12. Lancashire Hotpot: Walsden & Todmorden
12. Lancashire HotPot: Walsden & Todmorden Duration: 1½ Hours Walsden Cricket Club and Todmorden Cricket Club are located just inside the western boundary of Calderdale, but both play in Lancashirebased competitions: WCC in the Central Lancashire League and TCC in the Lancashire League. This walk takes you from ground to ground – from Scott Street to Centre Vale – and takes in much more besides. Leave your vehicle in Riggs Garden Centre car park, Rochdale Road, Walsden. Have a look round the giant store and then cross over the main road to visit the gift shop and café. Watch some play at Walsden cricket ground, just a few hundred yards up the road in the direction of Walsden itself. The history of WCC is dominated by Frank Scott – hence Scott Street (the name of the ground) and Scott House (one of the nearby blocks of flats). When you leave the ground rejoin the main road, go over the railway bridge, but locate the short private road to the right of the last house on the opposite side of the road. Go down the path, ensure you close the gate at the end; go right and then drop down left onto the towpath of the Rochdale Canal. Head towards the church spire you see in the distance – in the direction of the centre of Walsden. The WCC logo Sauntering down the towpath, you will encounter joggers, walkers and fishing enthusiasts (look out for the Todmorden Angling Society plaque on your left). If you’re thirsty or hungry, you’ll be glad to know that the Cross Keys pub will soon appear on your left – feel free to pop in for a drink or a bite to eat! You’ll also spot a small stream on your left that starts to run parallel to the canal. -
Calderdale Way Walking Route
Calderdale Way, walk route – dramatic West Yorkshire The Calderdale Way is a 50 mile (80 km) walk exploring the hills, moors and valleys of Calderdale. It is an ‘up and down’ journey with few level sections. The higher levels, however, provide some exceptionally fine panoramic views. There are some steep sections and there will be muddy parts following wet weather. Some areas of moorland are exposed. Mileage details, which are approximate, are given for longer sections with intermediate distances. The best walking and views as with all walks, would be in sunny weather following a dry spell. Appropriate footwear and clothing is needed for every part. The walk is accessible by public transport. Additionally it can be split into short walks also by using public transport. Additionally, there are many link paths. For example, an easy walk would be the three mile Norland to Ripponden section. Take the bus from Halifax to Norland and then walk on the level and downhill to Ripponden with another bus back to Halifax. Another even shorter walk combined with sight-seeing, would be to take the train to Hebden Bridge, bus to Heptonstall, and walk ¾ mile down to Hardcastle Crag and bus back to Hebden Bridge. The whole walk is circular and so can be started at any point; this starts at Brighouse. There are bus services to each of the distance points. Train services are available at Brighouse, Todmorden, Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Sowerby Bridge and Halifax. Route map and accommodation links at end of these details. Brighouse, Southowram, West Vale, Norland, Ripponden, Mill Bank (11.5 miles; start satnav HD6 1PQ) This section is a relatively easy introduction to the walk. -

The Lions Tale December 2019 Tony Mott Susan Cash Various From The Chair Race Reports Contributors A bit of rambling from our chair A detailed summary of race Championship, Fell Race & with a lowdown of what has reports from November. As WYWL updates. Kevin happened so far this year. always, plenty of people in Robinson’s Blog – Hardwolds . action all around the UK. 80. 1 The Lions Tale December 2019 From the Chair Tony Mott Hello Lions, Another action-packed month has come and gone. Have a read through Sue Cash’s awesome race reports to see what your fellow Lions have been up to in November. The XC season kicked off at Baildon. One of my favourite courses and I wanted to run it but Tracy and I were in mid-Wales the day before for a mountain bike race – the Real Ale Wobble – and there was no way my legs or hangover were going to have recovered quickly enough for me to get back up north in time. The last track race of the year took place down at Spring Hall. A massive thank you to Mark, Tanya and Graham for leading our weekly track sessions and track races through the year. If anyone hasn’t tried a track session, don’t be intimidated. You can take it as easy or as hard as you like and you will get great support from the coaches and your fellow runners. It’s just like a normal run but without the risk of getting lost, which is why Clayton likes it so much. -
