46 • National Bulletin on Liturgy Eulogies A Eulogy for Eulogies An Interview with Bishop Frederick Henry of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary

CBC Radio One, Sunday Edition with Michael Enright

This article is an edited transcript of an interview aired May 11 , 2003. The text of the letter under discussion follows. While the policies of other dioceses may differ in detail from that of Bishop Henry, the rationale expressed is a helpful pastoral explanation of the Church's practice.

MICHAEL ENRIGHT: The most famous eulogist in history, Marc Antony, got it half right. He came to bury not to praise. But time and tide have turned the eulogy, the once solemn funeral oration, into a mixture of showbiz, maudlin reminiscence, and low comedy. They can be solemn, as when King Hussein of Jordan said of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzha:k Rabin, "People who were once your enemies are sombre today;" or they can be downright goofy, as when someone said of baseball legend Mickey Mantle, "He is probably somewhere getting an earful from Casey Stengel, and no doubt quite confused by now." Eulogies can be cathartic for the mourners and comforting to the bereaved, but the question has come up: "Do they have any place in a Christian funeral service?" Bishop Frederick Henry of the Diocese of Calgary thinks not. He recently issued a pastoral letter banning eulogies from the Roman Catholic requiem mass. He has been critical of the practice for some time and he referred to the famous or infamous eulogy to his father by Justin Trudeau as good TV but bad liturgy. Bishop Henry is not alone. Many Anglican clergy here and in the United States have said eulogies belong at the graveside or at the funeral home, not during the service. Eulogies, they say, have gotten out of control. Bishop Henry, the question that people will have on first hearing about your pastoral letter, or reading about it, is: "What's wrong with saying nice things about the recently departed?" BISHOP FREDERICK HENRY: Well, obviously, there's nothing wrong with saying nice things about people. Actually, it's preferable to saying bad things in any context. I think the issue really for us is that eulogies are fine in themselves, but it becomes a question of when they are delivered, who delivers them, and what the overall general context is. We feel that basically the liturgy is not the appropriate occasion for that. One of the options, of course, is to present it at the funeral home at the wake service, or at the reception after the liturgy is over with, or even at the graveside. Now that doesn't mean to say that the liturgy itself cannot be personal and contain anecdotes with respect to the deceased whose life we are celebrating, but a [eulogy] is just inappropriate within the context of liturgy.

ENRIGHT: So you would not be opposed to the celebrant, the priest or the minister, saying something about the dead person? HENRY: No. As a matter of fact, a good homilist should actually begin with the life of the deceased person and integrate that into the whole context of salvation history and the praise of God. And that means that you have to take a little more time, perhaps, to talk with the family, if you don't know the people well, and to be personal and relevant. The days in which you could just simply pull one or two stock homilies for funerals out of your files are simply gone. You can't do that. Unfortunately, this makes things a little more difficult for the person who is presiding and giving the homily, but the homily indeed should exemplify not only the word of God but also how this particular individual attempted to live that word; if there are particular virtues there, then they ought to be acknowledged and celebrated.

ENRIGHT: Is it a recent phenomenon in Roman Catholic liturgy to have eulogies given? I'm trying to remember when I was young a hundred years ago; I don't think it ever happened. Is it a new thing? HENRY: It's one of those things that I don't know exactly when it made its way into the context of the liturgy. I think for us as Roman Catholics it was a very unusual type of situation. Sometimes it was a special privilege that was accorded to dignitaries and officiales in the secular government and so on, but it seems with the passage of time, and particularly with the favour of eulogies on behalf of some non-Roman Catholics, it gradually made its way into our liturgy. As a result, in the revisions in 1990 of the order of the funeral rite, we clearly stated in the introduction that eulogies are never to be given within the context of the liturgy itself, but it's taken a long time for it to filter down to the average person. ENRIGHT: What is the theology behind that? The idea of the funeral mass is to celebrate the lived life of the dead person, and I take it, the afterlife? HENRY: Well that's right. We believe that there's a natural development that should take place with respect to our grieving process, and the vigil or the wake-it's at that particular occasion that the reality of the death really starts to sink it. Friends gather to support family; they express their sorrow; there's a lot of reminiscing going on about the deceased. This is the time of true storytelling. When you get to the funeral mass itself, you're presenting the deceased to God; you're giving thanks to God for the life of the clearly dearly departed. But at this particular time, when you're celebrating the eucharist, the focus shifts from our memories and life with the deceased to now the new life that the deceased enjoys with God. So you have a natural movement from the past to the present, and then projecting us into the future with the eschatological hope of the life of the blessed in the kingdom of God. Eulogies have tended to dwell on the past and focussed almost exclusively on the deceased. They rarely give you a sense of hope or of projecting the person into the future, which is the natural flow of the liturgy itself. ENRIGHT: Is it a natural inclination, though, for people-the mourner, the bereaved, the next of kin and so on-to get up and say something about their father or cousin or friend? Isn't that a natural sort of human thing? HENRY: It is a natural human thing, but it becomes a question of when do you do that sort of thing? Obviously if you look upon the whole ritual-the wake service, the gathering at the funeral home, the prayers that are done there, the time of sharing and so on-that's the time in which we focus particularly on storytelling. We do that in a lot of different ways: you tell a story through the obituary column in the newspaper.

48 • National Bulletin on Liturgy A Eulogy for Eulogies: An Interview with Bishop Frederick Henry

Family members gather, and this has become quite the common practice: individual people will stand as they greet the family at the funeral home-and what do they do? They always mention something about the deceased: the context in which they met, how much the person meant to them, how kind they were and so on. And that's particularly the appropriate moment when some member of the family or a close friend ought to stand up and do a summary or an extended sharing on the gifts of this particular deceased person and how they saw them and how they enriched their life. That's the form there. Then once we've done that kind of thing, we've celebrated their life; now let's entrust them to be presented to God. So it's a different movement when you move into liturgy. ENRIGHT: I have a friend who's an Anglican priest and he's had trouble with families. They want three and four people to come and give a eulogy and they want six minutes each. And they don't brook any criticism, and he has had to actually edit what they're going to say and cut down on the numbers and so on, and it can get a little-a little uneasy for him. Does that become a problem? Has that been a problem in your experience? HENRY: Yes. Michael, I think everybody can give you-any minister who's been around at all for any length of time-a whole history of bad experiences dealing with liturgies or eulogies at liturgies, wherein you're held, sometimes, as an emotional hostage. When some body gets up, they can't speak; they're not accustomed to speaking; they weren't prepared for 500 people sitting out there hanging on every word. They get all choked up, emotional. Sometimes they say things that are totally irreverent and actually have no place within the context of a Christian funeral service. So we've all had those experiences. I had one experience one time that really turned me off, where one of the members of the family got up and praised this deceased man, who was the husband and father of the family, but it turned out that, anybody who really knew him, knew he was a wife-beater, an alcoholic, and a crook. And one person stood up and made him out to be a saint. Well I thought this was making a mockery of the whole thing. You can't do that. ENRIGHT: Say nothing but good; isn't that the idea? HENRY: Well, you would hope that that might be the idea. But, you see, you don't always get people even following a script. I mean, for a while, we tried to say okay well show us what you're going to say, but then you get the person up there saying, "Well I had this script prepared but I just want to talk from my heart, and I want to tell you how I feel." This is really very unfortunate. Even if you look at it from a business point of view, the poor funeral directors ... must be pulling their hair out saying, "Oh my God, we didn't count on this; this extra 43 minutes added to the ceremony itself." So it gets difficult for them too. ENRIGHT: Have you or your curates ever had to get out the hook? I mean someone going on. HENRY: Well there is a nice way sometimes of finding out where that microphone switch is and turning it off in mid-sentence of someone, but you don't really want to embarrass anyone either. So, when we stand back and explain this in most instances to people today, we've all had sufficient horror experiences that most people understand. The difficulty I'm finding is that if someone has been inactive for a number of years and does not have very much of an appreciation for the eucharist itself, and for liturgy, they tend to put every emphasis on the eulogy and its importance; this represents, for us, a fracturing of what we're supposed to be doing when we're worshipping God at this time. ENRIGHT: Is the funeral mass--or any Christian funeral service-for the benefit of the family or is it something else? Is it for the community? It's a simple question, perhaps a simple-minded question, but who's it for anyway? Is it for the dead person?

Volume 37 • Number 176 • 49 A Eulogy for Eulogies: An Interview with Bishop Frederick Henry

HENRY: Well that becomes an interesting question. There was one incident reported to me recently where a young teenager got up, despite the fact that the family had said we're not going to have any eulogy, no words of remembrance spoken. The wife did not want this to happen. The other brothers and sisters didn't want this to happen. But this person did so on their own and stood up there; it turned out to be a very self-serving act, not respecting the other members of the family. And this person just wanted to emotionally dump on everybody else in the congregation. That's a very self-serving type of exercise. There are other times; and when we tell the story, I think this does indeed build the family up. It shows the virtue of the person. It shows how much they meant to others and that this person was a loving and significant contributor to the society. So that's all good stuff. But you can't always control what's being said. Consequently it's much better, and I find that people are much more relaxed, in a less formal context than liturgy itself, which tends to be very formal and rituaL ENRIGHT: What about the situation where you have a public figure: Pierre Trudeau? And we all remember, some of us painfully, the service for Princess Diana, where here brother, Lord Spencer, got up and dumped on everybody in the Royal Family. Should there be exceptions made for the public person? I remember Teddy Kennedy's eulogy for his brother Robert in 1968, which was very moving in St. Patrick's CathedraL Is it different for the renowned? HENRY: I don't like to think of anybody, as they stand before God, as being more important than anyone else. When we're all going to be going to the judgement seat of the Lord, we're all going to be begging for mercy. I don't care what our standing was in this particular life. And I don't want to get caught in this situation of saying, "Oh yeah, if you've got money you can get anything. So you can get a eulogy if you're somebody important or if you've got money and were big contributors to the church." How you draw that line-it's so difficult! I have simply added a third particular option that people can choose if they want to, and it is third and it's not recommended. But before the body is actually brought into the church, if everybody is seated in the church, if they want to have a eulogy or words of remembrance before the liturgy begins, fine. I'll tolerate that. But I don't recommend it. ENRIGHT: Oh, you mean before the ceremony, before the service begins itself? Someone could stand up? HENRY: Yes. Like they did with, for example, Mother Theresa. Before the liturgy began a eulogy was given and then the body was received at the back of the church and everybody began the liturgy at that particular point in time. Well that's one way of handling it pastorally. But the last thing I think any one of us wants to get caught in is that there are two tiers of believers: those that are the privileged and are the important officials, and then the rest of us. I think, as I said, we're all equal as we stand before God and if you're going to have a policy then it should be a consistent and coherent policy and applied all across the board. ENRIGHT: I was at a service a couple of weeks ago for a former boss of mine, a newspaperman. The service was held, and then everyone repaired to a community place and we all had drinks and that's where the eulogies were given. It seemed to be much more relaxed and people were laughing and it was, I guess it seemed, more appropriate. HENRY: I agree. I come from an Irish background and so the Irish wake was always a very wonderful celebration. ENRIGHT: A bit noisy sometimes, and convivial. But as people would gather there it was

50 • National Bulletin on liturgy A Eulogy for Eulogies: An Interview with Bishop Frederick Henry

not uncommon for one of the members of the family to stand up and start telling stories. And it was a wonderful experience because it was joyful; it was humorous; it was informal. It would be cathartic too. You could let it all out. HENRY: Absolutely, and I always think that that's preferable to something that's forced, and which you are absolutely insisting that people must endure. And as I said earlier, to hold a congregation as an emotional hostage is not really appropriate. ENRIGHT: Would you look with favour on it at the graveside? At the interment? HENRY: Yes. I think that's a different situation and that's one of the options. So what we're doing is holding out the two principle options: either at the wake service, which I think is preferable, or at the graveside itself. But, again, that [the graveside] is not ideal because ... [the eulogy should never become] the high point. ENRIGHT: What has been the response in the diocese? Have you had people standing up and saying "Bishop remember the beatitudes and blessed are they who mourn," and so on and all of that, or have people accepted it? HENRY: Well it's been pretty well accepted. I think my priests are finally relieved that a policy is being enforced because, as I say, every one of us has suffered with eulogies and through eulogies. Some of our people don't yet understand. It's interesting that the last little bit of publicity is about three and a half years after I initiated the policy. But it kind of took everybody about three and a half years to twig on ... to the fact that there was a policy. And then when I reissued the policy and expanded it a little bit, giving a little more latitude, that's when it got everybody's attention. So I'm sitting back shaking my head and saying where have people been for the last three and a half years. But, in general, I get a couple of nasty letters about it and then when I explain things sometimes people calm down, sometimes they don't. But most of the complaints have actually been from, I would say, non-practicing Catholics, who all of a sudden show up and get very demanding when they're dealing with the priest and they say, "Well, let me talk to the bishop," or "I'm going to the bishop." And if they can get through to me, which they usually can, they get the same answer they got from the priest, so we are in solidarity on this one. ENRIGHT: Then I take it you would-you will-make certain that there are no eulogies in that far off distant date when you're sent off. I guess you never ... HENRY: Oh, well, I can't imagine too many people wanting to say nice things about me when I'm sent off anyways, so I'm not worried about that. And really I don't care. The only one I'm really concerned about is what God is going to say of me on judgement day.

Policy on Eulogies, Diocese of Calgary

he funeral liturgy is first and foremost an act of praise and thanksgiving for Christ's victory over sin and death, a proclamation of the paschal mystery. This Tact of worship belongs to the whole community, to the whole Church, and not to any individual or group. Any elements that do not give expression to this act of worship are not acceptable. In every celebration for the dead, the Church attaches great importance to the reading of the word of God. The biblical texts proclaim the story of God's love and fidelity, reminding us of God's design for the world in which suffering and death

relinquish their hold on all whom God has called his own. I want to stress that a careful selection and use of readings from scripture will provide the family and the community with an opportunity to hear God speak to them in their needs, sorrows, fears and hopes. The homily should have a narrative style. At a funeral, there is storytelling to be done-a real person's story-not on its own, but in relation to God. The norm is clearly spelled out in the introduction to the Order of Christian Funerals: A brief homily based on the readings is always given afrer the gospel reading at the funeral liturgy and may also be given after the readings of the vigil service; but there is never a eulogy. Attentive to the grief of those present, the homilist should also help the members of the assembly to understand that the mystery of God's love and the mystery of Jesus' victorious death and resurrection were present in the life and death of the deceased and that these mysteries are active in their lives as well. Through the homily, members of the family and community should receive consolation and strength to face the death of one of their members with a hope nourished by the saving word of God (27). A eulogy is a certain kind of rhetoric or public speaking, focussed on the deceased person, with the intention of praising him or her. In this set oration there may be an implication that the praise is exaggerated or even untrue. A homily, on the other hand, is to be a discourse within the context of a worship service that invites the assembly to consider and interpret its life and experience in light of a biblical text or texts that have been proclaimed. What is at issue in the question of preaching at a funeral is clearly not that the homilist avoid any mention of the person who has died or the person's attributes and accomplishments. Rather, it is that such references be consistent with the spirit of the liturgy and find a proper context within the homily. At the funeral of a Christian, the homily should be genuinely eucharistic, a statement of praise and thanks to God. It should invite the person's family and friends to simultaneously hold on to the values and lessons of this person's life, entrust the person's final destiny into the hands of God, and remember the shortness and fragility of human life and God's invitation in Christ to live every moment fully and abundantly. A eulogy should be given in another context. There are three approved contexts for a eulogy or "words of remembrance": 1. The Order of Christian Funerals suggests the vigil of the deceased: "After [the prayer of intercession] and before the blessing or at some other suitable time during the vigil, a member of the family or a friend of the deceased may speak in remembrance of the deceased" (90). 2. At the gravesite or the funeral reception afrer the interment. 3. In the church prior to the liturgy, i.e. prior to the reception of the body at the entrance to the church. Under no circumstances at the funeral mass, not even just before the final commendation, is a eulogy or "words of remembrance" to be given.

he following pages provide hymn suggestions from the Catholic Book of Worship III for the summer months in Year C. Summer is a time when many people have Tholidays. Some travel for weeks at a time enjoying the warm summer weather. Others take weekend excursions or simply spend time at the cottage. Life in the parish slows down. Many parish groups stop meeting in the summer. The priest takes his vacation, the attendance at mass is down (or maybe swollen with visitors) and sometimes it's hard to find enough liturgical ministers to help at the weekend liturgies. Parish music resources can be thin as well. You want to encourage good singing, but it's harder when there are less people in the pews (or when the pews are filled with visitors), so ... • Keep it simple. • Learn little or no new music; wait to teach new repertoire when all the parishioners are back from summer vacations. • Use widely familiar repertoire; it is helpful to repeat hymns over a few Sundays. • Make it hospitable for visitors by avoiding pieces that are unique to your parish. • Repeat new music that was learned earlier in the year if appropriate. The Character of These Sundays In addition to the solemnities of Trinity Sunday (June 15), and the Body and Blood of Christ (June 22), the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary (August 15) is celebrated during this period. The 8th, 9th, lOth, and 11th Sundays of Ordinary Time are not celebrated this year. Although the gospel passages for the Sundays of this period highlight the call to discipleship, neither this motif nor the specific gospel stories of the Sunday should play a dominant role in our music selection. The most appropriate place for songs of mission is the sung recessional if the community chooses to sing at that time. Hymn Suggestions Though hymns are specifically suggested for entrance, preparation of the altar and gifts, and recessional, many (if not most of them) are interchangeable; for entrance and recessional try to choose an energetic piece that is appropriate for a procession. If your community does not know any of the suggested hymns for a particular Sunday, you can never go wrong by choosing a familiar hymn of praise to God or the Trinity. One alternative to singing an unfamiliar hymn is to change the tune to one your assembly knows well. Just be careful when choosing a different tune, and sing through the whole text to make sure there are no strange results. See the hymnal's metrical index found in both pew and choir editions of the hymnal (700). The Communion Procession for All Summer Sundays During the procession to communion, always sing a communion hymn. See the list below. The hymn begins "when the priest takes communion" (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 56i).

Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) Processionals In addition to those listed above, these hymns are also appropriate on Corpus Christi Sunday. 67 Ubi Caritas 376 Where True Love and Charity Are Found/Ubi Caritas 424 I Come with Joy Responsorial Psalm If the assigned psalm setting (# 113) is too difficult for the summer assembly, try using the refrain of# 151 or # 204 with the verses of the day.

Sequence The sequence (#693) is sung before the gospel acclamation. It is omitted if not sung by all. This text can be sung to any 87 87 87 metered tune. See the "Metrical Index" (#700). Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary Entrance and Preparation of Gifts and Altar Today is primarily a Sunday, the Lard's day: Mary is the principal witness to Christ and to the saving power of his death and resurrection. This is the focus of today's celebration. A careful examination of the liturgical texts of the day tells us that hymns directly to Mary are not necessary at eucharist today. The "Magnificat"(CBW III #14-I and 674-678) sung in the company of Mary and all the communion of saints is highly recommended.

Responsorial Psalm If the assigned psalm setting (#223) is too difficult for the summer assembly, try using the refrain of# 151 or # 204 with the verses of the day. 1 2th-19th Sundays Responsorial Psalm If the assigned psalm setting for any Sunday is too difficult for the summer assembly, try using the refrain of #51 or #118 with the verses of the day. If music resources are very limited, see other seasonal refrains listed at the bottom of# 114. (Verses of the seasonal psalms may be used with the seasonal refrains if necessary.) [I]
