Some Problems of the North Downs Trackway in Kent
http://kentarchaeology.org.uk/research/archaeologia-cantiana/ Kent Archaeological Society is a registered charity number 223382 © 2017 Kent Archaeological Society SOME PROBLEMS OF THE NORTH DOWNS TRACKWAY IN KENT By REV. H. W. R. Liman, S.J., M.A.(0xon.) THE importance of this pre-historic route from the Continent to the ancient habitat of man in Wiltshire has long been recognized. In the Surrey Archceological Collections of 1964 will be found an attempted re-appraisal of its route through the county of Surrey. Although the problems connected with its passage through Kent are fewer owing to its being better preserved, there are some points which I think still deserve attention—the three river crossings of the Darenth, the Medway and the Stour; the crossing of the Elham valley; and the passage to Canterbury of the branch route from Eastwell Park, known as the Pilgrims' Way. It may be worth while, before dealing with the actual crossings, to note a few general characteristics. Mr. I. D. Margary—our most eminent authority on ancient roads in Britain—has pointed out the dual nature of this trackway. It com- prises a Ridgeway and a Terraceway. The first runs along the crest of the escarpment. The second runs parallel to it, usually at the point below the escarpment where the slope flattens out into cultivation. In Kent for the most part the Terraceway has survived more effectually than the Ridgeway. It is for much of its length used as a modern road, marked by the familiar sign 'Pilgrims' Way'. Except at its eastern terminus the Ridgeway has not been so lucky, although it can be traced fairly accurately by those who take the trouble to do so. -

12. Lancashire Hotpot: Walsden & Todmorden
12. Lancashire HotPot: Walsden & Todmorden Duration: 1½ Hours Walsden Cricket Club and Todmorden Cricket Club are located just inside the western boundary of Calderdale, but both play in Lancashirebased competitions: WCC in the Central Lancashire League and TCC in the Lancashire League. This walk takes you from ground to ground – from Scott Street to Centre Vale – and takes in much more besides. Leave your vehicle in Riggs Garden Centre car park, Rochdale Road, Walsden. Have a look round the giant store and then cross over the main road to visit the gift shop and café. Watch some play at Walsden cricket ground, just a few hundred yards up the road in the direction of Walsden itself. The history of WCC is dominated by Frank Scott – hence Scott Street (the name of the ground) and Scott House (one of the nearby blocks of flats). When you leave the ground rejoin the main road, go over the railway bridge, but locate the short private road to the right of the last house on the opposite side of the road. Go down the path, ensure you close the gate at the end; go right and then drop down left onto the towpath of the Rochdale Canal. Head towards the church spire you see in the distance – in the direction of the centre of Walsden. The WCC logo Sauntering down the towpath, you will encounter joggers, walkers and fishing enthusiasts (look out for the Todmorden Angling Society plaque on your left). If you’re thirsty or hungry, you’ll be glad to know that the Cross Keys pub will soon appear on your left – feel free to pop in for a drink or a bite to eat! You’ll also spot a small stream on your left that starts to run parallel to the canal. -

POINT-TO-POINT AUTHORITY ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17 PPA Annual Report 2016/17
POINT-TO-POINT AUTHORITY ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17 PPA Annual Report 2016/17 Chairman’s Introduction The weather plays such a significant role in the sport of point to pointing and I am happy to say that the weather was kind to us for the 2016-2017 season and allowed pretty much uninterrupted racing from November to June. The racing was in the main of high quality and competitive, producing some worthy champions both equine and human. British point to pointing has a long tradition of producing top class jockeys and trainers for the professional game, and the 2016-17 season may go down as a vintage year producing James Bowen and Bryony Frost amongst others. Our two senior Champion Jockeys, Will Biddick and Gina Andrews both retained their titles and are good ambassadors. On the equine front the season pleasingly saw a significant uplift in the number of 4yo runners and winners in keeping with the BHA’s wish to see young British point to pointers graduate into the professional ranks. 36 4yo winners v 24 winners in 15/16, so a 50% increase. The seeds for this were sown some 3 years ago and it is a ‘long game’ breeding NH horses so this big step up should be rewarded with further funding from the newly formed Racing Authority who handle the distribution of The Levy. It is vital that point to pointing is properly funded and supported to ensure that it remains the nursery for professional jumps racing and also a place for older and lesser grade horses to have a purpose and job.
