ELHAM SUMMER FOOD & CRAFT FESTIVAL

We’re planning our Summer Market for Sunday 16 June, 11am – 2pm, in the Square and St Mary’s Church, so please save the date. And look out for us in the May issue of Life magazine – their reporter visited our Christmas market so we’re hoping for a good write up!

Meanwhile, our grateful thanks to everyone who supported the Christmas market by volunteering or attending – as always, much appreciated. And special thanks to our raffle prize givers: P&O Ferries, the Rose & Crown, Gatehouse Farm, and our fantastic traders for donating gifts to the hamper, as well as Geoff Hirst for providing the sound system, Julian and Lin Chambers for loaning us their beautiful vintage shepherd’s hut and sleigh, Mick Woodward for being an excellent Santa, Lizzie Newington - our charming Elf, the Benson-Hookers for the use of their field, Pip Hope for designing our lovely posters and John Clayton for our printing. And what a treat to see the festive donkeys, Dorothy and Della, in all their finery. Big thanks to Ros and Geoff Clements for bringing them along. We’re delighted to be able to donate £350 from our raffle to the Fifth Trust to help them buy a much-needed new 9-seater minibus. And we hope that the winners greatly enjoyed their prizes.

There was a large increase in the number of visitors over the past couple of years, which was great news as this led to significantly more money being raised for the Hospices. We are absolutely delighted to let our friends and supporters know that we raised a fabulous £2468.00. Thanks to everyone who made this possible. Carol Stevens

Christmas Illuminations

Another very successful year for the Christmas Illuminations which help make our village look so wonderful during the festive period. This year we put up 62 trees through the village as well as the large tree on The Triangle.

Not everything went as smoothly as we would have liked, on the day of the village switch-on all of our gazebos on The Triangle were blown down by strong winds! Thanks to Revd Jane Weeks we were able to move at short notice into St Mary's Church and after watching the Switch-on, enjoyed a great evening, singing carols accompanied by the Snowdown Colliery Band.

Our thanks go to members of the Village Hall Committee together with local residents who helped to prepare the trees and put them up through the village. We would also like to thank the following people for their significant contribution: Derek Boughton - for his fundraising Illuminations talk. Ben Wraight - local tree surgeon who helped us put up the large tree on The Triangle and take it down and clear it after Christmas. Tony and Jill Skelton - for once again paying for the larger Christmas tree and The Colliery Band. Fizz Martin and Anna Clayton - for making and serving the delicious mulled wine during the carol singing. Geoff Clements - for collecting and disposing of all 62 trees from around, the village. All in all a great village effort, and we look forward to doing it all again in December 2019! Mark Flight

NEWS FROM ELHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL

Looking forward and looking back During the month of January, the children were asked to think about looking forward to the future and also looking back at the past. They were asked which they thought was more important. The children did not agree that one was more important than the other but they did agree that both were a big part of the lives we lead - the future was exciting and the past was full of memories, most of them happy! The children were also asked to make New Year resolutions. They were asked to think of one that would benefit them and also one that would benefit others. Wellbeing and mental heath At Elham Primary School we take wellbeing and mental health very seriously. It is so important that we put it alongside physical health. 4 to 10 February is National Children’s Mental Health week. We will be using this week to continue to explore ways to make sure our mental health is being looked after. The children will have a chance to take part in yoga and relaxation classes as well as thinking about their breathing and how this can be controlled in different situations. We will also use that week to launch a project working with Wellbeing People. The project is being funded by the (Elham) Community Trust and looks at wellbeing through a variety of resources, stories and fables. Say NO to single use plastic At Elham Primary we are interested in global issues and try and keep up to date with what is going on around the world. A big concern that our children have is the pollution caused by single use plastics. These take years to degrade and many make their way into the oceans and affect the lives of the animals that live there. We are looking into ways to make our school plastic free and have accepted the challenge now named the Turtle Challenge to reduce the amount of single use plastic we use in our school.

The speaker on 15 November was Barry Newman who gave us a most entertaining and swift tour of the year in his allotment. This large area was shown in great detail during every month of the year - luscious beans, juicy fruits and shiny green cabbages - all looking so appetising. A very enjoyable evening even for those who never grow or eat vegetables!

On 13 December the AGM was held. It followed the usual pattern of reports from the Chairman and Treasurer, and included a description with photos of the summer trip to Dorset. The evening was well attended and the business was followed by the Christmas part - tasty food provided by members and wine from the Society.

The speaker at the meeting on 21 February will be Steve Brady, from Radio Kent’s Sunday Gardening, who will talk about growing plants on a patio.

What a lovely Christmas Dinner we all had at the Abbots Fireside on 6 December, all washed down with a little bit of the hard stuff! The atmosphere was great with a log fire, crackers and tinsel. We had a very successful raffle so thank you to all who bought tickets and donated gifts. We also had a Christmas Quiz which was great fun and we racked our brains to come up with the right answers - well we tried anyway!

On 10 January we were treated by Pam Ferris to an overview of an actor’s day. So many amazing people are involved from makeup to costume, from sets to stunts. Pam gave a wonderful insight into her work - including dying twice in one week! Her talk contained many anecdotes which brought laughter and gasps of amazement. All this was followed by refreshments and Christmas cake. Lorri

RHODES MINNIS CIRCLE

We had a festive start to Christmas when the Handbells entertained us at our Christmas party and a lovely Bring & Share tea was enjoyed by all.

On the 27th February we look forward to ‘A Walk Along the Saxon Way’ with Eileen Jennings.

LDS are looking forward to our two productions this year: Summer Holiday and The Pink Panther. In a change to our normal productions Summer Holiday is being put on in June to link with the Lyminge Festival. This is being directed by Ingrid Goodchild and will be on the 14th and 15th June. It will be songs, sketches and readings celebrating holidays, and promises to be very entertaining. We are very pleased to be able to join with the village for the Lyminge Festival; we are the Lyminge Dramatic Society after all!

In the autumn, from the 13th to the 16th November we are putting on The Pink Panther, directed by Trevor Gasson and starring the inimitable Inspector Clouseau! Put the date in your new diaries for an hilarious production.

6 County Councillor’s report Many of you will remember John Palmer who was my predecessor as your County Councillor. John served at KCC for 24 years including several years as Chairman of the Authority and was made an honorary alderman of KCC. He spends much of his retirement in Cyprus but I was delighted to see him at the County Council meeting on 13 December and he wanted to hear all the local news.

John chose a good meeting to attend as we debated our BREXIT preparedness paper which included some of the contingency plans for dealing with delays at the Channel ports of varying degrees of seriousness. I very much welcome this planning, as BREXIT or not, Kent suffers whenever there is disruption at the ports/tunnel when there are strikes, bad weather or operational problems affecting Eurotunnel, Dover port or Calais port. The contingency plans involve far better use of the M20 by keeping the bound lanes available for two way traffic and the coast bound lanes for queuing traffic. Manston airport will also be used as a holding area and a test by the Department for Transport in January showed that it is possible to release HGVs into normal traffic. This is good news for our part of Kent as it means that the traffic waiting for the ports can be more evenly divided between our M20 corridor and the A2/M2 corridor. John Palmer

The report also detailed the extra resources KCC had requested from the Government to help fund the BREXIT preparations including road strengthening in key areas, extra CCTV and staffing to manage traffic. I am very pleased to report that the Government has agreed to meet these costs.

Other good news is that KCC will receive some additional Government grants which help us balance our budget for 2019/20 without having to withdraw or drastically reduce our discretionary services. We will debate and set our budget for 2019/20 at our next full council meeting at an all day meeting on 14 February.

I attended the Elham Parish Council on 7 January and hope to be able to help with the replacement of some trees in the village near the highway that have died. Not every tree is suitable as some tree roots can undermine both the highways and pavement; Kent Highways also tries to use native trees where possible.

Geoff Clements, your parish council chairman joined me on 10 January for the first of a series of ‘Meet the Commissioner’ events that Matthew Scott. Kent’s Police and Crime Commissioner, is holding across the County. Issues ranged from rural crime to sentencing policy and Matthew talked about the preventative work he has been commissioning to reduce the number of people having a mental health crisis with nowhere to turn but the Police. Matthew is increasing the number of Police officers in Kent and he’s consulting on his plans for 2019/20 including the budget needed to take this increase to 400 extra officers. Please complete the online survey at www.kent-pcc.gov.uk/consultations or contact Matthew at Kent Police HQ, Sutton Road, , ME14 9BZ.

To finish with yet more good news, I was very cheered to take part in the Tryangle awards for the district on 11 January. Seven young people received trophies and certificates for achievement in a range of areas including sport, arts, courage and community action. Their stories were inspirational and I hope they will now do well in the countywide event. Susan Carey, Member Elham Valley, Kent County Council

On behalf of the RBL Poppy Appeal, I would like to thank everyone in the local area for their generosity towards this year’s Poppy Appeal. Although not all monies are yet in, the current total stands at £16,248.85 which is a wonderful result. I provide a breakdown of the totals within our local villages for your interest.

Elham £2368.45 – to include a retiring collection of £317.58 from the event held in the Village Hall on 11 November and the donations amounting to £187.50 from the WW1 trench open day Lyminge £2384.81 – to include a generous donation from Lyminge Parish Council Etchinghill £452.05 Hawkinge £8284.80 – to include a donation of £110.30 from a Halloween fireworks party, £178.30 from the Hawkinge Town Council Remembrance event on 10/11 November Rhodes Minnis £152.32 – to include a donation from Rhodes Minnis Parish Council £172.11

There have also been numerous other private donations and initiatives further afield across the area, all of which have generated additional income for the Poppy Appeal. There have been some wonderful local displays of public support for our national remembrance and I strongly believe that these have gone a long way towards increasing the total of the local Poppy Appeal and therefore I send thanks to everyone for your overwhelming support.

It never ceases to amaze me how generous everyone is and I thank you all sincerely, as your kind generosity will help to enable the RBL to continue its vital work in supporting our armed forces.

In the 1930s, in the uneasy interval between the twentieth century’s two great wars, there was a vogue in Britain for ‘pageants’. These were community enactments full of symbolism and allegory, in which members of the community were dressed as historical figures and placed against a scenic background to evoke the proud events of what a popular history book of the time called ‘Our Island Story’. At a time when radio and cinema were the only mass media, these sombre pageants were a means of providing community entertainment. They were also a way of providing solace, a community response to the anxieties of the interwar years, and above all to the terrible and still vivid memories of the Great War.

There was something of this pageant atmosphere about the events of Elham’s Armistice Centenary, exactly a hundred years after the end of the Great War. Although the Elham generations directly affected by the loss and sorrow had long since passed away, their village successors were concerned not only to ‘mark’ the centenary event, but also - a more subtle and difficult task - to come to terms with it. They succeeded admirably. The Great War remains a terrible psychic wound in the nation’s consciousness; and in the manner of their appraisal of the local consequences of the 1914-18 war, the organisers of the Elham Centenary events did indeed provide a kind of solace for our own anxious times.

The special Centenary events were designed to complement each other, and to fit in with the traditional patterns of Armistice commemorations. A documentary exhibition in the Methodist Hall enabled the people of the Elham Valley who gathered at the War Memorial on Armistice Sunday to familiarise themselves with the names of the dead recorded there. In the exhibition they could read and hear about the circumstances of the soldiers’ deaths and the telling details of their foreshortened lives. And on the Sunday afternoon, after the traditional church services, it was these details of individual lives which provided some of the most poignant moments in a Village Hall revue ‘The Landscape of Peace.’

There was a tacit parallel between the pageants of the 1930s and Elham’s 2018 commemorations. Both took place at a time of profound uncertainty about Britain’s future place in the world. More light-heartedly, one might even suggest there was a parallel between the characters and background of the 2018 organisers and the pageant committees of the past. For instance, among today’s co-ordinators there was an Historian, keeper of the village’s collective memory; a retired Schoolmaster, committed to the enlightenment of the young; a Playwright, versatile in amateur dramatics; an Engineer, who made complex technical things happen; a member of the Village Hall Entertainments Committee, who prepared the venue for the afternoon revue. All of these enthusiastic individuals would be recognised as kindred spirits by their counterparts of yesteryear.

Everyone will have particular memories of the weekend’s events. Here are some of mine:

The weekend weather, ‘the heavens weeping’, tear storms with sudden benedictions of yellow sunlight ...

Elham’s vicar reading ‘In Flanders Fields’ at early communion on Armistice Sunday ... later that morning ‘ a time out of time’, the seemingly endless two-minute silence at the war memorial ... a young horseman like a sentinel, dressed in khaki uniform and lowering his lance as wreaths were laid; when the bugle pierced the drawn-out silence, his startled horse was calmed by a bystander, who took hold of its bridle in a gesture as ancient as horsemanship itself ...

A visitor to the Methodist Hall muttering a heartbroken ‘No!’ as the exhibition’s video presentation listed the four dead sons of the Ellenders of Ottinge ... a child’s drawing of a traction engine, kept by a grieving mother in memory of her son ... the elegant aesthetic of a bronze medallion on display in the exhibition, which had been presented to the family of a dead soldier … Britannia with her Lion, in a mix of Arts and Crafts and Art Deco ...

The hush among the Village Hall audience when one of the revue performers sang ‘The Honey-suckle and the Bee’, evoking the moment when an actress touring the Western Front sang to a soldier as he died … the shock of realising that, a hundred years ago, the house in Lime Villas that one passes every day had the blinds drawn down in mourning … the remarkable relevance of the 1960s song ‘Where have all the Flowers Gone?’ in a revue commemorating the dead of the Great War ...

‘The Landscape of Peace’ was an exercise in allegory, and the overall tone of the Village Hall revue was pitch-perfect. It would have been easy to take a false step, to lurch into jingoism or veer towards mawkishness, but the cast’s (and of course the director’s) dramatic judgment was precise. The range of generations represented on stage - from those with personal memories of the people who lived through the Great War to the schoolchildren of today - was symbolic, so that every anecdote about the Great War’s consequences for the people of Elham carried a resonance far beyond the lovely confines of the Elham Valley.

11 CHURCH MATTERS

Dear Friends January over already so quickly it seems, with its dull skies and dark mornings. I am looking forward to brighter and, once again, celebration times as I prepare for weddings, the renewal of them and the blessing of them later on in the year.

We have quite a number this year, in our eight beautiful churches in the Elham Valley, which is wonderful and exciting. They are such amazing historical buildings, each with their own colourful history. All of the churches are very individual and unique in their own right. Come and visit us - we offer you a warm welcome.

The ‘Church Measures’ which allow people to marry in these beautiful churches have been very much relaxed, and perhaps you might like to consider one of these historic settings for your wedding. The Canterbury Diocese has invested in the ‘Wedding Project’, which is a project to enable the Church of to be more welcoming to people who approach us for weddings. Our eight churches here have become very much a part of this project.

The Archbishop of York, The Most Rev’d John Sentamu, has been involved with this project and he posed the question, ‘Whose Church is it?’ It is God’s Church and not ours and we all need to remember that! We are all guests in Christ’s Church. So, we invite you to all to come along and be guests with us.

The Bishop of Jarrow, Mark Bryant says we as a church are ‘scary stuff’ and we as Christians need to welcome people with the welcome of God. Our three churches would like to offer you all that welcome.

As we move to brighter and longer days, our eight churches become warmer inside so please do come and visit us, consider us for your wedding and you will find that we are not so scary after all. You are a Guest and we offer you a warm welcome and great hospitality.
