T H E R O L E The Chief Financial Officer is responsible to oversee and be accountable for the current and long-term effectiveness of the School’s operations functions, including Finance and Facilities. This position ensures the financial health of the School and is accountable for the overall integrity and protection of its financial records. The CFO reports to the Head of School, is a member of the School’s Leadership Team and provides direction and guidance to the Head of School, the Finance Committee of the Board and the Financial Aid Committee, ensuring decisions made are based on sound financial information. Founded in 1962 as a nursery school and day camp, today Bayview Glen thrives on two closely- connected campuses in the heart of Toronto with full school enrolment, one of the largest camp programs, robust athletics and arts, an active parent association and successful guild shop. As the School has grown over the years, so, too, has its needs and within this context, the new CFO will want to focus on the following near-term priorities: See the build of the new athletic complex and lower school modifications through to a successful completion over the next 18 months; Implement new systems and harness the benefit of process modernization; Be ahead of the curve with emerging and innovative developments in education and plan strategically and practically for what is coming; Inspire, coach and mentor the team for high performance; Partner closely with Advancement to support the financial, accounting and investment aspects of fundraising as the School continues to foster its culture of philanthropy; Assist in the development of a new strategic plan as a key member of the Leadership Team; Work closely with the Head of School to manage risk effectively; Immerse oneself in the culture and life of the school as an active and participative leader with administration, the Board, staff, donors, neighbours, parents and students. IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate brings the following experience, skills, attributes and competencies: An undergraduate degree and/or MBA in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance or a related field along with a CPA designation; Progressively responsible experience in accounting, audit procedures and financial operations; Demonstrated impact in not-for-profit or business organization(s) in a senior leadership position; Extensive knowledge of: o Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), consolidation theory and practice, modern controllership, financial and accounting theories and practices, in order to set the financial framework and oversee the financial operations of the School, to provide specialized financial expertise, advice and leadership, and to set accounting standards and ensure compliance; o Financial policy/procedures and systems design/development principles and methods to develop and implement a range of financial and business processing/operational policies/procedures and corporate systems to meet audit and other requirements; o Financial reporting processes and requirements to lead the year-end financial analysis and financial consolidation process for School reporting; o Systems design and development principles to lead the design, development and implementation of financial reporting systems, and the use, operations and capabilities of large scale computer systems for financial reporting; o Business planning budget development and performance measurement principles, processes and best practices to provide consultative advice to senior management; o Strategic plans and directions, capital planning, campaign projections and operations; o All relevant legislation and regulations to ensure compliance. Solid analytical, organizational, planning and problem-solving capabilities with an excellent attention to detail; Ability to present complex financial information and requirements to various audiences and present convincing recommendations for effective and appropriate financial management; Ability to build trust and strong working relationships across the School, including with the Finance Committee and Board of Directors, to provide advice, expertise and persuasive recommendations; Professional, approachable, and collaborative approach to work; Capacity to think both strategically and tactically; Ability to inspire and mentor staff and delegate appropriately, fostering staff accountability and responsibility; Excellent communication skills; Operates with a high degree of integrity, reliability and responsibility. APPENDIX A: MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES The CFO ensures the sound financial management of Bayview Glen School. This position will lead and manage the full scope of financial operations, including accounting functions, financial reporting and analysis, financial controls and financial management advice. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Operations Accountability: Oversees and ensures the development, implementation and reporting of the operating and facilities master planning budget to the Head of School, the Board of Directors and Finance Committee, auditors, lenders, donors and other areas as required; Ensures consistent application of policies, procedures, protocols, internal controls and best practices for operations functions to reflect the School’s vision, values, professional standards and to safeguard assets, protect confidential information and ensure accurate financial reporting; Builds and maintains the School’s short and long term strategic financial models and dashboards; Manages and monitors all financial transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll/benefits, and oversees reconciliations; Reviews and approves purchases and invoices, in accordance with budgets, financial authorities and contractual agreements; Reviews and monitors all cash transactions, ensuring compliance
