Now in its third edition, the symposium focuses on revival of the oral tradition of Qawwali with a strong emphasis on the livelihoods of performing artists. This year, we discussed the anthropology and the social impact of art-form of Qawwali. This was achieved through a multipronged approach by lectures, talks, discussions, photo documentations and actual live performances. This seminar also discussed the simple and complex approaches necessary for the artists, who are mostly uneducated themselves, to attract financial support and thus at the same time increase their livelihood opportunities through their performance skills. The evening concert presented a hitherto unexplored perspective to the festival of Holi as the Qawwals sing in their powerful voices in jubilation, reciting verses with fresh and intriguing connotations to what is already known of Holi and Basant in popular folk songs and poetry. As the music form of Qawwali has eternally imbibed within itself influences from various communities in India, this is an initiative to bring this feature of Qawwali in public domain. A riveting and unique celebration of the festival of Holi bring forth its spirit of merriment and cultural harmony in the true sense, "Colours of Love" features traditional Qawwals singing the delightful play of Holi and the revelry of the festival of Basant as written by Sufi saints and poets. -

Singh Professor of English University of Lucknow-226007 ______________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: It is an informative paper on the construct, form, and expansion of Ghazal as a poetic form. The origin of the word ‘Ghazal' goes back to the Arabic word ‘Ghazal' meaning ‘deer' in English. The reference finds roots to the act of hunting a deer. When a hunter shoots a deer in a moonlit night in the Arabian desert, the deer getting pierced with the arrow, runs around helplessly in search of water. In this state, the throat makes the sound like "gaz - gaz". A lover, in the same way, pines for his beloved, and feels emotional bleeding; this leads to the making of Ghazal. The paper discusses various aspects of Ghazal. Key Words: Ghazal, Sher, Matla, Takhallus. The Ghazal is a Persian word referring to a form of Persian poetry. It became popular in Urdu literature later. It is, generally speaking, a form of poetic expression describing platonic love. The locale, tone, and content –almost everything around Ghazal find a lover and his unattained love as the central concern. The narrator almost knows it too well that the meeting of the lovers is unattainable, yet they keep striving till the last. This pang and desire emanate into the verses of Ghazal. The complete Ghazal comprise of Shers (couplets); most of the Ghazal has less than fifteen shers, A good Ghazal has approximately five Shers. -

A Journey through t he Seven Valle ys A Journey through the Seven Valleys1 of Bahá’u’lláh by Ghasem Bayat Preamble n this brief journey through the Seven Va l l e y s2 of Bahá’u’lláh, we will partake of its spiritual bounties, focus on its principal message, tune our hearts to the teachings it enshrines, marvel at its masterful composition Iand form, and recognize some of the distinctive features of this book as compared with Islamic mystic writ- ings. This brief journey is at best an introduction to this Epistle, and is intended to encourage the readers to embark on an in-depth study of the Seven Valleys to receive the full measure of love and life it off e r s . The Historical Background This Epistle of Bahá’u’lláh was revealed during the Baghdad period, circa 1862 C .E. It was revealed in answer to questions raised by S ha yk h M u h y i ’ d - D í n ,3 the judge of K hániqayn, a town located in Iraqi Kurdistan, northeast of Baghdad, and near the Iranian border. The words of the beloved Guardian in describing the significance of this Epistle and its relation to other Writings of Bahá’u’lláh provides us with a perspective on this book: To these two outstanding contributions to the world’s religious literature [the Kitáb-i-ˆqán and the Hidden Words], occupying respectively, positions of unsurpassed preeminence among the doctrinal and ethical Writings of the Author of the Bahá’í Dispensation, was added, during that same period, a treatise that may well be regarded as His greatest mystical composition, designated as the “Seven Valleys,” -

It is a condition in which an author loses the ability to produce new work or experiences a creative slowdown. The problem is more difficult in the context of poetry than prose, as in the latter case authors need not be very concise while expressing their ideas, also the various aspects such as rhyme, poetic meters are not relevant for prose. One of the most effective ways to overcome this writing block for poets can be, to have a prompt system, which would help their imagination and open their minds for new ideas. A prompt system can possibly generate one liner, two liner or full ghazals. The purpose of this work is to give an ode to the Urdu/Hindi poets, and helping them start their next line of poetry, a couplet or a complete ghazal considering various factors like rhymes, refrain, and meters. The result will help aspiring poets to get new ideas and help them overcome writer’s block by auto-generating pieces of poetry using Deep Learning techniques. A concern with creative works like this, especially in the literary context, is to ensure that the output is not plagiarized. -

Approximately 5-7% has been translated into English, but the works available are the most important. In this course we will undertake a systematic introduction to twenty of Bahá'u'lláh’s most important works, ranging from the Rashḥ-i-‘Amá (1853) to Epistle to the Son of the Wolf (1892). We will study the works in chronological order of composition, examining the themes in the works, topics that Bahá'u'lláh progressively revealed during His ministry, and related tablets wherever possible. We will not read most of the twenty works in their entirety but will study significant passages and sections from them. The course will appeal to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Bahá'u'lláh’s immense corpus. Before long, however, he began publicly teaching a form of primarily Chishti Sufism. The next seventeen years of his life would be spent crisscrossing the Western world giving lectures to thousands of Europeans and Americans in an attempt to spread this philosophical message. This message shifted over those first seventeen years and the subsequent century from one that heavily emphasized specifically Sufi elements of teaching and philosophy to a religious message that placed heavy emphasis on the universal elements that it considered to be the core of all religions. This philosophy is most readily observable and easily understood by studying its current iteration, the Inayattiya, who developed out of a number of schisms and splits in the mid twentieth century and trace their silsila, or spiritual lineage, back to HIK by way of his siblings and cousins, to his son Pir Vilayat Inayat-Khan, and his grandson, the current head, of the Order Pir Zia Inayat-Khan. -

Eclectic Sufism in the Con Temporary Arab World
65 Mark Sedgwick Theme section Eclectic Sufsm in the Con temporary Arab World Keywords Abstract—Eclectic Sufsm that might be interpreted as a modern form of subjec- Rumi; Elif Shafak; eclecticism; tivity construction has been observed in Morocco and Pakistan. This article reports hybridity; Sufsm; localization; comparable phenomena elsewhere, using the case of the Arabic translation of Elif sectarianism Shafak’s novel The Forty Rules of Love. The article argues that, in the wider Arab world as in Morocco and Pakistan, the localization of eclectic Sufsm is an instance of the reinterpretation of Islamic traditions to incorporate globally relevant social imaginaries. It questions, however, the association between eclectic Sufsm and individualism, and argues that there is also a further form of localization: the ap- plication of eclectic Sufsm to contemporary political conditions, notably the problem of sectarianism. Among the various modern subjectivities that are being formed across the Muslim world are subjectivities, generally found among the cosmopolitan upper middle class, that draw on ec- lectic forms of Sufsm, sometimes called “New Age” Sufsm. Tese eclectic Suf subjectivities have been observed in Casa- blanca, Morocco by Patrick Haenni and Raphaël Voix (2007), and in Lahore, Pakistan by Alix Philippon (2014). Véronique Alt- glas has compared these to similar processes noted among Jews, where forms of New Age Kabbalah are found (2014, 12). Tis ar- ticle adds to these studies with a study of eclectic Suf subjectiv- ities elsewhere in the Arab world. It argues that eclectic Suf sub- jectivities, an instance of “the interlacing of Islamic traditions with globally relevant social imaginaries” (Jung 2016, 19), show how the reinterpretation of Suf traditions can help construct modern forms of subjectivity, and how these forms of subjectiv- Mark Sedgwick is professor MSO of Arab and Islamic Studies at Aarhus University.
