Papua New Guinea: Volcanic Activity PNG Disaster Management Team Situation Update No. 3 (as of 9 January 2018) This update is produced by the PNG Disaster Management Team Secretariat in collaboration with humanitarian partners. It covers the period from 8 January 2018. The next update will be issued on or around 10 January 2018. Background Kadovar Island became active on 5 January 2018 with volcanic activity. The provincial government confirmed that to date there have been no casualties and the entire population of Kadovar island (591 people) has been evacuated. The Kadovar population was evacuated to neighbouring Blup Blup island and is presently being hosted there. Blup Blup’s resident population is approximately 800 people (143 households). Water and food sources on Blup Blup island are rapidly being exhausted by the additional population strain with immediate needs assessed by ward councillors to be food, water and shelter. The provincial government outlined its current response plan as two-fold: • Prime Minister’s Office will directly support the provincial government with food and water supplies for two weeks for 2,000 people (on Blup Blup island). This is being supported by a commercial barge engaged by the provincial government and PNGDF vessels once on site. Source: http://reliefweb.int/map/papua-new-guinea/papua-new-guinea- location-map-2013 • Within two weeks, Provincial Government is planning to The boundaries and names shown and the designations used on this evacuate islanders from Kadovar, Blup Blup and Biem map do not imply official endorsement or acceptance by the United islands (approximately 3,000-4,000 people) to a Nations.

  • Report on Drought Impact Assessment of the Schouten Islands, East Sepik Province, PNG 15 – 19 Feb 2016
Report on Drought Impact Assessment of the Schouten Islands, East Sepik Province, PNG 15 – 19 Feb 2016 Executive Summary The Schouten Islands are a group of small volcanic islands, located 50 to 60 km off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea in East Sepik Province. Covering approximately 50 km2, the islands have a total population of approximately 6,000 people. In late January whilst preparing its East Sepik drought response, Oxfam received reports about food and water shortages in the islands from Wewak based church groups, local NGO’s and government officials. These reports indicated the impact of the drought was greater in the islands than areas in the mainland that had previously been assessed. In response a team undertook multi sector impact assessments in 5 of the 6 Schouten Islands from 15th to 19th February. The current drought continues to have a significant impact on all the islands. Despite the return of rain in late 2015, the amount of rainfall is significantly less than normal. In the more remote, difficult to access rocky islands of Wei, Kadovar and Blup Blup in the eastern part of the group access to fresh water is severely restricted, food is in very short supply and cases of malnutrition are increasing. Based on the PNG government drought severity categories the islands are assessed as being category 4. Unless action is taken to address the issues being faced by the populations of these islands the situation will continue to worsen and is likely to reach drought severity category 5. An integrated package of WASH, food security and health interventions is necessary to minimise the ongoing impacts of the current El Nino drought, to halt the decline in the health of the population and to facilitate medium to long term recovery from the combined effects of the current drought and the next dry season.

1 A Trobriand/Massim Bibliography Seventh Edition: July 2011 Allan C. Darrah Jay B. Crain The DEPTH Project: Department of Anthropology CSUS In 1965 Crain created the first Trobriand Bibliography which was updated in 1993 by Gardener and Darrah and expanded to include materials from other islands in the Massim. The 1995 edition was compiled by Darrah with the help of Claire Chiu and the members of the Trobriand Seminar at CSUS. In 1999 and again in 2000 Darrah was responsible for the updates. Darrah and Crain have completed this 2011 update. This bibliography is very much a work in progress, containing a few incomplete citations and no doubt many errors. Anyone who would like to make additions or corrections should contact Darrah [email protected] or Crain [email protected]. Criteria for inclusion of materials has been flexible in terms of both geography and subject matter. The geographic focus has always been the Trobriand Islands and neighboring societies associated with the kula; however, there are also items which focus on Milne Bay Province and Papua New Guinea. Even though there have been no limitations for inclusion based on subject matter the main thrust has been ethnography. One major exception to the geographic criteria has been made; works by and about major Massim scholars, which contain little or no information about the Massim, are included. The compilers wish to acknowledge major contributions made by Macintyre (1983) and more recently Hide (2000) and most especially the superb PNG bibliography of Terrance Hays (http://www.papuaweb.org/bib/hays/ng/index.html.) Important contributions were also made by Leach, J.

  • Volcans Monde SI Dec2010
GEOLOGICAL MAP OF THE WORLD AT 1: 25,000,000 SCALE, THIRD EDITION - Compilator: Philippe Bouysse, 2006 ACTIVE AND RECENT VOLCANOES This list of 1508 volcanoes is taken from data of the Global Volcanism Program run by the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C., USA) and downloaded in April 2006 from the site www.volcano.si.edu/world/summary.cfm?sumpage=num. From the Smithsonian's list, 41 locations have been discarded due to a great deal of uncertainties, particularly as concerns doubtful submarine occurrences (mainly ship reports of the 19th and early 20th centuries). Also have been omitted submarine occurrences from the axes of "normal" oceanic accretionary ridges, i.e. not affected by hotspot activity. NOTES Volcano number: the numbering system was developped by the Catalog of Active Volcanoes of the World in the 1930s and followed on by the Smithsonian Institution, namely in the publication of T. Simkin & L.Siebert: Volcanoes of the World (1994). Name and Geographic situation: some complementary information has been provided concerning a more accurate geographic location of the volcano, e.g. in the case of smaller islands or due to political changes (as for Eritrea). Geographic coordinates: are listed in decimal parts of a degree. The position of volcano no. 104-10 (Tskhouk-Karckar, Armenia) was corrected (Lat. 39°.73 N instead of 35°.73 N). An asterisk (*) in column V.F. indicates the position of the center point of a broad volcanic field. Elevation: in meters, positive or negative for submarine volcanoes. Time frame (column T-FR): this is a Smithsonian' classification for the time of the volcano last known eruption: D1= 1964 or later D2= 1900 – 1963 D3= 1800 – 1899 D4= 1700 – 1799 D5= 1500 – 1699 D6= A.D.1 – 1499 D7= B.C.
