The formation and development of this iconic cultural spectacle of the indigenous community, the Karbi, of Assam are intricately connected to the ethnic identity assertion of the Karbis since the 1970s. This paper delineates the salient historical factors and incidents of the Karbi identity movement in reference to the making of this festival. Drawing on anthropological theorization of ritual by Victor Turner and other later researchers, this paper analyses the Karbi Youth Festival in terms of its instrumental capacity to intervene with the status-quo, by virtue of its liminality as theorized by Turner in the context of rituals, in consolidating a holistic Karbi identity in the emergent socio-political context. They have their own, pure individual narratives and never for once would they relent to dilute them. In this paper, I propose that although hybridization as a social act has always had been a perpetual process among the communities, yet its encounter at the inception especially in the postcolonial scene, is far from congenial, rather intimidating. “Diaspora, displacement, relocation”, the fear of cultural invasion and overhaul and the endless strife for identity preservation constitute the hybrid. In this case, I examine two texts of Rongbong Terang written in Assamese, viz. ‘Jak Herowa Pakshi’ (lit. Trans. ‘Birds of the lost flock’) and ‘Mirbin’ respectively based on the Singhason Hill conflict between the Karbi and the Kuki communities and the counter-cultural struggles of the Longnit-Langparpan valley people of Karbi Anglong. My objective here is to posit how the hybrid, blended with modernity, has led to a subculture of disenchantment, despair, intense and bland turbulence and digression within a small community like the Karbis. These texts of Rongbong Terang portray nothing more than a “shared culture” of violence and dismay while evoking all throughout the postcolonial spirit of Anderson’s “imagined communities”. The question to be asked here is, “Who is representing whom and why?” as modernity also gatecrashes the wits of uncomplicated minds resulting into a severe imbalance in the traditional but peaceful narrative.

The capital of Assam is Dispur and the state emblem is one-hoed rhino. Assam is bounded by Manipur, Nagaland and Myanmar in the east and in the rest by West Bengal in the north by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh and in the route by Mizoram, Tripura, Bangladesh and Meghalaya. Literacy rate in Assam has seen upward trend and is 72.19 percent as per 2011 population census. Of that, male literacy stands at 77.85 percent while female literacy is at 66.27 percent. As per details from Census 2011, Assam has population of 3.12 Crores, an increase from figure of 2.67 Crore in 2001 census. Total population of Assam as per 2011 census is 31,205,576 of which male and female are 15,939,443 and 15,266,133 respectively. In 2001, total population was 26,655,528 in which males were 13,777,037 while females were 12,878,491. The total population growth in this decade was 17.07 percent while in previous decade it was 18.85 percent.

Sarajubala Devi ================================================================= Abstract India is a multilingual country with 780 languages written in 66 scripts (PLSI), of which 22 are scheduled languages. India’s North East has about 220 languages which fall under three linguistic families. Every Indian school has a reflection of this multilingualism in terms of the numbers of languages coming into a class. The country set mother tongue based multilingual education as a goal of school education (National Curriculum Framework: NCF 2005) the stand has been re affirmed through Right to Education (RTE) Act 2009. As a response to these initiatives as well as from the recent trend of identity assertion phenomena in North East India, many tribal/minority languages are emerging in the school education curriculum. Karbi and Mising language of Assam have been introduced in the Education system in 1980s but the recent field work conducted in the two languages reveals that the people at large are not aware of the significance of bringing tribal languages in education rather it is considered as one of the initiatives of the government and there is not much people can do about sustaining these languages in education. The paper intends to look into the challenges of sustaining tribal languages in the education system in today’s globalised world.     Journal of Shanghai Jiaotong University ISSN:1007-1172 Noun Formation in Karbi Language: An Analysis Pallavi Handique Research Scholar, Dibrugarh University Introduction: Assam one of the North-Eastern states of India has widely been considered as an ethno-cultural mosaic comprising different enteric and linguistic group belonging to different races such as Dravidians, Austroloid, Caucasian and Mongoloid from the time immemorial. Importantly, this region along with its linguistic pattern has been a major area of attraction for the researcher of linguistic, culture and folk-lore and different studies have been made to unveil different dynamics of the lingual scenario of the region. Karbi people belonging to the Tibeto-Burman linguistic group mostly reside in the Karbi Anglong district of the State of Assam. However, their settlement can also be seen in other districs such as Sivasagar, Golaghat, Nagaon, Darang, Silchar as well.
