12. Lancashire Hotpot: Walsden & Todmorden
12. Lancashire HotPot: Walsden & Todmorden Duration: 1½ Hours Walsden Cricket Club and Todmorden Cricket Club are located just inside the western boundary of Calderdale, but both play in Lancashirebased competitions: WCC in the Central Lancashire League and TCC in the Lancashire League. This walk takes you from ground to ground – from Scott Street to Centre Vale – and takes in much more besides. Leave your vehicle in Riggs Garden Centre car park, Rochdale Road, Walsden. Have a look round the giant store and then cross over the main road to visit the gift shop and café. Watch some play at Walsden cricket ground, just a few hundred yards up the road in the direction of Walsden itself. The history of WCC is dominated by Frank Scott – hence Scott Street (the name of the ground) and Scott House (one of the nearby blocks of flats). When you leave the ground rejoin the main road, go over the railway bridge, but locate the short private road to the right of the last house on the opposite side of the road. Go down the path, ensure you close the gate at the end; go right and then drop down left onto the towpath of the Rochdale Canal. Head towards the church spire you see in the distance – in the direction of the centre of Walsden. The WCC logo Sauntering down the towpath, you will encounter joggers, walkers and fishing enthusiasts (look out for the Todmorden Angling Society plaque on your left). If you’re thirsty or hungry, you’ll be glad to know that the Cross Keys pub will soon appear on your left – feel free to pop in for a drink or a bite to eat! You’ll also spot a small stream on your left that starts to run parallel to the canal. -
POINT-TO-POINT AUTHORITY ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17 PPA Annual Report 2016/17
POINT-TO-POINT AUTHORITY ANNUAL REPORT 2016/17 PPA Annual Report 2016/17 Chairman’s Introduction The weather plays such a significant role in the sport of point to pointing and I am happy to say that the weather was kind to us for the 2016-2017 season and allowed pretty much uninterrupted racing from November to June. The racing was in the main of high quality and competitive, producing some worthy champions both equine and human. British point to pointing has a long tradition of producing top class jockeys and trainers for the professional game, and the 2016-17 season may go down as a vintage year producing James Bowen and Bryony Frost amongst others. Our two senior Champion Jockeys, Will Biddick and Gina Andrews both retained their titles and are good ambassadors. On the equine front the season pleasingly saw a significant uplift in the number of 4yo runners and winners in keeping with the BHA’s wish to see young British point to pointers graduate into the professional ranks. 36 4yo winners v 24 winners in 15/16, so a 50% increase. The seeds for this were sown some 3 years ago and it is a ‘long game’ breeding NH horses so this big step up should be rewarded with further funding from the newly formed Racing Authority who handle the distribution of The Levy. It is vital that point to pointing is properly funded and supported to ensure that it remains the nursery for professional jumps racing and also a place for older and lesser grade horses to have a purpose and job. -

The Lions Tale December 2019 Tony Mott Susan Cash Various From The Chair Race Reports Contributors A bit of rambling from our chair A detailed summary of race Championship, Fell Race & with a lowdown of what has reports from November. As WYWL updates. Kevin happened so far this year. always, plenty of people in Robinson’s Blog – Hardwolds . action all around the UK. 80. 1 The Lions Tale December 2019 From the Chair Tony Mott Hello Lions, Another action-packed month has come and gone. Have a read through Sue Cash’s awesome race reports to see what your fellow Lions have been up to in November. The XC season kicked off at Baildon. One of my favourite courses and I wanted to run it but Tracy and I were in mid-Wales the day before for a mountain bike race – the Real Ale Wobble – and there was no way my legs or hangover were going to have recovered quickly enough for me to get back up north in time. The last track race of the year took place down at Spring Hall. A massive thank you to Mark, Tanya and Graham for leading our weekly track sessions and track races through the year. If anyone hasn’t tried a track session, don’t be intimidated. You can take it as easy or as hard as you like and you will get great support from the coaches and your fellow runners. It’s just like a normal run but without the risk of getting lost, which is why Clayton likes it so much. -

The Lions Tale February 2020 Tim Walker Susan Cash Various From The Chair Race Reports Contributors A bit of rambling from our new A detailed summary of race Championship & Fell Race Chair, with a lowdown of what reports from January. As updates. WYWL. PB Corner. has happened so far this year. always, plenty of people in Our new ‘Meet the Member’ action all around the UK. interview; and marathon training bloggers. 1 The Lions Tale February 2020 From the Chair Tim Walker Well here we go, my first Chairman’s piece for the Newsletter and already I’m late with my submission and have delayed the January issue – I’m sure you will all know the reason why by now! What a fantastic month we’ve had for running, with some great races, which Sue has brilliantly documented in her press reports. One of the highlights for me was when we kicked off the 2020 Club Championship with the Winter Handicap, which reminded everyone of the Clubs origins. Arriving at the 1885 to find the pub closed so some cover was hastily gathered and we sat Joanne under an umbrella in the pouring rain to do race registration. Colin coming up with a suitable route, John Bassinder then telling Colin that 8½ miles, mainly uphill, was not really suitable. Colin amending his route and then none of the Club actually following Colin’s route anyway – we just followed James Penson who took a short-cut!! It was all good fun and everyone had a good laugh about it afterwards. After the Handicap came the Hebden which is one of my favorite races of the year, it’s an early start from Mytholmroyd for a brilliant 15 or 22 mile trot round some of the best that Calderdale has to offer. -
