1 Chronicles 20 1 Chronicles 20 New King James Version (NKJV) 1 Chronicles 20 Rabbah Is Conquered 1 It happened in the spring of the year, at the time kings go out to battle, that Joab led out the armed forces and ravaged the country of the people of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. And Joab defeated Rabbah and overthrew it. 2 Then David took their king’s crown from his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it. And it was set on David’s head. Also he brought out the spoil of the city in great abundance. 3 And he brought out the people who were in it, and put them to work[a] with saws, with iron picks, and with axes. So David did to all the cities of the people of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem. Philistine Giants Destroyed 4 Now it happened afterward that war broke out at Gezer with the Philistines, at which time Sibbechai the Hushathite killed Sippai,[b]who was one of the sons of the giant. And they were subdued. 5 Again there was war with the Philistines, and Elhanan the son of Jair[c] killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam. 6 Yet again there was war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, with twenty-four fingers and toes, six on each hand and six on each foot; and he also was born to the giant. 7 So when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea,[d] David’s brother, killed him. 8 These were born to the giant in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants. .

The numbers after the colon are the superscript numbers in your Bible indicating the verses to read. Monday, Nov 23rd – 2 Samuel 21:1-14 This week we start off and there are no rebellions facing David. However, there are still problems. What problem will we start off with this week (vs. 1)? What has God revealed to David regarding the reason for the famine? If you recall back in Joshua, the Gibeonites tricked Israel into making an oath not to hurt the Gibeonites, pretending they had traveled a long way when they were really neighbors. Saul broke that oath out of a zeal for Israel. But the oath was broken nonetheless. Now God wants this wrong addressed. How does David go about reparations and what do the Gibeonites ask for (vss. 2-6a)? How does David respond to their request (vs. 6b)? Whom does David select and whom does David protect (vs.7-9)? What happens after this (vs. 10)? How does David respond to this reaction (vss. 11-14)? While a very gruesome story, there was closure that came from it on several fronts.

  • 1 Chronicles 1
The First Book Of The Chronicles Or Paralipomenon The Argument The Jews comprehend both these books in one, which the Grecians because of length, divide into two: and they are called Chronicles, because they note briefly the histories from Adam to the return from their captivity in Babylon. But these are not those books of Chronicles, which are so oft mentioned in the books of the Kings of Judah and Israel, which did at large set forth the story of both the kingdoms, and afterward perished in the captivity, but an abridgement of the same, and were gathered by Ezra, as the Jews write, after their return from Babylon. This first book containeth a brief rehearsal of the children of Adam unto Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and the twelve Patriarchs, chiefly of Judah, and the reign of David, because Christ came of him according to the flesh. And therefore it setteth forth more amply his acts both concerning civil government, and also the administration and care of things concerning religion, for the good success whereof he rejoiceth and giveth thanks to the Lord. 1 Chronicles 1......................................................................................................................... 3 1 Chronicles 2......................................................................................................................... 6 1 Chronicles 3....................................................................................................................... 10 1 Chronicles 4......................................................................................................................

Read 1 Chronicles 1 Pathrus, Casluh, from which the Philistines came, and Caphtor. 1 Chron 1:12 Spies are a terrible blow to the morale of any enemy. When the culprit is someone that was planted by another government, it is certainly disturbing to those who have been infiltrated. But, when the spy is someone from your own country who turned, the feeling is outrage. I remember spies that were caught during the Cold War selling secrets to the Soviet Union. These were Americans who for varied reasons, mostly money, chose to sell out their own country to the enemy. These spies became enemies from within. Here as 1 Chronicles begins, we see an early genealogy starting with Adam. We see Noah’s three sons Ham, Shem, and Japheth. Two sons of Ham, grandsons of Noah, were Casluh and Canaan. These two bring about some of the toughest enemies that Israel would face in its future. Casluh was father to the arch enemy Philistines, while Canaan’s descendants populated the land of Israel, and were destroyed by Israel as God’s judgment against their evil practices. These young men knew their grandfather, but they were not influenced enough that their descendants were close followers of the God that brought Noah and their father through the flood. Are you leading your children to help make a solid chain of faith years down the road in your family? Do you see tendencies now that may turn into tragedies later? Ask God to lead you as you lead your family, and if you have not entered this season of life, take the time to get prepared now.

  • 1 Chronicles Chapter 20
1 Chronicles Chapter 20 In verses 1-8: David's wars. Though the Lord will severely correct the sins of his believing people, he will not leave them in the hands of their enemies. His assistance will overcome all advantages of number and strength of those that defy his Israel. All that trust in Christ, shall be made more than conquerors through him that loves them. Verses 1-3: (See notes on 2 Sam. 11:1; 12:29-31). The chronicler was not inspired by God to mention David’s sin with Bath-sheba and subsequent sins (recorded in 2 Sam. 11:2 – 12:23). The adultery and murder occurred at this time, while David stayed in Jerusalem instead of going to battle. The story was likely omitted because the book was written to focus on God’s permanent interest in His people, Israel, and the perpetuity of David’s kingdom. Fuller details of this campaign can be found (in 2 Sam. 12:26-31). For David’s treatment of the Ammonites (see the note on 2 Sam. 12:31). 1 Chronicles 20:1 "And it came to pass, that after the year was expired, at the time that kings go out [to battle], Joab led forth the power of the army, and wasted the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. And Joab smote Rabbah, and destroyed it." “After the year was expired … David tarried at Jerusalem;” (2 Sam. 11:2 – 12:25). Kings often went to war in the spring because the weather was more favorable and the men had more time after harvesting their crops.

  • Scriptures and LEARNED Why
SEEK HIS FACE1 (INTRODUCTION) (Lights up on old, enfeebled King David slumped in his chair. On a small table beside him is his cup and a key. He looks up, sees the audience, and is startled.) Oh! I did not know the king was in such a state he needed all these nurses! (Upon brief reflection.) No, no. It is GOOD you are here — to witness my counsel with my son, Solomon, the new king. Welcome. (Waits for some response/acknowledgment, and then, receiving none...) You DO know who I am — or — who I WAS? I am David, son of Jesse2 of Bethlehem. The Spirit of the LORD spoke through ME; his word was on MY tongue.3 I was Israel's singer of songs4 — a man after God's own heart.5 Often — I sought His face. (Silence... then he brightens.) If you wait, you will see my son, Solomon, the new king of Israel. (Then remembers.) Of course, — you KNOW that. My mind! It has departed before the rest of me. This counsel with Solomon — could be my last. (The import hits him.) But what do you tell your son when you HAVE one last chance? What will help him, give him success? I should tell him what I've learned — the key6 to life. And do I have stories to tell! I've had the highest highs from El Shaddai, Almighty God — and, yes, the lowest lows — well earned by my foolish failures. (Looks up.) You say "the king should not say such things"? I MUST say them — acknowledge when I have failed — and when I have had success.

  • 13-1-Chronicles
THE FIRST BOOK OF THE CHRONICLES THE ARGUMENT THESE Books of the CHRONICLES are not the same which are so called, #1Ki 14:19, and elsewhere, (because some passages said to be there mentioned are not found here,) but other books, and written by other persons, and for other ends. Yet this same writer took out of those books such historical passages as were most useful or necessary. They were written after the Babylonish captivity, as appears from #2Ch 36:20, &c., by Ezra; as may be gathered not only from the same words used in the place now quoted, and in the beginning of that book which goeth under the name of Ezra, but also from some other passages, which we may observe hereafter, and from the exactness and diligence here used in making catalogues of persons and families, which also is used in the Book of Ezra. If one or two passages seem to be of a later date, those were added by some other prophets; there being some few such additional passages in the Books of Moses. The chief design of these books is, to complete the history of the kings of Judah, and to gather up the fragments of sacred history which were omitted in the Books of Samuel and Kings, and to explain some passages there mentioned, and to give an exact account of the genealogies; which (though ignorant or inconsiderate persons may think trivial and useless) was a work of great necessity, to preserve the distinction of the tribes and families, that so it might appear that Christ came of that nation, and tribe, and family, of which he was to be born.

1 Chronicles 20 – Thursday, September 15th, 2016 1 Chronicles 20 -- 1 It happened in the spring of the year, at the time kings go out to battle, that Joab led out the armed forces and ravaged the country of the people of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. And Joab defeated Rabbah and overthrew it. - You probably noticed chapter twenty is a very abbreviated version of what really happened when David stayed in Jerusalem. - This for a couple of reasons one of which is that Chronicles is written to the post-exilic Jews, such that they already knew of it. - Secondly, it’s believed the exclusion of David’s adultery with Bathsheba and murder of Uriah was to give the Israelites hope. - Before we move on to the rest of the chapter, I’m hoping you’ll kindly indulge me as we revisit some of the lessons from this. - It all started when David made the catastrophic decision to remain in Jerusalem instead of going to battle as kings did in spring. - This led to one particular evening when he couldn’t fall asleep then gets up and notices Bathsheba bathing on the roof close by. - In spite of the warnings David sends for her lies with her and she returns to her home, and it would appear he gets away with it. - That is until Bathsheba sends a message to David that she is pregnant with his child. Then David’s response is just disastrous. - Instead of confessing his sin David seeks to cover up his sin and in so doing ties the hands of God’s forgiveness and cleansing.
