I’m excited to show you the best of Europe and her Christmas Markets on our Danube River cruise. ICONIC CHRISTMAS MARKETS OF EUROPE Dec. 14 - Nuremberg, Germany: Embarkation. Board your luxurious river cruise ship, the Avalon Envision. The ship will moor overnight in Nuremberg. This week we visit the famous Christkindlesmarkt (Christmas Markets) along the Danube River with castles along the way. It is everything you picture Christmas in Eu- rope, music, food, holiday traditions, fun times together and an experience never to be forgotten. Dec. 15 - Nuremberg, Germany: Christkindlesmarkt is a Christmas market that is held annually in Nuremberg, Germany. The most famous of all Europe’s Christmas Markets is at Nuremberg. It takes place during Advent in the Hauptmarkt, the central square in Nuremberg’s old town, and in adjoining squares and streets. The tradition of Christkindlesmarket, gingerbread, and bratwurst made this Bavarian city famous. The Christmas Market is located in scenic “Old Town” with music, entertainment, food, mulled wine, and shopping everything Christmas. Dec. 16 - Regensberg, Germany: Enjoy “Christmas Magic” in Bavaria’s Medieval Miracle city. In addition to Regensburg’s unique Christmas Market you have an opportunity to visit Altes Rathaus in Old Town and Porta Pretoria, the entrance to the Castra Regina fortress built in 179 AD. Regensberg is known for its well-preserved medieval core. The 12th-century Stone Bridge, a 1,000 foot-icon with 16 arches, crosses the river to the Old Town. The 13th-century Regensburg Cathedral, a twin-spired Gothic landmark, is home to the Regensburger Domspatzen choir. Dec. 17 - Passau, Germany: Passau, a German city on the Austrian border, lies at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers. Known as the Three Rivers City, it's overlooked by the Veste Oberhaus, a 13th-century hilltop for- tress housing a city museum and observation tower. The old town below is known for its baroque architecture, including St. Stephen's Cathedral, featuring distinctive onion-domed towers and an organ with 17,974 pipes. At Christmas time, the Old Town is festively decorated - especially the Cathedral Square, the home of the Christmas Market located in front of the St. Stephan Cathedral in the Old Town center of Passau. Holiday stalls show and sell special Christmas goods, presents, arts and crafts, and Christmas specialties like Lebkuchen, gin- gerbread, Glühwein and a lot of others are offered to the visitors. Every day of- fers different concerts of music groups and choirs. Artists and craftsmen of Passau will present and exhibit their handcraft at the Christmas Market. An optional tour to Salzburg, Austria is available to see the setting of “The Sound of Music” and learn the story behind the beloved Christmas hymn, “Silent Night.” Dec. 18 - Passau, Austria: Melk is an Austrian town on the River Danube, west of Vienna. It’s known for the 11th-cen- tury Melk Abbey, a vast monastery built high above the town. Gold statuary adorns its domed Abbey Church, and the huge library houses medieval manuscripts. The Marmorsaal is a baroque hall with a ceiling fresco and red marble walls. Visit the splendid Wachau Valley. Tonight, an optional tour to a Royal Waltz concert is available. Dec. 19 - Vienna, Austria: Vienna, Austria’s capital, lies in the country’s east on the Danube River. Its artistic and intellectual legacy was shaped by residents including Mo- zart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. The city is also known for its Imperial palaces, in- cluding Schönbrunn, the Habsburgs’ summer residence. In the MuseumsQuartier district, historic and contemporary buildings display work by Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and other artists. The Old Viennese Christmas Market on Freyung in the city center is com- mitted to tradition. A Christmas market was held here as early as 1772; today, it is a place to buy handicrafts, glass decorations, traditional mangers and ceramics. Festive Advent music can be heard on the square. There’s not just one Christmas Market in Vi- enna, but 10 major markets and numerous smaller Christmas Markets dot the city. And don’t miss Wiener Schnitzel for dinner, Vienna’s most popular culinary dish with apfel- strudel (apple strudel) for dessert. Dec. 20 - Vienna, Austria: Disembark this morning. Transfer to the Vienna Airport for your return flights home or extend your stay in Europe. Cruise Tours & Excursions are Included. On our cruise you will enjoy an extensive lineup of included tours. REFORMATION 500TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR & DANUBE RIVER CRUISE Hosted by Bill and Angie Heston October 2-13, 2017 Sponsored by First Presbyterian Church Adult Enrichment Featuring a land tour to Wittenberg, Germany where in 1517, Martin Luther “nailed his 95 Theses” on the door of the Castle church which eventually led to the birth of the Protestant Church. The trip includes a 7-night cruise on the Danube River from Nuremberg, Germany to Budapest, Hungary with stops in Regensburg, Passau, Linz, Melk, and Vienna. MONDAY, OCTOBER 2 Meet at IAH for departure to Germany. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3 … BERLIN Arrive Berlin at 11:30 am. Upon arrival at the airport, a local representative will transfer our group to the Adlon Kempinski Hotel. After check-in and lunch, we’ll tour Berlin with an expert local guide visiting the Reichstag, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, whose ruin stands as a dramatic reminder of World War II. Pass by Potsdamer Platz, a bustling cross-section of the city’s past. Once desolate and divided by the Berlin Wall, the square’s redevelopment can be regarded as a statement of intent for the reunified city. Next is ‘Checkpoint Charlie’, the famous crossing point between East and West Berlin during the years of partition. We end the tour with a visit to Berlin Cathedral, the largest 20th Century Protestant church in the country. (B) WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4 … WITTENBERG, LEIPZIG, BAMBERG We’ll have an early morning departure from Berlin and travel to Wittenberg, the city known as the “Mother of the Reformation.” It was here that Martin Luther lived and preached, and on October 31, 1517, he reportedly nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the All Saint’s Castle Church, commonly referred to as Schlosskirche, which we will visit.

  • Outdoor Museums in the Bavarian-Bohemian Borderland a Glimpse Into the Past
Outdoor Museums in the Bavarian-Bohemian Borderland A glimpse into the past Across the border and to the south of Markt Eisenstein is the Museumsdorf Bayerischer Wald, an outdoor museum featuring some 50 buildings originally constructed in the Bavarian-Bohemian forest between the 17th and the 19th centuries. The museum is located on the outskirts of Tittling, a small town close to Passau, in eastern Bavaria. The wooden structures were acquired by collector, Georg Höltl, who dismantled them in their original location and reconstructed them at the site of the museum. There, he re-created a forest village, depicting the life of the villagers who lived in the Bavarian Woods at that time. The village museum contains cottages, barns, grain mills, a saw mill, a chapel, smithies, and an old schoolhouse. The Museumsdorf Bayerischer wald (Photo )by SAM 1999) original glassworks building belonging to the Bohemian Lötz glassworks is also found here. The structures are filled with furniture, farm equipment and other items from the period. Visitors to this village museum have a unique opportunity to envision what life was like for those who lived in the Bayerischer Wald/ Bohmerwald in previous centuries. The Finsterau Open-Air Museum, is found in the Bavarian Forest National Park, close to the Bohemian forest (Bohmerwald), and approximately 32 miles from Passau. A variety of farmhouses and outbuildings, along with a village smithy, a wooden chapel and a traveler’s inn, originally built in various areas of the Bavarian forest, have been re-located here. Structures have been maintained in their original time-worn condition to allow visitors a glimpse of how life was lived in a by-gone era.
