Iran may have been behind blast at Delhi embassy, ambassador says Ron Malka says impossible to know yet who was behind attack but ‘Iran is an option’; diplomatic mission’s activities continuing under high alert as investigation proceeds By Tal Schneider Today, 7:01 pm

Israel’s ambassador to India said Sunday that Iran is a possible suspect in a bomb attack on the Israeli embassy in Delhi last week, which was close enough that it was felt in the mission and could have caused much more damage. A bombing near the embassy Friday blew out the windows on three nearby cars, but did not cause any casualties. Indian and Israeli authorities are investigating it as a likely attack directed against the embassy. “We do know so far that it was a terror act aimed at the Israeli embassy in New Delhi, but the investigation is ongoing,” Ron Malka told The Times of Israel. “The explosion was heard clearly inside the embassy; it was very close, a few meters,” Malka said. “It could have ended differently and caused a lot of damage.”

Indian media reports said investigators had found an envelope with a letter addressed to the Israeli ambassador in the street describing the low-intensity explosion as a “trailer” and making references to “Iranian martyrs” Qassem Soleimani and Mohsen Fakhrizadeh. “We can end your life, anytime, anywhere,” the letter read. “Currently it is impossible to know for certain who the perpetrators were,” Malka added. “Iran is an option. But… we have to wait for an investigation and conclusions.” Soleimani, considered Iran’s most powerful military commander, was killed in a US drone strike in January 2020. Fakhrizadeh, one of the country’s top nuclear scientists, was killed in November — an assassination for which Iran blamed Israel.

In 2012, Prime Minister Benjamin blamed Iran for a bomb attack on an Israeli diplomatic car in Delhi that injured at least three people. Hebrew-language media reported that a group called “Jaish ul-Hind” claimed responsibility for the Friday explosion in a statement posted on the Telegram messaging service. According to a report by the Walla news site, the statement said the attack, which took place on the 29th anniversary of India-Israel ties, was in fact an act of revenge against the Indian government and that further attacks were expected, but with no mention of Israel. “I have not heard of this organization to date. It is unfamiliar, from what I gather,” Malka said. “The Indians are conducting an investigation of how serious it is.” He refused to confirm an Israeli report that the Mossad was also involved in the investigation. Malka said the embassy was already on high alert before the attack due to “threats.” He said that while diplomats were being cautious, they had not been cowed into shutting down activities. Gantz to Egyptian TV: Israel's objective is that Iran not become nuclear “It is not just an Israeli interest, It is first and foremost a global and regional interest,” the defense minister said. By UDI SHAHAM FEBRUARY 1, 2021 01:23 Defense Minister Benny Gantz speaks to Egyptian TV (photo credit: TAL OZ/DEFENSE MINISTRY/POLICE SPOKESPERSON'S UNIT) As tensions between Israel and Iran intensify, Defense Minister Benny Gantz said that options are on the tables for making sure that the Islamic Republic does not become nuclear. The defense minister said in an on al-Ghad channel that "Israel has a clear objective: that Iran not become nuclear. It is not just an Israeli interest. It is first and foremost a global and regional interest. “The IDF and Israel’s defense establishment are holding onto the option of taking action against Iran's nuclear project if that is what has to be done. I hope it doesn’t come to that,” Gantz said. Gantz then echoed remarks made by IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi last week, and said that a nuclear Iran would lead to a nuclear arms race throughout the Middle East. “The regime is fundamentalist and radical and ultimately wants to obtain nuclear capability not just to have it, but primarily for the leverage it would give them in nuclear deterrence. I want the public in Iran to understand me: I don’t have anything against them. Iranian citizens deserve a normal life like every other human being. But the regime’s support of terrorism, of Hezbollah, of the Houthis demands action." Responding to a question on possible Iranian civil nuclear generation, Gantz said: "If you wanted to develop a nuclear capability for medical purposes, would you have to hide it underground? Would you need to deny access to inspectors? We know the Iranians are trying to develop nuclear weapons and we will not allow that to happen. " Alghadis and Egyptian TV station broadcasting from Cairo. According to the Defense Ministry, it was a first-ever interview of an Israeli minister in the station.- Journalist Nazir Majli interviewed with Gantz in his office, at the Tel Aviv Defense Ministry headquarters. The interview focused on several topics such as Iran, the new American administration, the challenges and opportunities in the region as well as the upcoming elections. When Gantz was asked about a possible future regional war, he replied: "Unfortunately, any future war in our region would involve many civilians; it wouldn’t be just a military-to-military confrontation. “Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas and the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip aim their missiles towards populated areas in Israel – threatening Arab and Jewish communities alike. Eventually, we will have to attack missiles that are being stored within civilian populations. This is verified intelligence, and we saw the repercussions of such reckless practice by Hezbollah in the port of Beirut." Gantz was asked about intelligence capabilities, and replied it keeps maintaining “superior intelligence throughout the Middle East and, in certain respects, throughout the world.” “We do not use it for any purpose other than ensuring Israel's security,” he said. “When I tell you, I know there are homes in Lebanon that have guest rooms and missile rooms it’s not just a slogan. It’s the reality on the ground." Gantz then stressed that the American support for Israel goes beyond party lines. “Our ties run deep and close. I’m convinced that we’ll work to make sure that relations with the Biden Administration will be just as good as with previous administrations. The cooperation between our defense establishments is excellent at every level, from intel to strategic planning.” On the incoming administration’s support for normalization, he said: “Normalized, peaceful relations are the best guarantor of regional security and stability. The ties need to develop into ties between peoples and not just between governments and I hope that we’ll see progressively more of that. Israel has many abilities. So do Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Jordan, the Gulf states, Egypt and, Sudan. There is no reason we can’t enjoy them together. Our nations deserve that.” When asked about Israel’s relations with the Palestinians and possible negotiations, he said: “There is no reason that the wealth of Arab countries and commercial ties with them can’t be shared by the Palestinians as well. “I think we need to be in direct contact. It’s all of a 10-minute drive between Jerusalem and Ramallah. It’s unfortunate that we travel so far rather than finding a way to meet with each other right here,” he added. https://www.jpost.com/arab-israeli-conflict/gantz-to-egyptian-tv-israels-clear-objective-that-iran-not-be-nuclear-657368 [Interesting that last week he was chiding Kochavi for rather similar statements and even though he may have obscured them a bit more it is just as flagrant against the Sleepy Joe group as was Kochavi. – rdb]

Ministers meet to extend lockdown as virus shows no signs of abating Restrictions set to expire at midnight; Netanyahu and Gantz spar over rules, with PM seeking to apply them for another 7-10 days and defense minister pushing back By TOI staff Today, 10:47 pm

Government ministers held a cabinet meeting Sunday night on extending the nationwide coronavirus lockdown, as coalition infighting continued to hamper the government’s response and mass rule-breaking in the ultra-Orthodox community sparked widespread outrage. The lockdown is in its fourth week, but has not successfully brought down infections. New cases, and deaths, continue at a worrying pace, despite Israel’s successful vaccination campaign. The lockdown, Israel’s third since the start of the pandemic, is set to expire Sunday night at midnight. It has shuttered all non-essential businesses and most of the education system, limited movement and gatherings and closed Israel’s main airport. The Sunday night discussions came after two funerals attended by thousands of ultra-Orthodox in Jerusalem in violation of lockdown restriction sparked fresh outrage among politicians, the public, and business owners, who have seen their livelihoods decimated by the lockdowns. Earlier Sunday, the Knesset passed a bill stepping up enforcement of the nationwide coronavirus lockdown by doubling fines for violators. Defense Minister Benny Gantz and his Blue and White party had demanded the measure pass before holding the meeting on the lockdown extension, putting them at odds with Prime Minister ’s ultra-Orthodox allies in the ruling coalition. The cabinet meeting on the lockdown saw more bickering, with Gantz feuding with Netanyahu and health officials. The Health Ministry is demanding the lockdown rules be extended for another week and Netanyahu supports extending the restrictions for another seven to 10 days, the Walla news site reported. Gantz is calling for the restrictions to be extended for only three more days, with businesses in low-medium infection zones reopening on Thursday and the education system reopening next Sunday. Ministers are also discussing extending the shutdown of Ben-Gurion Airport, which also expires at midnight, for another two weeks, according to Hebrew media reports. Netanyahu at the start of the meeting urged ministers not to politicize extending the lockdown. At least one of his confidants, coalition whip Miki Zohar, criticized the ultra-Orthodox mass funerals, but Netanyahu has not explicitly condemned the events himself. There have been violations in all areas, but particularly in some parts of the ultra-Orthodox community. “We must extend the lockdown by a week and not politicize it, to focus on the violations of one public group or on other communities. Gatherings in every sector must be prevented,” Netanyahu said.

During the meeting, in a message posted to his Twitter account, Netanyahu said, “To be clear: a gathering is a gathering is a gathering. It doesn’t matter if it’s ultra-Orthodox, secular people or Arabs. Unfortunately there are gatherings on all sides, in all these public groups. We need to stop this immediately and stop politicizing it.” Health officials presented statistics to ministers at the meeting that showed a slowdown in overall morbidity, including in over 60s, but an increase in seriously sick patients aged 40 and under. Nachman Ash, the government coronavirus czar, said to end the lockdown “we must identify a clear and significant decline in the number of seriously sick and of the load on hospitals.” Ash said some 70 percent of new infections were caused by the British virus variant, which is believed to be more contagious. Sharon Alroy-Preis, head of public health services at the Health Ministry, told ministers at the cabinet meeting that some 40% of current coronavirus infections in Israel are among children and teenagers, a far higher rate than earlier in the pandemic. She said the number of people aged 40-60 who are on ventilators has recently multiplied by six, and that Israel has 25 people under the age of 40 who are on cardiopulmonary bypasses, and 17 on ventilators. Gantz and Netanyahu sparred over the presentation, with Gantz saying the statistics did not capture “the cost of the lockdown,” according to Walla. Netanyahu said, “There is a cost in quality of life for everyone, but I’m not talking about quality of life, I’m talking about lives.” National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat added during the meeting that Israel’s successful vaccination campaign was not enough to slow the virus’s spread. “The pace of infections of the mutated virus strains offsets the effect of the lockdown and vaccinations,” he said. Netanyahu said the British and South African virus variants were running rampant worldwide, and that Israel’s health system was teetering, but that Israel will receive approximately 1 million more virus doses within a week. Netanyahu also said that he had held talks recently with the health and education ministries about gradually reopening schools, starting with classes for younger children. “If there are no more surprises we will be able to gradually open the economy and the education system,” he said. Channel 12 reported statistics Sunday night showing that of 993,401 Israelis who received a second dose of the vaccine at the time of the survey, there have been 704 confirmed infections, 12 serious cases and two deaths. [Doesn’t sound to me that the experimental treatment and all these lockdowns are doing much of a job. Perhaps they should look at Africa and their statistics where HCQ is over the counter and started at the first sign of infection or more usually taken prophylactically one pill each week. – rdb] The Health Ministry released figures Sunday night showing the outbreak was still refusing to abate, with the test positivity rate remaining at a sky-high 9.5%. The figures showed 2,595 new cases were confirmed yesterday and 2,632 more were confirmed today by Sunday evening. The daily caseload usually drops over the weekends due to reduced testing. The total cases have reached 643,006, including 65,810 active cases — a figure that is finally starting to go down. Of them, 1,165 are in serious condition, including 406 in critical condition and 323 on ventilators. The death toll reached 4,786. The ministry said 3,056,065 Israelis have received the first vaccine dose, with 1,773,213 getting both shots. https://www.timesofisrael.com/ministers-meet-to-extend-lockdown-as-virus-shows-no-signs-of-abating/ [It is most unfortunate for these very important rabbi’s to pass away at this time because they are considered extraordinary sages of the Jewish religion and highly revered by the ultra-orthodox. While it doesn’t excuse there ‘lack of following the rules, if you stop and think about their culture and what is considered major religious duties for this group it is very understandable. – rdb]

For 2nd time in day, thousands attend funeral of rabbi, flouting lockdown rules TV news estimates 8,000 attend Jerusalem burial of Rabbi Yitzhok Scheiner, hours after 10,000 joined procession for Rabbi Meshulam Dovid Soloveitchik; both died of COVID By TOI staff Today, 10:57 pm

Thousands of people on Sunday night joined the funeral procession of a prominent ultra- Orthodox rabbi in Jerusalem who died of the coronavirus, in defiance of the lockdown rules, hours after another burial in the capital drew a massive crowd. Though officials said earlier that fewer people were expected to attend Rabbi Yitzhok Scheiner’s funeral than the 10,000 who packed the earlier funeral of another top ultra-Orthodox rabbi, footage from Jerusalem showed thousands crowding the second burial. According to Channel 13 news, some 8,000 people showed up in the capital’s Bukharim neighborhood where Scheiner, 98, was head of the Kamenitz yeshiva. The footage came despite Scheiner himself having discouraged large gatherings and urging adherence to government-ordered measures aimed at curbing the coronavirus outbreak in the country, including in a recent edict. The day’s first such funeral was for Rabbi Meshulam Dovid Soloveitchik, the head of the Brisk Yeshiva in Jerusalem and scion of the Soloveitchik rabbinical dynasty, who died early Sunday morning at the age of 99. Both Scheiner and Soloveitchik died of COVID-19. The issue of lockdown enforcement in ultra-Orthodox, or Haredi, communities has repeatedly made headlines recently, amid reports of flagrant violations, accusations of poor enforcement, and violent protests against police who try to ensure that the closure is being obeyed. Soloveitchik’s funeral, and the absence of any attempt by police to intervene, drew public criticism of the government’s selective enforcement of the health regulations. Ofer Shumer, a senior Jerusalem police officer, defended the force’s decision to not enforce the lockdown and prevent mass participation at Soloveitchik’s funeral, telling Channel 12, “There would certainly have been bloodshed” had police tried to disperse the crowds there. “Yes, the funeral was large, unwantedly so,” he said during the hours between the two funeral events. “But remember, the people have a responsibility; their leaders have a responsibility… Ultimately, the police can’t tackle everybody who breaks the restrictions.” “We prevented bloodshed today,” he said. “If we had acted with force… there would certainly have been bloodshed. I personally saw 1,000 young kids aged 10-14 [at the funeral].” MORE - https://www.timesofisrael.com/for- 2nd-time-in-day-thousands-attend-funeral-of-rabbi-flouting-lockdown-rules/

Israeli who recovered from COVID-19 reinfected with South African strain 57-year-old man had recently returned from visit to Turkey, was largely asymptomatic By TOI staff Today, 8:14 pm For the first time, an Israeli man who previously recovered from the coronavirus was found Sunday to be reinfected with the so-called South African strain, Hebrew media reported. The diagnosis came amid continued uncertainty on the effectiveness of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine that Israel is using for its mass inoculation program against the new strains of the virus. Ziv Yaffe, 57, from the central region of the country, recently returned from Turkey. Speaking to Channel 12 news, he said that whereas during his first infection in August he had “all the symptoms,” the second time around he felt fine. Yaffe returned to Israel on January 16. By January 23, he had a bit of a runny nose and decided to get a virus test, as he was participating in follow-up research at the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center. The test showed that he was reinfected and further testing revealed that he had caught the South African mutation. Shai Efrati, head of research and development at the medical center, told the station that Yaffe’s case was unique because doctors had a complete medical record of his bouts with the virus. “It is the first time that we have a full record, of infection, recovery, reinfection, and that the antibodies that he had protected him from the mutation,” Efrati said. “What we learn is that when there are antibodies, they protect against illness,” he said.

Efrati cautioned that it was too early to conclude that anyone who has had the disease is also protected against other mutations, saying it would require more similar cases before such conclusions could be drawn. But, he added, Yaffe’s case is “very encouraging.” Yaffe said that in addition to not feeling unwell, family members and others had been in close contact with him during the period of his second infection, yet none caught the virus from him. His case is the second time the South African variant has been brought into Israel from Turkey, according to the Ynet website. Health officials are concerned that the South African mutation, similar to the British and Californian strains which are considered more infectious, could lead to another wave of the virus among those who have recovered from previous infection and are not being vaccinated as part of the immunization drive. All previous patients with the South African mutation, first discovered in South Africa in December, were people who came back to the country from South Africa, Ethiopia, or Dubai, according to the report. On Saturday, Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis, the head of public health services at the Health Ministry, told the Kan public broadcaster there were preliminary indications the coronavirus vaccines may prove less effective in shielding against the South African variant. “We don’t have evidence yet that any of the variants are completely resistant to the vaccine, but there is some preliminary evidence to say that perhaps the effectiveness of the vaccine is somewhat less against the South African variant,” Alroy-Preis said. She said testing was still in progress to clarify the matter. Pfizer and BioNTech, whose vaccine is being used in Israel’s world-leading vaccine drive, said Thursday that early tests suggest their immunization would be protective against the variants from South Africa and Britain. Their study found that the antibodies were able to neutralize all the sets of mutations tested. It noted that the effect was “slightly lower” against three mutations in the variant found in South Africa, including E484K. But the firms said that it was “unlikely to lead to a significant reduction in the effectiveness of the vaccine.” The Health Ministry last week confirmed that three more cases of the South African coronavirus variant have been found in Israel, bringing the total number of infections from the strain to 30. Three of the cases were discovered in a random sampling, raising concerns of undetected community spread. Meanwhile, the British variant is spreading wildly in Israel, with health officials blaming the continued high coronavirus caseload after weeks of lockdown on the UK mutation. The daily infections continue to remain in the thousands, despite Israel’s strict restrictions and vaccination campaign. You can get your own antibodies from having a short mild case and then they probably will attenuate any of the variants of the virus. – rdb]

Big cities lead in virus immunity, while Haredi, Arab areas left behind NSC report shows ultra-Orthodox municipalities lag behind in vaccination, with immunity stemming mostly from high number of recoveries from COVID-19; Haifa boasts highest number of immunized, with 31.65% Yaron Druckman | Published: 01.31.21 , 22:43 Israel's big cities lead in the number of residents currently immune to coronavirus, with ultra- Orthodox and Arab sectors lagging due to low vaccination drive, a report published Sunday reveals. The National Security Council report examined immunity achieved through both vaccination and recovery from COVID-19. According to the data, 21.22% of Jerusalem’s residents are considered immune, some 193,000 residents, of whom 100,000 received the second dose of the vaccine and more than 93,000 recovered from the virus and developed antibodies.

This means about 10% of the capital's residents contracted the coronavirus at some point. In Tel Aviv, 27.96% are defined as immune, with 109,131 receiving the second dose of the vaccine and 16,755 developing antibodies after recovery.

In the northern city of Haifa, 31.65% of residents are considered immune, the highest tally in the country. About 75,000 residents received both vaccine doses and 11,521 recovered from the virus. In Rishon Lezion, the immunity rate stands at 28.71%, with about 60,000 residents receiving both vaccine doses and 8,817 recovering from the virus. In Petah Tikva, the immunity rate stands at 27.61%. There, over 53,000 residents received two doses of vaccine and 13,682 recovered from COVID. In Ashdod, the immunity rate is at 26.63%, with 41,769 vaccinated and 18,170 recovering, while in Netanya and Be’er Sheva the immunity rates are 25.28% and 30.56% respectively. In the Haredi city of Bnei Brak, where numerous violations of the coronavirus restrictions have recently been recorded, the immunity rate stands at 26.56%The majority, 37,217, recovered from the virus and 14,652 received the vaccine. In the Haredi settlement of Modi'in Illit, the immunity rate is at 28.69%, with 2,477 vaccinated and 18,697 recoveries. The lowest immunity rate appears to be in the predominantly-Arab city of Nazareth, where 18.25% of the residents are immune, with 7,845 vaccinated and 6,436 recovering. Additional data shows that in the Haredi city of Beit Shemesh, the rate of immunity is at 20.6%, in Holon 29.21%, in Rehovot 26.28%, in Ashkelon 26.15%, in Ramla 22.82%, in Bat Yam 26.79% and in Lod 21.9%. It is important to remember that in the ultra-Orthodox municipalities, the population is relatively young in relation compared to the national average, meaning many are not yet eligible to receive the shot. The data further shows that in several municipalities, over 30% of the population already received two doses of the vaccine. Majority of them are small towns and communities: Omer, Lehavim, Tel Mond, Meitar, Kiryat Motzkin, Kiryat Tivon, Givat Avni, Kiryat Shmona, Ramat Hasharon, Kiryat Ono, Savyon, Kfar Vradim, Mevaseret Zion, Beit Yitzhak and Raanana. Qatar pledges $360 million in aid to Hamas-ruled Gaza Gulf country has been providing $20 million to Gaza each month since 2018 to help cover electricity, salaries of Hamas's civil servants and monthly $100 stipends to scores of impoverished families Associated Press | Published: 01.31.21 , 18:54 The Qatari government on Sunday said it would provide $360 million in assistance for the Gaza Strip during the coming year, renewing a program that has helped reduce fighting between Israel and the territory's militant Hamas rulers. Qatar, an energy-rich Gulf country, has been providing $20 million to Gaza each month since 2018. The payments have paid for much-needed electricity, helped Hamas cover the salaries of its civil servants and provided monthly $100 stipends to scores of impoverished families. Qatar has provided additional funds for development projects such as new roads and hospitals. Israel and Hamas are bitter enemies that have fought three wars since the Islamic militant group took control of Gaza in 2007. The fighting, combined with an Israeli blockade and continued infighting with the rival Palestinian Authority, have ravaged Gaza's economy. The Qatari aid, delivered with Israeli agreement, has provided some relief to the local economy and is seen as a factor in preventing lingering tensions between Israel and Hamas from spilling over into renewed fighting. The Qatari announcement comes as Hamas and the Palestinian Authority are trying to hold new elections in the Palestinian territories. The vote is meant as a key step toward reconciliation. https://www.ynetnews.com/article/BkSqAUEe00

Palestinian Authority: Russian vaccines expected to arrive this week The Palestinians are also hoping to receive thousands of vaccines from China soon. By KHALED ABU TOAMEH JANUARY 31, 2021 18:37 The Palestinians hope to receive 5,000 doses of the Russian coronavirus vaccine Sputnik V this week, Palestinian Authority Ministry of Health officials said Sunday. The Palestinians also hope to receive thousands of vaccines from China soon, they said. The officials refused to comment on reports that Israel has decided to provide 5,000 Pfizer vaccines for Palestinian medical teams. “Our medical teams and centers are ready to start giving the vaccines to the people,” an official said. The PA would provide the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip with vaccines as soon as they arrive in the West Bank, another official said. The PA was in touch with Israel, the World Health Organization and other parties regarding the transfer of vaccines to the Gaza Strip, the official added. Thirteen new cases of the British coronavirus variant have been detected in the West Bank, bringing the total number to 41, PA Minister of Health Mai Alkaila announced Sunday. The new cases were discovered in Ramallah, El-Bireh and villages surrounding Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Hebron, she said. Two Palestinians from Ramallah and Kalkilya died over the past 24 hours from COVID-19, Alkaila said. Another 403 new infections were detected in the West Bank and Gaza Strip during the same time period, she said. According to the PA Ministry of Health, 2,012 Palestinians have died of COVID-19 since the novel coronavirus outbreak began. Fifty-seven Palestinians are hospitalized in critical condition, and more than 178,000 have tested positive for coronavirus in the past year, the PA Ministry of Health reported. https://www.jpost.com/middle-east/pa-russian- vaccines-expected-to-arrive-this-week-657336

PA arrests Hamas supporters ahead of elections On January 15, PA President Mahmoud Abbas announced that the parliamentary election would be held on May 22. By KHALED ABU TOAMEH JANUARY 31, 2021 19:30 Despite the talk about holding new general elections, the Palestinian Authority and Hamas are continuing to crack down on each other’s supporters in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The clampdown comes as representatives of several Palestinian factions, including the ruling Fatah faction and Hamas, are expected to meet in the Egyptian capital of Cairo soon to discuss ways of ensuring the success of the elections. On January 15, PA President Mahmoud Abbas announced that the parliamentary election would be held on May 22. The presidential election, he said in a “presidential decree,” would be held on July 31. In late August, Palestinians will also vote for the PLO’s legislative body, the Palestinian National Council. [You can pretty well guarantee that if an election even occurs it will be as crooked as the one that we just had with tainted ballot boxes and fudged numbers not even considering how many Hamas people will be locked up and can’t vote by the Fatah regime. – rdb] Abbas’s announcement was made despite that his Fatah faction and Hamas had failed to reach agreement to solve their dispute, which reached its peak with the 2007 Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip. Hamas has expressed readiness to participate in the elections. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization, the second-largest terror group in the Gaza Strip, has indicated that it may boycott the elections, as it has done in the past. No date has been set for the start of the discussions in Cairo. On Sunday, Palestinian sources said that PA security forces arrested five men in the West Bank on suspicion of being affiliated with Hamas. One of the detainees, Ameed Shehadeh, is a journalist from Nablus. The sources said he was arrested for criticizing the PA in a Facebook post. Also in Nablus, the PA security forces arrested Qassam Sabbah, who was recently released from Israeli prison and An-Najah University student Hussam Shtayyeh. In Hebron, the PA’s Preventive Security Service arrested Muhab al-Juneidi one week after his wedding. In the town of Salfit, Abdullah Abdel Fattah was also arrested by the PA security forces. Last week, the PA security forces arrested Nablus lawyer Awni al-Sharif on charges of “insulting” the Palestinian leadership on social media platforms. According to the sources, the latest arrests are in the context of the PA’s ongoing crackdown on its political rivals in the West Bank, including those suspected of being affiliated with Hamas. “The actions of the Palestinian Authority show that it is not serious about holding free elections,” said a Palestinian human rights activist. “If people are being arrested for supporting Hamas or criticizing President Abbas, how can we talk about free elections?” Last week, Palestinian officials in Ramallah accused Hamas of continuing its crackdown on Fatah members in the Gaza Strip, notwithstanding Abbas’s call for holding general elections. The officials said that three senior Fatah activists – Ahmad Naji, Mustafa al-Shannat and Shukri Abu al-Hosseen – were summoned for interrogation by Hamas’ Internal Security Force. “Hamas is continuing to harass and intimidate Fatah members in the Gaza Strip,” said a Palestinian official in Ramallah. “Hamas’ actions are aimed at intimidating Fatah and foiling the upcoming elections.” https://www.jpost.com/middle-east/pa-arrests-hamas-supporters-ahead-of-elections-657334

Iranians tire of government waste, failed foreign policies The statements illustrate the challenges Iran's government has internally. While it puts on a brave face abroad, the reality is more complex at home. By SETH J. FRANTZMAN JANUARY 31, 2021 23:33

Rooftops of Yazd on a sunny winter day in Iran. (photo credit: GETTY IMAGES) A press conference by Iranians from a society of “veterans” of the Islamic Revolution put out a scathing statement bashing the government for budgetary failures and “sacrificing internal trust for relations with several countries.” The article at Iran’s Tasnim News is presented without judgement but clearly appears to be intended as harsh critique of some current officials by more conservative forces. However, it is also emblematic of a critique that is heard in other sectors of Iran but which cannot be published because it represents dissenting voices. According to the article, the Revolutionary Front association dates from the 1980s and brings together like minded “friends.” The Secretary General of the Veterans Association said that "the group of friends is based on change and we have good intensive meetings on various occasions in the form of three organizations of the Veterans Association; We had a population of martyrs and a population of marchers.” While some in the Iranian regime would have us believe that what is important is the “resistance” and need to confront Israel, the real story in Iran is that people want basic things, not another ridiculous foreign conflict. "The main problem of our people today is the issue of livelihood and economy, which unfortunately, the government's performance in this area has not been appropriate," said the secretary general of the Islamic Revolutionary Martyrs Association. "There are many criticisms of the government and we even see friends of the government have criticisms, we must see what was the reason for such a problem for the government in the future." These men, and the press conference was only men, say that the government came to power with a series of promises and considered the solution to the problems to be the relationship with the United States. “The problem with this government was that it had all its hopes on the United States and the three European countries, and it did not pay attention to anyone who had sympathetic criticism.” This is important because it illustrates the refrain that has been heard against Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and President Hassan Rouhani that they have spent too much time chasing after western promises. Zarif feigns being tough at home, with his posts about Qasem Soleimani and the IRGC, but secretly he feels more at home in Washington or Paris than he does around the Taliban, who he met over the recent weekend. A classic charlatan, he knows he is lying on behalf of the regime he serves. The far-right voices in Iran also know his type have been lying for years. "Government officials trusted the enemy and tied the country's economy to foreign policy, but they did not succeed. Now we see that the government is still looking for discussions,” the men said in their statement. Without naming names, this is aimed at Zarif and his friends. Why are gas prices increasing and other economic problems arising? “Unfortunately, there was no trust inside and everything was sacrificed because we want to establish relations with several Western countries,” the men said. There have even been power outages. "The gas storage company was shut down and now we see a large amount of fuel oil and diesel consumed, which causes both pollution and the destruction of the country's reserves…The government has not been successful in exploiting renewable energy,” the statement notes. "Unfortunately, the country was abandoned and the neighboring countries were not considered for economic relations…. In Iraq and Syria, I see that the enemies have been able to have more economic exchanges with these countries.” Harsh indictment of the current Iranian government. It has squandered resources in Iraq and Syria. It has wasted time and precious assets. It has ruined the economy and the environment. Even worse: "A significant amount of the country's gold was auctioned off. Our $18 billion was wasted due to mismanagement.” And there is more: In the discussion of petroleum products, “we also see that the government did not believe in building a refinery.” The trust of the people has been “destroyed.” Such statements, made by protesters in 2019 led to a brutal crackdown in which more than 1,000 people were killed. The government has been hanging dissidents and crushing minorities such as Kurds and Baloch. But this critique above is made from a pro-government angle, critiquing the sell- outs within the current administration. "We accept interaction with the world, but we should not be happy with the enemy and consider interaction with the world only as interaction with a few specific countries,” the statement says. The secretary general of the Association of Veterans said that the parliament has approved to provide subsidies to the people in cash, but this can cause inflation and proper planning must be done for this issue. On the other hand, about 8 million people do not have insurance now, for which the parliament should have a plan. The statements illustrate the challenges Iran's government has internally. While it puts on a brave face abroad, the reality is more complex at home. https://www.jpost.com/middle-east/iranians-tire-of-government-waste-failed-foreign-policies-657366 [Were The Donald to have his rightful second term and continue his pressure on their current administration there could be enough disgust and discord in Iran to have brought the ruling mullahs down. It's not just President Trump and the MyPillow guy Mike Lindell who are facing the wrath of Twitter in recent days. Now, the social-media giant has suspended Focus on the Family, an influential Christian-based family organization. The supposed crime? Its "Daily Citizen" publication stated factual information regarding the biological sex of Rachel Levine, President Biden's assistant secretary for health at the Department of Health and Human Services. "As I've noted before, Big Tech titans are the new emperors of the twenty-first century, wielding an inordinate amount of power by silencing individuals and organizations that don't comport or cave to their political or social point of view," wrote Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family. "This past week, Twitter locked The Daily Citizen for an alleged rules violation, specifically that we had posted 'hateful' content. It's simply not true. We did no such thing," he continued. At issue was a Tweet pointing to a story about Dr. Rachel Levine, President Biden's controversial nominee for Assistant Secretary for Health at the Department of Health and Human Services. The tweet included the following sentence: "Dr. Levine is a transgender woman, that is, a man who believes he is a woman." It seems, according to Twitter, simply acknowledging biological fact is now "hateful." As we noted to Twitter in our appeal (we have since been denied), we were deeply puzzled as to why we're not permitted to simply acknowledge the definition of what transgender women are – those born male who believe they are a woman, regardless of whether they have had opposite-sex hormones or surgeries. The article itself had absolutely nothing to do with Dr. Levine's "trans" identification. It had to do with his fitness for the job based on his previous record. We've asked Twitter to explain what was wrong with our wording and even asked them how we might describe Dr. Levine to their liking. At this writing, we haven't heard back. Over the course of the last week, President Biden has been stressing the need for unity – but his actions since taking office are all about demanding uniformity. There appears to be no room for convictional disagreement. You will comply – or be silenced. The "Cancel Culture" is barreling down the track like a runaway train on a mountain pass, threatening to run over anyone in its path. Daly also provided a list of other individuals whose free-speech rights have been pummeled online recently. • Curt Schilling – had his insurance dropped by AIG; may not make Hall of Fame today because of statements supporting conservative causes • Brandon Eich – Mozilla CEO, ousted after it was discovered he'd privately given money in support of California's anti-gay marriage referendum in the past • Martina Navratilova – thrown off LGBT advocacy board and loses speaking engagements and documentary after arguing that transgender male athletes shouldn't be able to compete in women's sports • J.K. Rowling – prevented from getting last book published because of tweets making distinctions between the sexes • Ariel Pink dropped from record label for attending Trump rally, not to mention all of the people who have been fired from jobs for attending the January 6 rally, regardless of whether they even came near the Capitol • CrossFit founder Greg Glassman forced to sell company after making remarks critical of the rioting last year "It goes on and on. And we're only at the beginning of a coordinated effort to silence those of us with socially conservative convictions," Daly said. "Please be in prayer for us as we navigate this cultural maelstrom. In reality, this tension over free speech and religious liberty have existed from the earliest days of the country – but it's exacerbated and magnified in this post-Christian era." The Daily Citizen reported that there is some help coming from other family organizations: Allies of Focus on the Family are sending a letter to Twitter, declaring their support for the organization and the truth that "a person's biological sex cannot be changed." The effort, led by Family Policy Alliance (FPA), asks Twitter to reconsider its lockdown of The Daily Citizen for posting a tweet that defined a "transgender woman" as "a man who believes he is a woman." A petition spearheaded by FPA has also been initiated. It states: "You recently banned Focus on the Family's The Daily Citizen from your platform for stating a biological fact: A biological male is a male. "I stand with Focus on the Family. So, if you are going to ban them, are you going to ban millions of others like me who believe that biology is reality – and that freedom of speech matters in America? "If your censorship continues, Twitter will become a stagnant echo chamber." The Daily Citizen also reported: "In addition to the petition and the letter, earlier today FPA launched a Twitter campaign, #AreWeNext? They and supportive organizations and individuals are asking if they'll also be locked out of Twitter for stating the truth that transgender-identified individuals remain the genetic and biological sex they were born, regardless of drugs, hormones and surgeries." https://www.wnd.com/2021/01/twitter-suspends-major-christian-group-mind- boggling-grounds/ [Folks Twitter needs to be disbanded and bankrupted. When you are born you are either XX = female or XY = male. You can cut off anything you want to and you can take all the hormones in the world but it does not change your genetic make up which starts determining your gender and behavior while even in the womb. This is absolutely stupid and insane. All of these mega social nitwits need to be banned from the internet. Then you need to that the politicians that are pander to this group and round them up, tar and feather them and put them in the stocks for about 2 weeks. – rdb]

'Secret life': 21 men accuse Lincoln Project co-founder of sex abuse Including 14-year-old boy 'targeted by his deplorable and predatory behavior' By WND News Services Published January 31, 2021 at 7:04pm By Mary Margaret Olohan Daily Caller News Foundation

John Weaver (Video screenshot courtesy '60 Minutes')

The Lincoln Project has issued a statement denouncing co- founder John Weaver as a “predator, a liar, and an abuser.” “John Weaver led a secret life that was built on a foundation of deception at every level,” the Lincoln Project said in a Sunday statement. “He is a predator, a liar, and an abuser. We extend our deepest sympathies to those who were targeted by his deplorable and predatory behavior.” The Lincoln Project today released the following statement. pic.twitter.com/k9QkUsiFO5 — The Lincoln Project (@ProjectLincoln) January 31, 2021 Weaver apologized in early January for sending “inappropriate” messages to multiple men, according to Axios. He also announced that he is gay and said that he would not be returning to the Lincoln Project. “While I am taking full responsibility for the inappropriate messages and conversations, I want to state clearly that the other smears being leveled at me … are categorically false and outrageous,” Weaver said. Conservative writer Ryan Girdusky, a Lincoln Project critic, had alleged Jan. 9 that multiple young men had sent him screenshots of predatory messages from Weaver. He followed up this announcement with a story in The American Conservative describing Weaver’s alleged “predatory actions” and alleged grooming of young men. Several weeks later, the New York Times reported Sunday that Weaver sent sexually provocative and unsolicited messages to young men for years. The publication talked to 21 young men who said that the messages suggested that Weaver could help them get jobs in politics. One of these young men was 14 when Weaver messaged him, the publication reported. None of the men accused Weaver of unlawful conduct and the messages only led to one consensual sexual encounter, according to the Times. However, the men described feeling preyed upon by Weaver, an older and influential man with the potential to help them gain the job they wanted. Lincoln Project leaders have said they did not know about the allegations against Weaver until this month, though co- founder Steve Schmidt said that the organization’s leaders found from social media posts this summer that Weaver might have relationships with men, the Times reported. “There was no awareness or insinuations of any type of inappropriate behavior when we became aware of the chatter at the time,” Schmidt told the Times. He said that Weaver denied the allegations. “I am so disheartened and sad that I may have brought discomfort to anyone in what I thought at the time were mutually consensual discussions,” Weaver told the Times. “In living a deeply closeted life, I allowed my pain to cause pain for others. For that I am truly sorry to these men and everyone and for letting so many people down.” The Lincoln Project did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation. https://www.wnd.com/2021/01/secret-life-21-men-accuse-lincoln-project-co-founder-sex-abuse/ The Lincoln project is a vile never Trump group that has promoted lies and scurrilous reports about The Donald and multiple republicans that didn’t suit their perverse leftist leanings (they are all rinos). Most of there material was false and the entire group were infected with the same kind of sick behaviors as Weaver. The DC crowd is replete with reprehensible pedophilia and perversion and sex trafficking. If the Epstein information ever gets out it will sink most of DC. – rdb]

Police allowed to seize guns in home without a warrant 'A blatant attempt by law enforcement to create gaping holes in the 4th Amendment' By Bob Unruh Published January 31, 2021 at 3:08pm In an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, a civil-liberties legal group contends lower-court rulings in a Rhode Island case have set a dangerous precedent that allows police officers in some instances to enter the homes of citizens without a warrant and confiscate legal firearms. The Rutherford Institute, in a friend-of-the-court brief in the case of Caniglia v. Strom, asserts the lower courts wrongly invoked the "community caretaking" exemption in the Fourth Amendment. "This case represents a blatant attempt by law enforcement to create gaping holes in the Fourth Amendment force field that is supposed to protect homeowners and their homes against warrantless invasions by the government," said constitutional attorney John W. Whitehead, president of The Rutherford Institute. "What we do not need is yet another slippery slope argument that allows government officials to masquerade as community caretakers under the pretext of public health and safety in order to violate the Fourth Amendment at will." In 2105, Kim Caniglia of Cranston, Rhode Island, called police for a welfare check on her husband Edward, 68, after they had argued the night before and she hadn't heard from him the next morning. Rutherford said that during the argument, Edward retrieved his unloaded handgun, slammed it on a table dramatically and told Kim, 'Why don’t you just shoot me and get me out of my misery?" Police contacted Edward and he was mostly calm and told them he wouldn't commit suicide. He explained he made the comment out of frustration during the heat of an argument. Then, despite his response, police took him into custody and confined him in a psychiatric hospital. "While Edward was at the hospital, police entered his home and seized his handguns, despite having promised not to do so," the institute said. Edward Caniglia later sued the police for their warrantless entry and confiscation of his lawfully owned firearms, which he contends violated the Fourth Amendment's prohibition of unreasonable searches and seizures. However, the lower courts ruled in favor of the police, who claimed their seizure of the weapons was within the Fourth Amendment's "community caretaking" exception, which typically has been limited to searching vehicles during traffic stops. If the precedent stands, the institute argued in its brief to the Supreme Court, police would be allowed to "enter a home without a warrant and seize lawfully possessed firearms." MORE -https://www.wnd.com/2021/01/courts-allow-police- seize-guns-home-without-warrant/ [You need to watch this case because this is a blatant infringement on Second amendment rights and the unlawful seizure portion of the Bill of Rights. – rdb]

Commentaries: The Trump Comeback Begins: The Plan to Make Trump and America Great Again Wayne Allyn Root Posted: Jan 31, 2021 12:01 AM I am the author of the bestselling book "TRUMP RULES." My book identifies the top 10 rules that made former President one of the greatest winners in world history in business, branding, real estate, celebrity, television, publishing and politics. Trump is the only person in world history to reach the pinnacle of all of those fields. And the only person to become both a billionaire and president of the United States. It's not a bad resume. Many critics think Trump's winning streak ended with a presidential loss. I disagree. I know the man. I understand the man. I know what comes next. It may be Trump's greatest chapter yet. Simply because Trump is relentless. He may be the most relentless human in world history. The secret to Trump's success is "the art of the comeback." Every time he is given up for dead, he makes the biggest comeback yet. He never gives up or gives in. He finds a way to turn lemons into lemonade. You can't beat someone like that. You can't bet against someone like that. As I always say, NBAT: Never Bet Against Trump. Before I get to the details of the comeback, let's define "winning." Trump's critics think he just lost and, therefore, he's no longer a winner. Not true. Back in 2016, Trump won the biggest upset in political history. This time around, he added 11 million new votes. His 74 million votes were the most votes for any incumbent president in America's history. Trump also received more votes than any Republican in history. Sorry, Trump haters, but that's called "winning" at superhuman levels. Nonetheless, Trump lost and Joe Biden won. Democrats, RINOS (Republicans in Name Only) and the "fake news" media all believe Trump is finished. So, now it's time for the greatest comeback in history -- for Trump and America. Here's my game plan for how Trump can make Trump and America great again. First, Trump must become the kingmaker of the GOP. The Trump Army is 74 million strong. The Republican Party belongs to Trump. He should remake the party in his image. In some ways, his defeat was empowering. As president, Trump couldn't get rid of RINOS and never-Trumpers, because he needed their votes. But from the outside, he can remake the party, elect allies and end the careers of the GOP traitors who stabbed him in the back. Are you listening, Rep. Liz Cheney? Trump should recruit, endorse and campaign for Trump Republicans in each GOP primary where they're running against RINOS, never-Trumpers and backstabbers. Seventy-four million Trump voters will vote for his chosen candidates in GOP primaries. By 2022, the GOP will be 100% remade in Trump's image. Secondly, Trump should spend the next four years fixing voter fraud at the state level. Trump should recruit his billionaire buddies to put up hundreds of millions to attack this problem. Trump's goal should be to reform election law in just the handful of states that cost him the election: Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Arizona. If Trump spends his time, money and focus on reforming election laws in those six states, the GOP will be back in business in 2022 and 2024. Thirdly, Trump needs to raise billions from his billionaire backers to build TMN: Trump Media Network. That should include a national cable TV network; a national talk radio network; a new version of Drudge Report (called Trump Report); and conservative versions of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Conservatives will never again have to depend on the mainstream media or Silicon Valley to broadcast their news and opinions. Only Trump has the money, brand and fundraising ability to change the media and social media landscape like this. And think of the amazing bonus: Not only will 74 million Trump voters have permanent places to communicate but if we all move away from mainstream media and social media, they will collapse. Trump will cripple his enemies and put many of them out of business. Lastly, here's one more idea: Trump, run for Congress in 2022. Pick any GOP-friendly district in Florida, where you're loved, primarily one run by a RINO who stabbed you in the back. You'll win the primary by a landslide. Since it's a GOP district, you're guaranteed victory in the general election. Once in Congress, after the GOP has regained control in the midterms and most of the candidates are loyal to you, you'll be elected speaker of the House. From that platform, you can lead the impeachment of President Biden. Let the Trump comeback begin. Seventy-four million of us can't wait. https://townhall.com/columnists/wayneallynroot/2021/01/31/the-trump-comeback-begins-the-plan-to-make-trump-and-america-great-again- n2583947

A Different Type of Secession Is Already Happening in the USA Jeff Crouere Posted: Jan 31, 2021 12:01 AM Lately, there has been so much frustration with the last election and the direction of our country that some Trump supporters have been talking about “secession.” Many conservatives and libertarians are asking if it makes sense for certain states to leave the union the way South Carolina left in 1860, after the election of Abraham Lincoln as president of the United States. Whether it makes “sense” or not, we can be assured that it will not happen. Although the South Carolina state legislature voted in November of 1860 to initiate the process of secession, no state legislature would do that today. This is because most modern state legislatures, even conservative ones, do not have many members who are angry enough at the federal government to support seceding from it. Never forget that many individual state legislators are professional politicians. They may disagree with some of the policies that flow from Washington D.C., but they are not angry enough to vote for secession, and that is what is required to secede, anger. While an official secession will not happen, there will be a different type. In fact, it has already started in our country. Instead of state legislatures, dominated by urban dwellers, voting for secession, Americans who live in rural and some suburban areas are executing a secession of their own. They are disassociating themselves from the lifestyles, cultural mores, laws, and self-inflicted wounds exhibited in our large cities. Of course, rural Americans are already living in areas removed from large cities, but geography is only one of the many differences. An even more striking distinction involves political ideology and attitudes on an array of issues like criminal justice. Citizens living outside of ultra-progressive urban areas do not accept what is going on in large cities. Surely, the thinking is, “I am not one of them. They are different from me. We do not agree on basic things, like what laws should govern human conduct.” This mental disassociation did not exist in previous times of crisis in our country. There was much more national unity in December of 1941 or even September of 2001. At that time, rural Americans and city dwellers still had many shared values and followed the same laws. Clearly, the similarity in culture and politics between rural and urban Americans is dying, and the pace of its death march is quickening. This same type of disassociation is also felt by many Americans living in suburban areas. They recognize their way of life is incompatible with that exhibited in large cities. This results in suburban dwellers venturing into cities less often. Once there, they feel unsafe and unwelcome. According to the FBI, crime rates in our urban areas are significantly higher than in suburban and rural areas. More crime is not the only difference Americans notice in large cities. There are also different laws regarding decency, civility, and cleanliness. Unfortunately, manners and traditional customs are rarely, if ever, practiced. Many horrific things can happen to you in a large city without warning. You can be struck from behind in a “Knockout Attack” or wounded by a stray bullet. You can be surrounded by violent demonstrators who scream at you and call you evil because of your wealth, race, religious views, or political beliefs. This is not a place that feels comfortable or feels like home. Over the past few decades, millions of Americans who support traditional American values, and even some who value safety, have already left our large cities. They are disgusted with the political corruption, high taxes, racial politics, homelessness and, over the past year, the excessive Covid-19 lockdown orders. People leaving are also those who value their second amendment rights. They do not want to be charged with a crime if they have to defend their home. Who can forget what happened to Mark and Patricia McCloskey in St. Louis? On June 28, 2020, their neighborhood was overrun by protesters and a mob was descending on the McCloskey’s home. The couple waved firearms in front of their home to encourage the protesters to leave. No gun was ever fired at any of the trespassers. Incredibly, Mr. and Mrs. McCloskey were charged with the unlawful use of a weapon even though they feared for their lives. If convicted, they could face up to four years in prison and a fine of $10,000. As this trend continues and cities like St. Louis, Detroit, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Washington D.C., and New York City decline even more, these areas will simultaneously become more similar. They already have much in common politically. Future cooperation will likely continue on issues such as drug legalization, the treatment of homelessness, gun control, permissive law enforcement, and providing a sanctuary and support for illegal aliens. With so much commonality, these cities will forge even closer bonds in the days ahead. With unworkable policies and massive bureaucracies, these cities will need greater and greater subsidies from productive, tax-paying citizens living in rural and suburban America. Urban areas have been failing financially for many years, but as the policies become more progressive, the costs are escalating even higher. In large cities, politicians spend vast sums of money on enormous municipal government systems which include inefficient departments featuring payrolls that are too large and too expensive. Other characteristics include broken infrastructure, rampant homelessness, and an overly generous municipal pension system. How much longer will productive taxpayers living in rural and suburban communities agree to subsidize large cities? Sooner or later, these citizens will say “Enough is enough, we want out!” They will want the urban centers to form their own “United Cities of America” with their own laws and lifestyles. Simultaneously, Americans living in non-urban areas will want to forge closer bonds of their own as similarities are recognized even more. The secession of 1860 will not happen again, but a different kind is already taking place. https://townhall.com/columnists/jeffcrouere/2021/01/31/a-different-type-of-secession-is-already-happening-in-the-usa-n2583973

China Doesn't Have to Lift a Finger to Push Biden Around by Gordon G. Chang January 31, 2021 at 5:00 am The Biden administration has just endorsed one of China's most vicious attack lines against the United States. The new administration's actions look as if they are setting a pattern for its responses to Beijing on the disease and other matters. On January 26, Biden signed his executive order titled "Memorandum Condemning and Combating Racism, Xenophobia, and Intolerance Against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States." The order states that during the coronavirus pandemic "inflammatory and xenophobic rhetoric has put Asian American and Pacific Islander persons, families, communities, and businesses at risk." There is nothing wrong with protecting minorities from racism, but racism is not the problem. "Political correctness presages policy incorrectness," writes the Claremont Institute's Ben Weingarten on the Newsweek site, commenting on Biden's executive order. "And when it comes to matters of life and limb, political correctness can kill." Weingarten is correct. "Xenophobia" has been a constant Biden theme. On January 31 of last year, President Trump announced the "travel ban," prohibitions and restrictions on arrivals from China. Within moments of the announcement, Biden went on the attack. "This is no time for Donald Trump's record of hysterical xenophobia and fear mongering to lead the way instead of science," he said. Biden's campaign said the attack was not in response to the travel ban, yet on the following day the candidate expressed the same thoughts in a tweet: "We need to lead the way with science—not Donald Trump's record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering." There was nothing "xenophobic" about Trump's travel ban. It was imposed on arrivals from the country where the disease first appeared. The ban, therefore, saved lives, and it would have saved even more if it had been stricter, announced sooner, and had been more rigorously enforced. Biden was against the China travel ban, and if he had been president then, the disease would almost certainly have spread faster in America. He was, during the campaign, against all such travel prohibitions. Then, Biden's criticisms of the travel ban aligned perfectly with Beijing's attacks on Trump—and on the United States. Now, Biden is supporting another Chinese propaganda campaign. "The Federal Government must recognize that it has played a role in furthering these xenophobic sentiments through the actions of political leaders, including references to the COVID-19 pandemic by the geographic location of its origin," declares the January 26 executive order. The order is expected to result in a ban, across the federal government, of the use of "China virus," "Wuhan flu," and variants. President Trump emphasized "China virus" early last year, in response to Beijing's statements. On March 12, the Chinese foreign ministry launched disinformation attacks, accusing the U.S. of being the origin of the coronavirus disease and hiding its source. An official foreign ministry tweet made explicit the claim that official Chinese sources had been hinting for more than a month: The United States was ground zero for COVID-19. Beijing has not given up on this malicious line of attack. This month, Beijing, with absolutely no evidence, has been pointing to Fort Detrick in Maryland as the source of the disease. The Chinese regime, which to this day uses geographical names for strains of virus, has been trying to ban any identification of China with the pandemic. Biden, with his executive order, is doing Beijing's work as Chinese leaders try to deflect blame. "The Chinese Communist Party would love to see itself delinked from the coronavirus pandemic that originated on its shores, that it sought to cover up, that it helped spread around the world, and that it has cynically sought to exploit at every turn," writes Weingarten. "So Beijing must have been cheering when it got word of a gift, in this regard, from President Joe Biden." Moreover, Biden, within hours of taking the oath, rejoined the World Health Organization (WHO), something else Beijing wanted because, as a practical matter, it controls the political leadership of that body. This decision was especially hideous because WHO was complicit in China's deliberate spread of the disease. WHO disseminated Beijing's position that the coronavirus was not readily contagious even though the organization's senior doctors knew it was highly transmissible. Moreover, WHO championed the Chinese campaign against travel bans. Americans died because of these and other indefensible actions on the part of WHO, and now Biden will go back to legitimizing and supporting that organization. China's challenge to America is comprehensive, on every front. So far, Biden has taken steps that certainly encourage Beijing. His rejoining the Paris Agreement, his cancellation of the Keystone XL Pipeline, and his repeal of the ban on Chinese equipment in the American electrical grid, among others, favor, directly or indirectly, Beijing. Also of great concern is the failure of Commerce Secretary nominee Gina Raimondo to confirm that Huawei Technologies will remain on the department's Entity List. Analysts say Beijing is testing Biden. Yes, but so far the Chinese do not need to lift a finger. The new president is giving them what they want, and they are not even having to ask. Gordon G. ARUTZ SHEVA Gantz: There are homes in Lebanon that have guest rooms and missile rooms Defense Minister gives first-ever interview by Israeli minister to Alghad TV which broadcasts from Cairo. Arutz Sheva Staff , Jan 31 , 2021 11:20 PM Defense Minister Benny Gantz was interviewed on Sunday by Arabic Alghad TV, which broadcasts from Cairo, in a first-ever interview by an Israeli minister and the first in an unprecedented series of interviews to be broadcast with key Israeli figures. Journalist Nazir Majli spoke with the Defense Minister last week in his office at the Tel Aviv Ministry of Defense about contending with Iran, the new American administration, the challenges and opportunities in the region as well as the upcoming elections. On Iran, Gantz said, "Israel has a clear objective: that Iran not be nuclear. It is not just an Israeli interest. It is first and foremost a global and regional interest. The IDF and Israel’s defense establishment are holding onto the option of taking action against Iran's nuclear project if that is what has to be done. I hope it doesn’t come to that." "A nuclear Iran would lead to a nuclear arms race throughout the Middle East. The regime is fundamentalist and radical and ultimately wants to obtain nuclear capability not just to have it, but primarily for the leverage it would give them in nuclear deterrence. I want the public in Iran to understand me: I don’t have anything against them. Iranian citizens deserve a normal life like every other human being. But the regime’s support of terrorism, of Hezbollah, of the Houthis demands action," he added. Responding to a question on possible Iranian civil nuclear generation, Gantz said, "If you wanted to develop nuclear capability for medical purposes, would you have to hide it underground? Would you need to deny access to inspectors? We know the Iranians are trying to develop nuclear weapons and we will not allow that to happen. " On possible future regional warfare, he said, "Unfortunately, any future war in our region would involve many civilians; it wouldn’t be just a military-to-military confrontation. Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas and the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip aim their missiles towards populated areas in Israel – threatening Arab and Jewish communities alike. Eventually, we will have to attack missiles that are being stored within civilian populations. This is verified intelligence, and we saw the repercussions of such reckless practice by Hezbollah in the port of Beirut." Gantz boasted about Israel's intelligence capabilities, saying, "We continue to have superior intelligence throughout the Middle East and, in certain respects, throughout the world. We do not use it for any purpose other than ensuring Israel's security. When I tell you, I know there are homes in Lebanon that have guest rooms and missile rooms it’s not just a slogan. It’s the reality on the ground." Regarding the Biden Administration’s policy vis-à-vis Israel, the Defense Minister expressed optimism that the US- Israel relationship will continue to be very good. Myanmar leader detained by military Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling party detained amid tensions between the civilian government and the military. Ben Ariel , Feb 01 , 2021 2:01 AM Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling party were detained in an early morning raid, the spokesman for the governing National League for Democracy said on Monday (local time), according to Reuters. The move came after days of escalating tension between the civilian government and the powerful military that stirred fears of a coup in the aftermath of an election the army says was fraudulent. Spokesman Myo Nyunt told Reuters that Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other leaders had been “taken” in the early hours of the morning. “I want to tell our people not to respond rashly and I want them to act according to the law,” he said, adding he also expected to be detained. A military spokesman did not answer phone calls seeking comment. Following Suu Kyi’s arrest, it was reported that Myanmar state TV had stopped its broadcasts. The station said in a post on Facebook it is having "technical errors" and is currently unable to broadcast. Suu Kyi has come under criticism in recent years for her country's persecution of the Rohingya Muslim minority. In 2017, the US withdrew its military assistance to Myanmar, dropped Myanmar from the US visa waiver program, and considered imposing sanctions on the country. In 2018, the US Holocaust Memorial and Museum rescinded a human rights award it gave to Suu Kyi because of her failure to oppose the ethnic cleansing and possible genocide of Myanmar’s Rohingya minority. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/295970 [HUMMMMM? – rdb]

Elad Benari , Feb 01 , 2021 6:02 AM Former White House senior adviser Jared Kushner and his deputy, Avi Berkowitz, were nominated on Sunday for the Nobel Peace Prize for their role in negotiating the normalization deals between Israel and Arab countries known as the “Abraham Accords”, Reuters reports. The two were nominated by attorney Alan Dershowitz, who was eligible to do so in his capacity as a professor emeritus of Harvard Law School. Kushner, who is former US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, and Berkowitz, who served as Trump’s Middle East envoy, were key figures in negotiating deals between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco. Kushner said in a statement quoted by Reuters he was honored to be nominated for the prize, which will be awarded in October. In November, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize due to the peace deals between Israel and Arab states. The nomination was submitted by Lord David Trimble, a former North Irish lawmaker who was instrumental in the negotiations which led to the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, which effectively ended the conflict between Protestants and Catholics in North Ireland. Trump himself has also been nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in promoting peace in the Middle East. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/295976 To be removed from this News list, Please click here and put "Unsubscribe" in the subject line.                         LEV U’NESHAMA (HEART AND SOUL) – TZFAT, ISRAEL ANNUAL TWO FOR ONE PURIM MITZVAH Purim: February 26, 2021
