Josephus As Political Philosopher: His Concept Of Kingship Abstract Scholars who have discussed Josephus’ political philosophy have largely focused on his concepts of aristokratia or theokratia. In general, they have ignored his concept of kingship. Those that have commented on it tend to dismiss Josephus as anti-monarchical and ascribe this to the biblical anti- monarchical tradition. To date, Josephus’ concept of kingship has not been treated as a significant component of his political philosophy. Through a close reading of Josephus’ longest text, the Jewish Antiquities, a historical work that provides extensive accounts of kings and kingship, I show that Josephus had a fully developed theory of monarchical government that drew on biblical and Greco- Roman models of kingship. Josephus held that ideal kingship was the responsible use of the personal power of one individual to advance the interests of the governed and maintain his and his subjects’ loyalty to Yahweh. The king relied primarily on a standard array of classical virtues to preserve social order in the kingdom, protect it from external threats, maintain his subjects’ quality of life, and provide them with a model for proper moral conduct. -

King Jehoshaphat: Facing A Tough Situation 2 Chronicles 20 2 Chronicles 20:1-12 (NKJV) 1 It happened after this that the people of Moab with the people of Ammon, and others with them besides the Ammonites, came to battle against Jehoshaphat. 2 Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria; and they are in Hazazon Tamar” (which is En Gedi). 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 So Judah gathered together to ask help from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord. 5 Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, 6 and said: “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You? 7 Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever? 8 And they dwell in it, and have built You a sanctuary in it for Your name, saying, 9 ‘If disaster comes upon us—sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.’ 10 And now, here are the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir—whom You would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them and did not destroy them 11 here they are, rewarding us by coming to throw us out of Your possession which You have given us to inherit. -

Monday, Nov 23rd – 2 Samuel 21:1-14 This week we start off and there are no rebellions facing David. However, there are still problems. What problem will we start off with this week (vs. 1)? What has God revealed to David regarding the reason for the famine? If you recall back in Joshua, the Gibeonites tricked Israel into making an oath not to hurt the Gibeonites, pretending they had traveled a long way when they were really neighbors. Saul broke that oath out of a zeal for Israel. But the oath was broken nonetheless. Now God wants this wrong addressed. How does David go about reparations and what do the Gibeonites ask for (vss. 2-6a)? How does David respond to their request (vs. 6b)? Whom does David select and whom does David protect (vs.7-9)? What happens after this (vs. 10)? How does David respond to this reaction (vss. 11-14)? While a very gruesome story, there was closure that came from it on several fronts. -

The 2 Chron 13 account sees him fighting against King Jeroboam and declaring God has anointed Judah as the chosen lineage of David. And even though they were outnumbered 2x (400k vs 800k men) and Jeroboam had a sneak attack yet God aided Abijah. Yet in 1 Kings 15 it is said that he committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God. What King Rehoboam (his grandfather did) abandoned the law of the Lord unfaithful to the Lord He did evil because he had not set his heart on seeking the Lord. King Asa’s light could be seen (it was “different”) (2 Chronicles 14:2-3) 2 Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God. 3 He removed the foreign altars and the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. 4 He commanded Judah to seek the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and to obey his laws and commands. 5 He removed the high places and incense altars in every town in Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him. -

THE SYNCHRONISMS OF THE HEBREW KINGS- A RE-EVALUATION : I1 EDWIN R. THIELE Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan Another period of Hebrew history that has provided serious chronological perplexities is the century covering the reigns of Athaliah to Azariah in Judah and Jehu to Pekahiah in Israel. The reigns of this period are as follows : Israel Athaliah 7 years Jehu 28 years Joash 40 years Jehoahaz 17 years Amaziah 29 years Jehoash 16 years Azariah 52 years Jeroboam I1 41 years Total I 28 years Zachariah 6 months Shallum I month Menahem 10 years Pekahiah 2 years Total I 14 years, 7 months Since Athaliah and Jehu began their reigns simultaneously, and since Pekahiah terminated his reign in the fifty-second and last year of Azariah (z Ki 15 : 27)) the totals of Israel and Judah for this period should be identical, but we notice that there is an excess of approximately 13 years in Judah over Israel. SESSION 6 LEAVE A LEGACY The Point Godly living impacts future generations. The Passage 2 Chronicles 17:1-13 The Bible Meets Life We experience many of our greatest freedoms today because someone was willing to step out and do something that changed the world. We call those people legacy builders. Sir Nicholas Winton was a legacy builder. In 1938, Hitler ordered his troops to march into Czechoslovakia. Word was already spreading that the Germans were mistreating Jews, and Winton chose to do something. Even as he continued his job as a stockbroker, Winton began raising money to fund the transport of Jewish children out of Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and Poland. Because of his efforts, 669 children escaped what would have been death in prison camps.10 Vera Diamant Gissing, one of the children rescued, pointed to his legacy. She said Winton did far more than save one generation; because he saved the lives of these 669 children, he also ultimately saved the lives of their children and grandchildren. Talk about leaving a legacy! King Asa was another man who also left a legacy. In his life, we see a man who impacted the generations that followed him. The Setting The death of King Asa brought sadness to the Southern Kingdom of Judah. He had been the king of Judah for forty-one years. For many if not most of the people, Asa had been the only king they had ever known. The people loved him, as evidenced by the honors given to Asa at his death (2 Chron. 16:14).
