It's only rock & roll | Pep Saña | Actualitzat el 05/06/2019 a les 17:56 Steve Marriott: El talent (oblidat) de Humble Pie Avui dia poca gent recorda a Steve Marriott, tot i que gairebé segur en algun moment ha escoltat la seva veu. El 20 d'abril de 1991, el cantant i guitarrista Steve Marriott es va adormir amb una cigarreta encesa als dits, havia begut, com de costum. Acabava de baixar de l'avió que el portava dels Estats Units, on havia dinamitat l'enèsima oportunitat de tornar a l'èxit, de fet, encara no havia abandonat l'aeroport quan va protagonitzar una altra de les moltes discussions amb la que era la seva tercera dona. Se'n va anar a casa sol, va pujar a un taxi i va marxar. Ningú el va tornar a veure amb vida. Avui dia poca gent recorda a Steve Marriott, si preguntes per ell gairebé ningú sabria dir qui és, tot i que gairebé segur en algun moment ha escoltat la seva veu. No hi ha cap dubte però a l'hora de situar-lo com un dels millors vocalistes de la història del Rock britànic, i el seu enorme talent musical està fora de tot debat, però pel gran públic ha continuat sent una veu anònima. Robert Plant, òbviament, era un fan de Marriott, és més, el propi Marriott el va recomanar per entrar a Led Zeppelin després de declinar l'oferta de Jimmy Page. Plant el va copiar de manera força descarada, però a Marriott mai li va importar gaire, es de suposar que s'ho va agafar com un elogi. No cal dir que era tot un atreviment, i més per un cantant masculí, intentar posar-se en la pell de tota una Tina Turner. Una bogeria? No, perquè Steve Marriott estava a tal nivell que podia no només sortir-ne airós, sinó competir amb l'original i fins i tot superar-lo!. En els seus inicis, en època dels Small Faces, formava part d'aquell moviment denominat Mod, que també tenia a les seves files a integrants dels The Who, entre d'altres. Els Small Faces eren una banda de Rock Psicodèlic liderats per Marriott, juntament amb el baixista Ronnie Lane, el teclista Ian Mclagan i el bateria Kenney Jones. La dissolució dels Small Faces al 1969, va portar per una banda al naixement de Humble Pie amb Marriott, i per l'altra The Faces, amb Lane, Jones i McLagan al costat dels ex integrants del Jeff Beck Group, el cantant Rod Stewart i el guitarrista Ron Wood, dels que ja en vaig fer un l'article en aquesta secció el 14 de setembre de 2016. A aquests se'ls sumaria el bateria Jerry Shirley de Valkyrie. Com que Frampton i Marriott eren, per a aquella època, uns ídols dels adolescents, els mitjans van catalogar al projecte Humble Pie com un Súper Grup, creant gran expectació amb el que en sortiria d'aquí. Alguns van arribar a dir que Humble Pie va ser la primera banda de Heavy Metal, no pel so sinó pel volum que feien servir. És interessant remarcar que Humble Pie és una cosa a l'estudi i una altra ben diferent en directe. A l'estudi es pot definir el so com una barreja de R&B, Boogie, Folk-Rock, Country-Rock i Hard Rock. En canvi en directe aquest Rock potent de la banda s'acosta molt al Heavy Metal, això sumat a la fantàstica exageració de Marriott amb la seva veu que recorda molt a Janis Joplin. De seguida s'edita el primer LP de la banda titulat As Safe As Yesterday Is (1969) que inclou l'èxit Natural Born Boogie (n° 4 a G. Bretanya) i les destacades Stick Shift o Desperation (un cover dels Steppenwolf). Els temes de l'àlbum son un suau Hard Blues, Folk i amb peces de Rock més potent, però no els arriba per projectar-se com una banda innovadora ni per aconseguir una notorietat massiva. Començaven a apuntar les composicions de caire romàntic de Peter Frampton com Take Me Back i Only You Can See, les de Marriott són els temes més elèctrics, també incloïa un cover de Buddy Holly, Heartbeat. Un LP gairebé acústic que Marriott considerava que era una ?sobirana merda?, així que decideix agafar el control de les composicions, endurir el so i treure's l'etiqueta de banda tova. Humble Pie - Cold Lady V?deo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpEvznpWAKg Aquesta grandíssima banda havia començat a caminar amb aquest parell de discos on encara hi havia restes de la influència dels Small Faces, l'anterior banda de Marriot. Psicodelia i un clar so sixties, i només un petit apunt del que podria ser la banda on tots participaven en les cançons i on encara Marriot no havia agafat el timó del grup, però a partir d'aquí la cosa canviaria. L'àlbum Humble Pie (1970), el primer amb una discogràfica gran, A&M Records, no esborrava del tot l'estil de la banda dels seus dos primers discos, encara mantenia alguns temes Folk, però el protagonisme ja recau en el Boogie Rock i el Blues d'estil més roquer. Endureixen el seu so i Marriot comença a donar mostres del que pot fer amb la seva veu. Destaquen la fantàstica Live With Me, I'm Ready (cover de Willie Dixon) o Suckin' On The Sweet Vine entre d'altres. Mentrestant, Frampton, no estava del tot d'acord amb la direcció que agafava la banda i considerava que la seva aportació disminuïa per culpa de Marriott.     SAIICHI SUGIYAMA BAND EPK (July 2016) British blues-rock guitarist Saiichi Sugiyama and his band are touring the UK in September 2016 ahead of their new album release next year. Saiichi Sugiyama Band is a group of musicians hailing from Surrey/London that harks back to the halcyon days of rock and soul, 1965-1974, brought together in 2010 by the guitarist/composer Saiichi [pronounced: “sigh-eee- chee”], who has a career spanning 25 years as a solo artist in the British blues scene. The core of the group is Rietta Austin (lead vocals), Saiichi Sugiyama (guitar/vocals/composer), Ben Reed (bass guitar) and Mune Sugiyama (producer/arranger/drums). When playing live, the group are augmented by touring musicians including Stuart Dixon (rhythm guitar), Katrin Yr (lead vocals) and Wez Johnson (drums). The former members Lizzie Hibbert (lead vocals) and Dave Munch Moore (keys) also record with the group in studio. The group has been spending the past months working on their new studio album in various recording studios, a follow up to the studio live album “the Smokehouse Sessions” from 2014. The new album will include a track entitled “Melting Away”, written by Saiichi and featuring the late bass hero Andy Fraser, ex-Free and composer of the 1970 smash single, “All Right Now.” The initial inspiration for “Melting Away” came to Saiichi while on a trip to his native Japan. To Saiichi the melody was reminiscent of Free guitarist Paul Kossoff, who died in 1976. Creating a demo when he returned home to the UK, Saiichi came up with bass parts that brought Free bassman Andy Fraser to mind.

    Colosseum – 5 x Live in Concert – Restored & Remastered in 2020 Colosseum sind fraglos eine der beeindruckendsten Live-Bands, die der Autor je auf der Bühne erleben durfte – und trotz Reunions und anderer „zweiter Chancen“ (vgl. JCM) hat man sie gefühlt doch trotzdem einfach viel zu selten erlebt. Das ist auch nicht mehr aufholbar, seit Kopf, Seele und Sticks der Band in Gestalt von Jon Hiseman 2018 viel zu früh das Zeitliche segnete – übrigens unmittelbar nach einem weiteren ausgezeichneten Konzert… Und was kann in einer solchen Situation überhaupt Trost bieten, was kommt da wie gerufen? Bislang unbekannte Live- Aufnahmen natürlich! Doch nicht etwa fragwürdiges Bootleg- Gelumpe, sondern gehobener Standard von Repertoire Records. Und was vermutlich noch erheblich wichtiger ist: von keinem Geringeren remastered and restored as from our very own Joachim Heinz Ehrig alias Eroc! Schlagzeug- „Gladiator“ Jon Hiseman und Saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith hatten sich bei der heute allein schon wegen der sich ergebenden Band-Stammbäume hyper-legendären Graham Bond Organisation kennengelernt, wo Hiseman 1966 immerhin so eben mal Ginger Baker abgelöst hatte. Und trafen sich beiJohn Mayall’s Bluesbreakers wieder – einem schier unglaublichen Talentschuppen, wo man zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten auch Eric Clapton, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Taylor, Walter Trout, Robben Ford oder Ainsley Dunbar hätte über den Weg laufen können.
