Abstracts This document is an edited record of the conversations between the Apollo 16 astra- nauts and mission control pertaining to the geology of the landing site. It contains all discussions and observations documenting the lunar landscape, its geologic characteristics, the rocks and soils collected, and the lunar surface photographic record along with supplementary remarks essential to the continuity of events during the mission. This transcript is derived from audio tapes and the NASA Technical Air-to-Ground Voice Transcription and includes time of transcription and, photograph and sample numbers. The Apol lo 16 crew spent 20 .2 hours in surface exp lorat ion and traversed approx imate ly 27 km on the lunar rov ing vehicle. This document is an ed·i ted recor{l of the conversat i ons between astronauts John W. Young and Char les M. Duke on the lunar surface and EVA capcom Anthony W. Eng l and at Mission Contro l in Houston during the descent, l�nd ing, and 71 hour� of lunar stay time. It al�o contafns �and ing site· observations by command modu le pi lot Thomas K. Mattingly as wei I as remarks by al I three astronauts during the transearth phase of the mission. It Is a condensation hopefu lly· of al I the verba l data having geologic significance. The sources of th is voi ce transcript are the comp lete aud io and video tapes recorded during the EVAs and the Technical Air-to-Ground Voice Transcription prepared by NASA. The voice record is listed chrono logical ly with each individua l comment preceded by the day, hour, minute and second in Apol lo Elapsed Time <AETl when the statement was made. Apol lo Elapsed Time is the true mission-e l apsed time after I Htoff from Cape Kennedy at 12:54 p.m. E.S.T. on Apri I 16, 1972. [1] The strike and dip of lithologic units imaged in stereo by the Spirit rover in the Columbia Hills using three-dimensional imaging software shows that measured dips (15– 32°) for bedding on the main edifice of the Columbia Hill are steeper than local topography (8–10°). Outcrops measured on West Spur are conformable in strike with shallower dips (7–15°) than observed on Husband Hill. Dips are consistent with observed strata draping the Columbia Hills. Initial uplift was likely related either to the formation of the Gusev Crater central peak or ring or through mutual interference of overlapping crater rims. Uplift was followed by subsequent draping by a series of impact and volcaniclastic materials that experienced temporally and spatially variable aqueous infiltration, cementation, and alteration episodically during or after deposition. West Spur likely represents a spatially isolated depositional event.
