Historical Overview
HISTORIC CONTEXT STATEMENT The following is a brief history of Oregon City. The intent is to provide a general overview, rather than a comprehensive history. Setting Oregon City, the county seat of Clackamas County, is located southeast of Portland on the east side of the Willamette River, just below the falls. Its unique topography includes three terraces, which rise above the river, creating an elevation range from about 50 feet above sea level at the riverbank to more than 250 feet above sea level on the upper terrace. The lowest terrace, on which the earliest development occurred, is only two blocks or three streets wide, but stretches northward from the falls for several blocks. Originally, industry was located primarily at the south end of Main Street nearest the falls, which provided power. Commercial, governmental and social/fraternal entities developed along Main Street north of the industrial area. Religious and educational structures also appeared along Main Street, but tended to be grouped north of the commercial core. Residential structures filled in along Main Street, as well as along the side and cross streets. As the city grew, the commercial, governmental and social/fraternal structures expanded northward first, and with time eastward and westward to the side and cross streets. Before the turn of the century, residential neighborhoods and schools were developing on the bluff. Some commercial development also occurred on this middle terrace, but the business center of the city continued to be situated on the lower terrace. Between the 1930s and 1950s, many of the downtown churches relocated to the bluff as well. -

At one time the site was the primary location for Water Environment Services (formerly the Utilities Department) and the Department of Transportation Development Services / Transportation Maintenance; currently the site houses a dilapidated office building, Clackamas County Fleet Services, Vector Control, Sheriff’s Office Fleet Operations and the Transportation Maintenance Division. The dilapidated office building, commonly referred to as the Utilities Building, was constructed and owned by Clackamas County Service District #1 (CCSD #1), and subsequently transferred to Water Environment Services (WES), although the County retained title to the real property on which the building was situated. The Utilities Building has not been used by CCSD #1 or WES for over a decade. -

Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze the dispersion of architectural types within the Willamette Valley revealed trends amongst the extant settlement architecture samples. Brownsville, Oregon, was identified to have a locally-specific architectural subtype, the closer study of which enabled deeper investigation of the development of architectural landscapes during the Willamette Valley’s settlement period. -

Over fifty-eight thousand dollars in gold coin was minted in Oregon City by the Oregon Exchange Company in 1849 and is known as Beaver money.1 The coins earned their name from the image of a beaver which was impressed on the obverse side of each coin. The production of these five and ten dollar pieces had the approval of both Oregon’s provisional legislature and George Abernethy the provisional governor.2 Unfortunately, the minting of this specie was problematic even from the outset. Beaver money finds its origin in the aftermath of the California Gold Rush when hundreds of miners returned to Oregon bearing gold dust. Estimates put the value of the gold in Oregon at over two million dollars.3 The gold was not fungible, which is to say that it was hard to accurately weigh loose dust on scales that were not uniform - the gold needed to be minted in a solid recognizable form of consistent weight. Store owners were accused of rigging their scales to give them more than an ounce, and customers were sometimes guilty of mixing yellow sand in with gold to trick proprietors.4 Uncertainty about the purity of transaction gold placed the dust’s value at anywhere from ten to sixteen dollars an ounce depending upon the store owner’s decision. 5 Joseph Lanes arrival as the first governor of the recently established Oregon Territory threw a wrench into the legislature’s plan. -

Converse ABSTRACT Purpose of the Study: The history of the Pacific Northwest has favored large, extractive and national industries such as the fur trade, mining, lumbering, fishing and farming over smaller pioneer enterprises. This multi-disciplinary study attempts to address that oversight by focusing on the early brickmakers in „the Oregon Country‟. Using a combination of archaeometry and historical research, this study attempts to make use of a humble and under- appreciated artifact – brick – to flesh out the forgotten details of the emergence of the brick industry, its role in the shifting local economy, as well as its producers and their economic strategies. Procedure: Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis was performed on 89 red, common bricks archaeologically recovered from Fort Vancouver and 113 comparative samples in an attempt to „source‟ the brick. -

Released when she was just 13 years old, vocalist Jojo's 2004 eponymous debut was a bona fide hit album and garnered the young pop star a legion of equally youthful fans, as well as lead roles in two films, including the 2006 comedy RV alongside Robin Williams. To say that the release of her 2006 sophomore effort, The High Road, finds Jojo on the cusp of superstardom is a bit of an understatement. Featuring production and songs by such in demand hitmakers as Swizz Beatz, Soulshock, and Scott Storch -- the man who made Paris Hilton sound good -- it should come as little surprise that The High Road is a commercially oriented, radio-friendly contemporary pop-R&B album. What may be a surprise is that it is really, really good. These are well-written, catchy pop songs with a healthy dose of hip-hop rhythm that serve as solid launching pads for Jojo's superb vocal abilities. Coming off as a kind of urbanized Jennifer Aniston with the chops of Beyoncé, Jojo is an assured and likeable performer who can somehow embody the yin-yang persona of a suburban cheerleader slinging hip-hop attitude, as she does in the video for the ridiculously overwrought and utterly addictive lead-off single, "Too Little Too Late." It also helps that she's matured just enough so that her somewhat sexy persona makes a bit more sense now than it did in 2004, and she easily sells the cheeky and raw dance-funk of such tracks as "This Time" and "The Way You Do Me." However, it's the blissfully melodic ballads and mid-tempo anthems that make the biggest impression here. -

Barlow Road Toll Collection Authorization By Samuel K. Barlow This note, signed by Samuel K. Barlow, authorized Philip Foster to collect tolls from emigrants using the Barlow Road to cross the Cascades on their way to the Willamette Valley. The history of the Barlow Road began in the mid-1840s when large wagon trains of American emigrants were making their way to Oregon from the Midwest. In the fall of 1845, hundreds of emigrants finally reached The Dalles, where they faced a logistical crisis. Only a limited number of boats were available to ferry the overlanders down the Columbia, and local food stores were dangerously low. Faced with this grim situation, several families elected to try crossing the Cascade Range rather than wait indefinitely at The Dalles for passage to Fort Vancouver. Headed by Sam Barlow and William Rector, these families set out along the Deschutes River in late September 1845. They were later joined by a second party led by Joel Palmer. Their objective was to find a southern route around Mt. Hood. While earlier Native and non-Native travelers had crossed the Cascades, none had driven wagons over the mountain range. The emigrants’ attempt proved quite harrowing, but ultimately successful. After caching their wagons and extra supplies five miles south of Barlow Pass, the emigrants made their way on foot and on horseback down the western slope of Mt. Hood. They finally arrived in small parties at Philip Foster’s farm at Eagle Creek—present-day Clackamas County—in late December 1845.
