Getting Outside

Things to do in the Garden in July The garden may begin to straggle after all the rain and weeds pop up from nowhere. Flowers have browned or drooped and some rejuvenation is needed! Deadhead all spent flowers and weed and hoe beds Plant some colourful new plants in the gaps and so much the better if they are bee friendly. Mulch around your plants with bark or compost or grass cuttings Tidy and tie in climbing shrubs Sow more greens and salads Feed and water tomato plants, nip out side shoots Mow and edge the lawn. Leave some grass uncut for insects and wildlife Perfect. Bring out the garden chairs and the sun! Gill Shipsides

PARISH WALK Saturday 20th July. Meet Burden Car park 11am. Route: Mineshop - Coxsford - Tresmorn - Cleave - St.Gennys church - Congdons - Lovers Lane. Stout walking boots essential; something to drink advisable. Phone Gill Nicholls 230393

Community Transport

Times are looking up for people living in a rural area without a car. With the closing of villages shops and the increasing cost of keeping a car on the road it has become increasingly difficult to be independent. Elderly folk, or those who choose not to drive, or use online shopping, can currently benefit from the Jubilee Club and Age Concern Bus Outings, as well as the very successful support service offered by Richard Leach and his team of volunteers. There is a now a new Ring and Ride scheme from Holsworthy that is considering expanding their service to include Crackington. Currently they pick up from , and Whitstone and if there was a need, would include our parish. A service where you book your place beforehand, are picked up from and delivered back to your door and shopping carried for you by the driver. This enables otherwise housebound, dependant people, to enjoy a trip out, with other people, in transport that is convenient, accessible, affordable and door to door. It would help the organisers with their decision making if those interested in such a scheme in St Gennys contacted Holsworthy Rural Transport office and expressed their interest. Call 01409 259001 Or email: [email protected] See their website for more information pickme-up.co.uk

This information is shared with you, taken from their promotional literature Heather (Ed)

Recycling

A message from Rob Nolan, forwarded by Nicky Chopak our District Councillor…...

Lots of people have watched the TV program on plastics, and are worried about where our recycling goes!

None of our recycling ends up in Landfill, either here or abroad.

Because you separate the plastics out at kerbside, and at the recycling centre we run it along conveyor belts and sort it further, we end up with a valuable product, that’s sold and turned into plastic pellets and sold on to plastic manufacturers.

Mixed glass makes brown glass, so beer or wine bottles. Ours goes to Scunthorpe and comes back as Stella or Grolsh.

There’s been a big drop in the amount of newspaper coming to the recycling centres, but a massive increase in the amount of cardboard. That seems to be Amazon, etc, and their packaging.

We’re negotiating a new Waste Contract, and from 2020 will be recycling more, including food waste.

Rob Nolan,

Cornwall Councillor and Portfolio Holder for Environment

Meanwhile you can find out where your recycling goes, who manages it, and what it becomes, by going to— www..gov.uk/recycling

Thank you to Annabel Yates and Janey Comber for asking the questions. and sharing the answers on FB Crackington Appreciation page. Anyone wanting to visit the recycling centre, email Annabel ; [email protected]

Friends and neighbours

Last month members of our community worked together proving to one and all that we are united in what we want and need. On two occasions they provided help by way of the defibrillator and also providing transport to hospital for relatives. It is reassuring to know that we live in such a lovely community willing to assist others. I am sure there are many occasions concerning various people where help is offered, needed and accepted. Our thanks to all of our unsung heroes. It is now obvious that the defibrillators are an important asset to the village. For those of you who may not know the positioning of the three defibrillators they are as follows :- The front of the Institute, the front of the Legion Hall and The Coombe Barton, to the right of the main entrance on the outside wall of the Function Room Richard Leach

A huge thanks to everyone involved raising funds (you know who you are!) for the Third Defibrillator in the Parish at The Coombe Barton, but especially for Glyn and Dejana for organising it, siting it, and offering to maintain it! Another training day on how to use the equipment has been requested by various people in the parish, and Barry Jordan, the Parish Clerk will arrange, likely to be in September, although its doubtful whether Paul Anderson will need to be on it, he’s used it already, more than once! Neetside Repair Café

Since first reading about the Café in March’s Gazette, as a Trustee of Neetside Centre, it was very interesting to go along and see for myself how the project is progressing. Neetside Community Centre has been providing space for a range of services and professionals for and the surrounding parishes, Including St Gennys, since 1996. In just 5 months since its opening in Bude, the Repair cafe has quickly gained popularity, and is now seeing queues of people waiting for their broken items to be assessed and verdicts given. Eilidh, Deb and Tilly have developed the Repair Café at Neetside Community Centre, part of an International initiative to reduce waste, share skills and bring people together. Already they have seen 54 items repaired and not thrown away. In some cases advice has been given to the owner on how to repair the item themselves. Eilidh is keen to encourage parents to get younger people involved, to learn how to mend a puncture, repair a zip, or fix a broken toaster. Working with Greener Bude and Friends of The Earth, Neetside Community Centre is closely linked with the adjacent Community Orchard and Biodiversity trail and The Bude Refill shop. This new venture run by a team of volunteers enables you to shop plastic free, bringing your own container, just buy what you need and save money and waste. Not forgetting the Café, which supplies hot drinks and a range of cakes while you wait, all for a donation. A snapshot of things brought for repair include Lamp, Iron, Radio, Bike, Mobile phone, Handbag, Hoodie, Shoe, Zips….. This is all very exciting getting people together, learning new skills, saving money and helping the environment, especially, when faces from our village are seen in the queue. The Repair Café is open on the last Saturday of every month 10.30 –12.30pm, Neetside Community Centre, Leven Road, Bude EX238LB see their FB page. Heather (Ed) Miranda Clarke

St Gennys Silver band

Still going strong after all these years, with renewed enthusiasm with our new musical director Colin Gay. Colin, already leading a very successful Bude Metric Band and helping out at Holsworthy and Launceston, brings his own style of leadership and

Ashley Denford John Nex’s Retiring Concert a wealth of musical knowledge and expertise. We are very fortunate to have him! A few of the players can usually be found down the pub after band practise! John Nex who has led us for over 4 years has stepped backwards...into the row behind the Euphonium and Baritones to play 1st Trombone, and Linda Wilde and Colin’s partner, Marie have also joined the band, making a total of 19 players (when everyone is there). We play at Hallworthy Market twice a year to mark Rogation and Harvest Festival. Always a good turnout with lusty singing and great atmosphere. A tradition that has been in place for many years. With concerts in the Parish, Fetes, Beach events, various Christmas engagements, its quite a commitment, but rewarding and fun! Anyone who would like to join us, or just have a go would be made very welcome. We have instruments to lend and expertise to share. Just give Linda Lewis a call 07414 609043 Our next appearance will be at The Horticultural Show on Friday 26th July. Heather Smith (2nd trombone)

These are pictures taken by Vic Hall, that didn't get chosen for the 2020 St Gennys Calendar. It was a very difficult task, choosing ones to match the months, to meet the printers criteria and to be fair to all those people who submitted photographs. I hope you will be satisfied with the result. The Calendar should be printed ready for sale by the end of July. Ready for the summer visitors, as well as all those Christmas presents! Ed.
