Dr. Louise Newman, who first introduced me to the study of gender, taught me to find and appreciate the contributions in each piece of scholarship before searching for its shortcomings. Her sincere openness toward different approaches and ideas has encouraged me to remain curious about the work and methodology of different scholars. I have learned more because of this. Dr. Jeffrey Adler, a careful and conscientious scholar, who has given freely of his time and expertise to help me create a more polished work of history. His interest in culture and violence has fostered in me an abiding curiosity about the unwritten but understood codes of classed cultures in America. Dr. Ben Wise, a recent addition to my committee, encouraged me in a critical juncture in my writing process and his positive comments and suggestions have propelled me forward. Finally, Dr. Sevan Terzian, who agreed to join my committee in a glitch, has provided me with reading suggestions, which have helped me to better understand the time period under study. By their scholarly insights and professionalism, Dr. Link, Dr. Newman, Dr. Adler, Dr. Wise, and Dr. Terzian have taught me more than I could ever repay or acknowledge. My graduate cohort at the University of Florida is serious, interested, honest, and kind. It was the perfect culture in which to write a dissertation. Because of the Milbauer 4 Seminar organized by Dr. William Link, my project benefitted from the thoughtful comments and suggestions of my fellow graduate students for three consecutive years. I have also received travel grants from the History Department at the University of Florida, the Richard J. Milbauer Fund, and the Women‘s Studies Department, which have enabled me to travel to Alabama numerous times over the course of this project. In Birmingham, many people donated their time to my project in order to help me better understand their city and its people. Archivists Jim Baggett and Laura Anderson of the Birmingham Public Library Archives and the Civil Rights Institute were always ready with answers and ideas. Dr. Robert Corley, Reverend Lawton Higgs, Reverend Kevin Higgs, Doug Carpenter, Liz Reed, and Sheila and Ira Chaffin each forfeited time from their busy schedules to answer my questions and offer their experiences and knowledge to my project. I am grateful for their generosity. In the case of the Reverends Higgs who run the Church of the Reconciler, a ministry that caters to Birmingham‘s impoverished men, women and children, I am not only grateful for their shared understanding of the way that Birmingham ―works‖ but also humbled by their mission and devotion to those in need. The love and patience of my family members have supported and sustained me through the writing of my dissertation. I am the first family member to attempt to earn a doctorate and the longevity of the process has been something for which we were all ill- prepared. Still, they remained confident that I could accomplish what I set out to do and their confidence has, in turn, made it so. It was my mother, Georgia Kim Richarde Bryson, who first spoke seriously to me about history and her wisdom has warned me away from being overly critical of times and people gone by, although I still have far to 5 go. My mother raised my sister, my brother, and I on stories of her old Florida family members who were wild and vengeful, as well as literary and proud. In her accounts, my grandfather‘s family all seem to move through their lives with a sense of history somehow, and I get the same sense about my mother. My father, Dennis James Bryson, has been a constant role model to me and my memories of how hard he worked as I grew up have kept me grounded. On late nights with my books and in early mornings with my laptop, I remain cognizant of the fact that most everyone else in the world is working hard, too. This is because of my father. My sister, Bridget, and my brother, Henry, have also supported me in the writing of my dissertation by their love, humor, and their unflagging optimism about all things Heather. They are my very best friends. I would also like to acknowledge my grandparents: Henry Osceola Richarde, Mary Elizabeth Walker Richarde, Mary Caroline Sessi Bryson, and James John Bryson for their goodness, love, and faith in education. Finally, I would like to thank my son and my daughter. Although they know little about the civil rights movement and less about Birmingham, Alabama, this project has directed their lives in important ways. It is the worst of times because the library’s budget has been slashed for Fiscal Year 2011 and there is no relief in sight. The library’s acquisitions budget Twas cut 48 percent. The City of Birmingham’s Volunteer Retirement Incentive Plan (VRIP) netted a loss to the library of 25 positions (from a total of 170 full time positions) held by long time experienced library staff. The Mayor’s Office has at this time given us permission to fill only twelve of these positions. The loss of these 25 employees is greatest in the area of leadership. For many years the Birmingham Public Library (BPL) has depended on a leadership team made up of ten coordinators who oversee a function of the library or a geographical area of branches and public service. Six of the retirees were coordinators and the City will allow us to fill only one, the Information Technology Coordinator. In addition we will not be allowed to fill the second Associate Director position. The loss to our leadership team is almost fifty per cent. From a team of thirteen we will be a team of seven. Cuts to the budget of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative threaten BPL because the Cooperative provides the backbone of our day to day operations – our online library catalog, Internet access, and much more. These are the best of times for the Birmingham Public Library because we have the finest staff and board remaining who have the intelligence, creativity, and determination to rise to the many challenges of this crisis and continue the excellent service that is BPL’s tradition.

    Vann, David Johnson Papers, 1959-1979 Biography/Background: David Johnson Vann was born August 10, 1928 in Randolph County, Alabama. Vann graduated from the University of Alabama in 1950, and from the University's law school in 1951. He served as clerk to United States Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, and was present in the courtroom when the court handed down the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education school desegregation decision. After completing his term as court clerk Vann settled in Birmingham and joined the law firm of White, Bradley, Arant, All and Rose. In 1963 Vann helped organize a referendum that changed Birmingham's form of government from a three-member commission to a mayor and nine-member council. Vann served as a special assistant to Birmingham mayor Albert Boutwell under the new city government. In 1971 Vann was elected to the Birmingham city council. That same year he helped lead an unsuccessful campaign, known as "One Great City," to consolidate the city governments of Birmingham and its suburbs into a single countywide municipal government. Vann was elected mayor of Birmingham in 1975 and served one term, losing his bid for reelection to Richard Arrington, Jr. In 1980 Vann became a lobbyist and special council to Arrington, and served two terms as chair of the Birmingham Water Works and Sewer Board. As council to the mayor Vann oversaw an aggressive annexation campaign, adding substantial areas south of Birmingham to the city limits and frustrating efforts by several Birmingham suburbs to block the city's growth. Vann was active in civic organizations and was a founding board member of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

I have four goals for the course: to increase and make more sophisticated our understanding of what actually happened during the CRM, to consider the various roles played by lawyers and the law in promoting (and hindering) significant social change, to see what lessons the era of the CRM suggests for apparently similar problems we face today, and to promote consideration of ways in which each of us can contribute to humane social change.

    Building Racial Bridges: Why We Can’t Wait by Martin Luther King, Jr. February 2, 2016 Discussion led by Collin College Professor Michael Phillips Background information: “Jim Crow” was a character in the minstrel shows where white entertainers would blacken their faces and perform satirical reviews of current events as if they were African Americans. The Jim Crow Laws came to set the boundaries of segregation. Racial separation rose after slavery and became legal in the 1880’s. At that time poor whites had the distinction of never being someone’s property, bought or sold, or families separated. With the 13th (abolishing slavery), 14th (giving blacks citizenship), and 15th (giving blacks voting rights) amendments being passed, poor whites became discontent. They had no distinctive rights over the Negro. Populism, a radical movement working for justice and equal rights for all, rose in the 1880’s and ‘90’s. It involved the support of both black and white farmers working together toward economic justice and represented a threat to the Southern economic power structure. Two types of segregation: De jure – by law, evident in the South (separate schools, doors for public places, separate Bibles for swearing in, even the emergency blood supply, black women not allowed to try on or even touch clothes before purchase) De facto – practiced in the North (understood parameters, cultural, redlining in which banks and realtors would keep people of color out of certain neighborhoods) Populist Movement collapsed in 1896 with the re-establishing of segregation laws. 1919 Red Summer – labeled for the volume of blood shed, whites attacking blacks.

    BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY Department of Archives and Manuscripts Connor, Theophilus Eugene 'Bull' Papers, 1951, 1957-1963 Background: Theophilus Eugene Connor was born in Dallas County, Alabama in 1897. Trained as a telegraph operator, Connor settled in Birmingham in the 1920s and worked as a radio sports announcer. Capitalizing on his popularity with radio listeners and his well-known nickname (,Bull'), Connor entered politics in 1934 and was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives. Connor was elected Public Safety Commissioner of Birmingham in 1937, a position that gave him administrative authority over the city's police and fire departments, public schools, public health and the public libraries. He held this position until 1954, and held the position again from 1958 to 1963 when he was forced from office by a change in the city form of government. During his long political career Connor ran two unsuccessful campaigns for governor of Alabama and was a leader of the 1948 Dixiecrat revolt. From 1964 to 1973 he served as President of the Alabama Public Service Commission, the state agency that regulates public utilities. Connor died in Birmingham in 1973. Eugene 'Bull' Connor is most famous for his staunch defense of racial segregation and for ordering the use of police dogs and fire hoses to disperse civil rights demonstrators in Birmingham during the spring of 1963. Scope and Content: These papers, which consist of letters, memoranda, clippings, photographs, and reports are the office files kept by Connor during his last five years as Commissioner of Public Safety. The papers from Connor's earlier terms were destroyed when he left office in 1954.

Organizations and individuals throughout the United States called for racial justice and for the termination of segregation in the South. A group that had a significant impact on the outcome of the Civil Rights movement in Birmingham, Alabama was young children. In Birmingham, the local coalition began to call for children to march in protests in place of their parents. So, if arrests were to transpire, less economic stress would occur because adults could still be working and making an income. From May 2nd to May 7th, 1963, over 2,000 children marched across Birmingham, Alabama to nonviolently protest racial inequality in their city. Children’s involvement in the 1960s civil rights protests in Birmingham was critical to a successful outcome in the movement.
