay liberation, and lesbian feminist movements, serve as social movement organizations (SMOs). That is, they are organizational and administrative members of activist communities that acquire, manage, and share resources for the purpose of collective action for social change. Archives are nevertheless absent from literature on social movements and social movement theory. This project was designed to expand on current research in the fields of archival studies, social movement studies, and sexuality studies to better understand the experiences of lesbian and gay archives. A multiple case study was conducted at four community grown archives: The Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives, the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives, The June L. Mazer Lesbian Archives, and the Lesbian Herstory Archives. Site visits took place over six months in 2013 and 2014, during which time interviews were conducted with 33 community archivists, volunteers, and community partners. In addition, more than 20,000 pages of organizational records related to the founding and development of these archives were reviewed. By tracing the emergence, development, and resource struggles of four lesbian and gay archives, this dissertation shows how these organizations have been shaped by broader movement goals, local geographies, socio-political structures, and the particular interests and energies of those who have nurtured their collections over the years.

Goings ABSTRACT This project uses the history of the National Organization for Women (NOW) to explore the relationship of liberal and radical elements in the second wave of the U.S. women’s movement. Combining oral histories with archival documents, this project offers a new perspective on second-wave feminism as a part of the long decade of the 1960s. It also makes location a salient factor in understanding post– World War II struggles for social justice. Unlike other scholarship on second-wave feminism, this study explores NOW in three diverse locations—Memphis, Columbus, and San Francisco—to see what feminists were doing in different kinds of communities: a Southern city, a non-coastal Northern community, and a West Coast progressive location. In Memphis—a city with a strong history of civil rights activism—black-white racial dynamics, a lack of toleration for same-sex sexuality, and political conservatism shaped feminist activism. Columbus, like Memphis, had a dominant white population and relatively conservative political climate (although less so than in Memphis), but it also boasted an open lesbian community, strong university presence, and a history of radical feminism and labor activism.

Alexander worked in journalism most of her professional life and it was in her capacity as a reporter for Newsday that she came across a press release announcing the formation of the National Organization for Women (NOW) in 1966. Alexander became NOW’s first Executive Director from 1969-1970, was a co-owner of a lesbian feminist restaurant in the Village with partner Jill Ward during the 1970s, and was a founder of Women Against Pornography in the 1980s. She has been present at many significant events of the women’s movement: integrating the Want Ads in the New York Times, the lesbian purge of NOW, the National Women’s Conference in Houston, 1977, and the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. Alexander remains active in the lesbian community on the North Fork of Long Island. Interviewer Kelly Anderson (b.1969) is an educator, historian, and community activist. She has an M.A. in women’s history from Sarah Lawrence College and is a Ph.D. candidate in U.S. History at the CUNY Graduate Center.

    AUTHENTIC WOMEN, MENACING AUTHORITIES: THE RHETORIC OF LESBIAN POLITICS OF FEMINISM’S SECOND WAVE, 1966-1975 by KRISTAN POIROT (Under the Direction of Bonnie J. Dow) ABSTRACT Growing from an interest in the various conflicts centered on the relationship between lesbian and second wave feminist politics, I explore the ways that rhetorical processes of authority and authenticity functioned in discourse from and about the women’s movement from 1966 to 1975. Identified as “menaces” by liberal feminists and truly “liberated” women by radical feminists, lesbians occupied a unique rhetorical place in feminism’s second wave. The dialectical tensions between being at once feminism’s “nightmare” and movement women’s “fantasy” exacerbated considerable conflicts within the movement, and such conflicts are emblematic of the second wave’s broader concerns over identity—both public and personal. In this project, I argue, what was at stake for both liberal and radical feminists was a political identification of “woman” that would remain consistent with the movement’s commitments. As radical feminism theorized the liberated woman and liberal feminism strategized a credible woman, lesbian sexuality threatened and promised the sustainability of feminism’s identity commitment. Although the political nature or “woman” was questioned, the ontological was not. As such, this project seeks to historicize a poststructural critique of the subject through three analyses, which point to humanism’s constraining and dangerous influence on feminism’s sexual politics.
