On 25th August - a very warm evening - we had a most entertaining talk given by Ian Currie on Weather Folklore - Fact or Fiction. He illustrated his talk with beautiful slides of cloud formations, explaining what they meant and what one should look out for when reading the signs. His talk was a mixture of meteorological science and old wives tales regarding the weather. His enthusiasm was much appreciated and he fielded lots of questions. Yet another reminder of our Coffee Morning on 8th October. There will be lots of bulbs on sale, a raffle and a cake stall. Tickets for the Annual Dinner which is to be held on 5th November, will be on sale at the Coffee Morning. DON’T MISS IT! Gales of laughter are seldom heard during the talks in the Peggy Pike room but were certainly heard on 15th September when Russell Bowes delivered a run down on the history of many of our most useful garden tools. Historically well researched and illustrated by quirky yet entirely accurate slides, his talk was informative and extremely entertaining. One of the most enjoyable evenings we have had and we look forward to a return visit next year. Regular meetings are held at 7.30pm in the Peggy Pike Room of the Village Hall on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Guests are always welcome. Frances Horton - 840550

13 Elham Valley Cricket Club Junior Section needs your help!

EVCC has had a very successful season.

The U9 Kwik cricketers took part in 5 tournaments, hosting their own successful day and visiting Wye, Folkestone, Nonington and St Lawrence and Highland Court. This gave the opportunity for the children to compete, apply their cricket skills and most importantly become a team.

The U11s won the Saxon Shore Cup, only losing one game in the League to Deal Vics, who they finally beat in the cup, the final game of the season proving their determination.

The U13s and U15s took part in the highly competitive Canterbury league and played many games with commitment and spirit. They each came second in the Saxon Shore cup competition to Nonington, who continue to be our local nemesis!

The junior club meets every Saturday morning from May to August, 10am to 12noon, for an all ability session that is fun. It is a sociable occasion for parents too, as there's always tea and cake to keep with the cricket tradition! There are also evening training sessions for U11s, U13s and U15s. All children of all abilities are very welcome to come along.

The junior club can only run with input from volunteers, from those who are willing to weed around the nets, to those willing to manage and coach. Many long-serving volunteers have finally stepped down this year, having devoted years to the club, so we are now desperately seeking new blood! If you could spare some time to volunteer in some way to keep the club alive please contact L. Davis 07535 608218.

Our speaker in August was Pat Marshall who, along with her husband Roger and Labrador Chloe, told us about Guide Dogs. Pat became blind 15 years ago and through the Kent Association for the Blind was put in touch with Guide Dogs for the Blind. After assessments and training Pat was introduced to Chloe, age 23 months, for further training and they are now inseparable, and Pat and Roger continue to fundraise for both Kent Association for the Blind and Guide Dogs. The competition was won by Daphne Andrews, with Jean Lissenden 2nd, Diana Bennett 3rd and Molly Walker 4th. On the 8th September we were invited to join Elham Circle at their meeting where we enjoyed a musical evening with Lyminge Hand Bells.

On the 19th October Alan Haines will present "A Swipe at the 70's" and we have invited our friends from the Elham Circle to join us. We meet at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall at 2pm and visitors can enjoy their first visit free! For further details please contact Marion Hoare on 862913

At our September meeting we were musically entertained to a wide selection of melodies by the Lyminge Hand Bell Ringers. There was also time for the more adventurous to try the hand bells, and under instruction play a tune. We were also very pleased to welcome a group from Rhodes Minis Evening Circle who joined us for the evening.

OnThursday 13th October, a member of the Fire Service will be advising us on safety in the home. Come and join us and hear what the Fire Service recommends.

All are welcome. Please bring husbands, partners and friends with you.

19 CHURCH MATTERS

Dear Friends The evenings are drawing in as summer comes to an end; but endings always bring about new beginnings. Memories of the fantastic Olympic Games will stay with us for a long time and have made us all proud to be British. Many heroes have been created; Mo Farah, Jason Kenny, Laura Trott, Alan Peaty, Max Whitllock, Mark Cavendish, Callum Skinner, Jack Laugher to name but a few. Batman, Superman, Spiderman, James Bond and Obi Wan Kenobi might all have been one of our heroes when younger and over our life our heroes change. Mine when younger were Mary Poppins, Anne of Green Gables, John Boy in the Walton’s, Henry VIII, Emmeline Pankhurst, Winston Churchill, Cat Stevens, Dame Lady Grey and even Margaret Thatcher. But I never met any of them. What would that have been like? Elisha had the chance to meet his hero. He walked with the greatest heroes of the Jewish people in his day; the story being in 2 Kings 2.1-12 in the Old Testament. It is a great story as Elijah the old prophet lays down his mantle before Elisha and Elijah is taken away in a whirlwind. Young Elisha, as Elijah before takes up the mantle touches the water, calls on God and the water parts. This is all done in front of fifty witnesses. The most interesting part of the story is not this though, but further along from this story, when the same fifty witnesses insist on still searching for Elijah. They cannot believe he has gone, they cannot accept that the chapter is closed. They cannot move into what God wants to do in the present or the future as they are guilty of believing that God’s great work belongs to a day that is over. It is embarrassingly simple to think that the’ hey day’ of the church was when we were young. Elijah did not represent God’s final great work, although some people thought so. God was still at work, as God later in history came to earth as a human-a person. God is still at work today and God’s greatest work may still be ahead.

FUTURE EVENTS

24th February 2017 – a 20s Night featuring a live Jazz Band. An evening of 20s music, film and much more set in Elham’s own Speakeasy during prohibition – you’ll need to drink your alcohol from your best china tea cups! More details to follow Music for Music - We are hoping to arrange a concert of local talent to raise money for the wonderful new piano that Tony Trinkwon has bought for the church. If you are one of the many wonderfully talented musicians in Elham and would like to take part then please get in touch with Janice on 840907 We are all looking forward to hearing Tony play the new piano. It is certainly worth coming to church to hear him play the organ.

It is relationships that sustain us when everything else collapses. I speak reasonable German and deplorable French. Gillian and I have family and strong friendships across Europe. I was previously Archdeacon of Germany and Northern Europe for the Church of England. So I believe that we need to create, build and strengthen sus- tainable relationships with European churches and Christians.

This is why I continue in retirement to serve English Speaking Churches as locum priest not only here but in many parts of Europe. The latest was to the little village church of St. Olaf in Balestrand on the Sognefjord in Norway which, in summer months, attracts vast numbers of tourists. They come from all over Europe and be- yond, most of whom visit the little wooden Anglican Church. Many return for one of the five worship services offered each week. The church is there because the daughter of an English priest was a mountaineer in the 1880’s and married a Norwegian guide. Sadly, she died young and it was her wish that there should be a church to serve the many visitors. So it is an English Church built in a Norwegian style.

It was during our time in Norway when the crazy IS attacked people in Nice and Munich and when Turkey had its attempted coup. Special prayers were said for them and those from all the relevant countries (including Turkey) worshipped with us. The feeling of solidarity was palpable. Relationships and friendships dissolve borders whether political, geographical or ecclesiastical.

So now is the time to do the step-by-step, hard work of building relationships and making reconciliation a reality – not just in the divided communities of the UK, but also across the world. As St. Paul said “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Gal.6: vs. 2). David Ratcliff

The upright piano in the Church Hall is looking for a new home. It would look great “upcycled”. It could be yours for just a small donation to Church Funds. Local delivery can be arranged. If you can provide a last resting place for this interesting item then please call Tony on 07752 142106.
