S Update on inging Your Way To Good Health In Lyminge

Thank you, Lyminge Association! Singing for Health has started at Age UK!

You may have read the article in the January issue of this newsletter, in which I said that we could start Singing for Health at Age UK if we could match the donations we have. The Lyminge Association has offered the £90 to start the sessions and allow us to run until Easter. THANK YOU! Since then I have received anonymous generous offers to allow us to continue well into the summer. There has also been a very generous donation by the Lions of £150 so the sessions will continue further. Generally we will meet at 11am on the last Friday of the month and all are welcome. Now my aim is to secure funding of £600 annually on a more permanent basis. Thank you all for your offers of advice and donations. Gillian Heywood MBE Tel: 863232 Email:[email protected]

The Christmas Day Lunch Club’s 2nd year saw numbers swell from 18 to nearly 40 people. The hall was decked out in true Christmas style, thanks to some very successful fundraising and the atmosphere was truly festive with a magnificent Christmas feast thanks to the combined efforts of many brilliant volunteers. The day included such touches as a very sweet little elf delivering small gifts to the guests, to live entertainment and of course the Queens Speech, all adding that special something to the overall enjoyment. To round things off each guest left for home complete with a packed festive supper to enjoy whilst recounting the events of the day. The day was a huge success in bringing people together

“Thank you so much, I have had a wonderful day”, “This has been one of the best Christmas’s I’ve ever had”, “You and all your helpers must have worked so hard. It feels like I’m spending it with a big family” and “I don’t know what I would have done without you. Thank you”.

So a big ‘thank you’ to all those businesses, individuals and volunteers who have made the Christmas Day Lunch Club possible. We hope for your continued support in 2013 at the novel fundraising events we are planning and would ask that you would consider supporting all those local businesses that have supported us.

Yes, THANK YOU!! indeed to everybody. A full report, photos of Christmas 2012 and the list of supporters can be found at www.christmasdaylunchclub.co.uk Editor: [email protected] 3 01303863737

John passed away on his birthday in December. He had fought cancer for over a year and sad to say lost the battle. John, who was self‐employed, was known throughout the area for his advert in the Lyminge Newsletter: HONEST JOHN NEWING, DIY HANDYMAN, GARDENING, PAT TESTING AND MORE. RELIABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY, NO JOB TOO SMALL. He wrote his own epitaph. John was also always there, quietly working in the background providing help for the local community. He would find time to talk to people as well as help, quietly and efficiently, with jobs around the house or garden. Maybe the Christmas tree battery boxes he built in brick will be his lasting local memorial. From all his friends and neighbours. John you will be missed. Editor: [email protected] 4

Lyminge Weather Statistics – December 2012 With thanks to Mr D. Godden for these weather statistics and notes.

Total Monthly Temperature (oC) Air Pressure (hPa) Wind Speed (mph) Rainfall 14.9 1013 41 SE 238.5 mm Maximum (21/12/12) (8-11/12/12) (14/12/12) (9.37 inches) -7.0 983 Highest Daily 28 mm (1.10 inches) Minimum (21/12/12) (14-17/12/12) Rainfall 19/12/12

About average monthly rainfall since 2000. A mild end to the year, on 31st December 2012 I had crocus, hellebores and snowdrops in bloom. Primroses, polyanthus, auriculas and cowslips were also flowering. There were berries on my strawberries and daffodils and tulips were several inches high.

Lyminge Heritage Questions and Answers

Here are some of Mr David Godden’s recollections of the 1987 'Hurricane'. “There were two trees brought down, one across Rectory Lane, the other across Mayfield Road by Well Cottages. This brought out the 'Blitz' spirit with those living there. With the help of saws we, collectively, first of all moved the smaller tree across Mayfield Road. The tree in Rectory Lane was more difficult as it had brought several power lines down with it. The most difficult was concerning the bungalow on the corner of Rectory Lane/Mayfield Road as this was draped with live power lines. We had to ensure the elderly occupant stayed in until these were cleared. Never the lees Rectory Lane was open by about 11.00 am. With only about five to six houses in the area with power, those with it were kept busy cooking/providing hot water/making tea etc. The whole area was littered with pieces of broken glass/slates & tiles. What a blessing it occurred at night which avoided injuries from this source. My own garage roof had about a dozen slates sticking out of it. … I told my Insurers [about this and] suggested I seal all the cuts caused by the slates. They authorised me to 'get on with it and send in my bill'. When they settled up they paid me [personally] for carrying out the work. This is different to what we usually hear about Insurers.” Mr Godden kindly provides the newsletter with the weather statistics each month. His records stretch back to before the ‘Hurricane’ and he continues his email to me, “Over the night of 15th ‐16th October 1987 the barometric pressure dropped very quickly from 1002mb to 982mb. The wind was from the southwest; with the strongest gust in Lyminge recorded as 71mph. Daytime temperatures were 17.9oC on 15th October, with 18.2oC on 16th October. The overnight temperature was 8.9oC. There was no rainfall.” Although the wind speed is not as fast as some recorded that night it was still quite remarkable and enough to produce the damage recorded. It must be remembered that this is the record of one particular place and other places might have recorded faster speeds if they had been monitored. Also remarkable is the sudden drop in air pressure. This would have been felt as the fast wind speeds. Do you have any recollections of the ‘Hurricane’? If you do, wish to provide any information about the locality’s heritage or have a question, that readers maybe able to answer, then please contact me, Alistair Bailey (email: [email protected], telephone: 864235)

The Christmas Day Lunch Club filled the Village Hall on Christmas Day with a wonderful festive atmosphere. This was enjoyed by nearly forty people this year. For a full report see page 3. What a wonderful idea the whole event is - yet another special event in our great village. Well done to everyone involved ! ➧

➧ All set for Christmas Dinner at the Village Hall with the Christmas Day Lunch Club 2012 Friday 28th December saw the long awaited Petanque Christmas Challenge 2012. This

was between the residents of St Mary’s Drive ➧ and St Mary’s Close, Etchinghill. The Drive won the first leg 13 -6, but the Close, as holders of the Trophy, came storming back to win the second leg 13 -7. The third and deciding leg was finally won by the Drive 18 - 8 to give them the Trophy for this year. A rematch will take place in December 2013 !

Some of those taking part are pictured here in the necessary all-weather gear !

Last month’s picture was the mirror, and the view seen in it, opposite the entrance to the telephone exchange in Canterbury Road How about this one ?
