INTRODUCTION The hosting of these Games was a real highlight not only for Transplant Sports, but also for the organ donation & transplantation fraternity in Port Elizabeth and .

In his welcome letter, the National Chairman of SATSA expressed his wish that each athlete would enjoy these Games and the competition of the various events but above all, that athletes, family, friends, health professionals and others will again experience the camaraderie and friendship as well as the opportunity to express deep appreciation to all donors and donor families.

According to feedback from participants and supporters, Port Elizabeth proved to be a Sports and Tourist destination that would ensure the possible hosting of future National Transplant Games.

ECTSA thanks the South African Transplant Sports Association (SATSA) for the trust in and support to the Region in order to ensure the success of the Games especially Stan Henkeman, National Chairperson, Hermann Steyn, Executive Secretary and Dick Kruger, National Treasurer.

ROLE PLAYERS WHO ENSURED THE SUCCESS OF THE GAMES

EASTERN CAPE DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS, RECREATION, ATS & CULTURE: ECTSA thanks this Department, and especially Ms Deidre Sedras, General Manager Sport and Recreation, for her trust in this project and the Department’s approval to ECTSA to host the Games.

EASTERN CAPE SPORTS CONFEDERATION (ECSC): Mr Mkhululi Magada, President of ECSC, supported this project with enthusiasm from the onset. ECTSA thanks ECSC for the financial contribution towards the development and training of the Eastern Cape athletes for their participation in the Games.

NELSON MANDELA BAY MUNICIPALITY (NMBM): Even before an official request was submitted for permission to host the Games in Port Elizabeth, the Executive Major, Mr Athol Trollip indicated his enthusiasm towards this project. ECTSA thanks the following persons for their commitment and active support to realise various goals and outcomes:

NELSON MANDELA UNIVERSITY: From the first contact made on 15th December 2017 and at the first meeting on 16th January 2018, the Faculty of Health Sciences was committed to be a major role player in the Games project. ECTSA thanks Prof Dalena van Rooyen, Deputy Dean, and Mrs Andrea Waters, Faculty Project Manager, for “leading from the front” in coordinating all Departments of the Faculty. Our thanks also to Prof Pepeta for his support and commitment to this project.

The University was involved in the following areas: - Supplying Emergency Medical Assistance at sports venues; - Making available vehicles for people transportation to all venues and the airport; - Organising students to act as volunteers at the different sports events; - Sports Managers arranged officials and support at sports events and the Chair South Campus and Athletics Stadium Manager who ensured the smooth running of the Athletics event; - Play a major role in the supply of refreshments and support at the Organ Donation and Transplantation Awareness Walk; - Making available venues for sports events namely squash, table tennis, tennis and athletics as well as the Sports Centre for the gala dinner;

ECTSA is looking forward to a long term relationship with the Faculty of Health Sciences relating to the development of transplanted athletes in the EC Region.

ACCOMMODATION: PROTEA MARINE HOTEL BY MARRIOT Athletes and supporters were accommodated in the Protea Marine Hotel on Marine Drive. This was not just affordable and of high quality but was centrally situated between the different sports venues. We thank the personnel of the hotel for their friendly, accommodative and supporting service. Due to the variety of rooms available single persons as well as families could be accommodated.

Breakfast was included in the accommodation rate while lunch was provided by means of lunch- boxes.

REGISTRATION PROCESS The Registration area was on the first floor via stairs from Hotel Reception. This spacious area allowed for seating comfort, placement of banners, notice board, storeroom facility and Registration counter.

Thanks to all who was involved from manning the desk to the carrying of supplies.

Shirts for athletes: ECTSA thanks the following organisations for making it possible to “dress up” our athletes for the Games: - Renal Care Society of South Africa (RCSSA) for their contribution towards the Games shirts; - Christo Slabbert from Remax Independent Properties Port Elizabeth for the well- designed T-shirts that gave splendour to the Organ Donation and Transplantation Awareness Walk;

CATERING, MEALS AND DRINKS Lunch packs: Fat Cats Catering ensured prompt daily delivery of lunch packs with a variety of items such as sandwiches, fruit juice, fruit and an energy bar. These were distributed from the Registration area using meal tickets. Extra lunch packs were ordered for the Athletic Officials as well as the Volunteers.

Water & energy drinks: Coca Cola sponsored the Awareness Walk and the Games with 10 cases of Bonaqua water (240 bottles), 3 cases of Powerade Concentrate and 1000 cups. Extra water had to be purchases from Coca Cola, namely 20 cases (480 bottles). Thanks to Gail Halforty of Nelson Mandela University for the role she played in ensuring this sponsorship and with the assistance of Dezi Rosenblatt, distributed the supplies at the Awareness Walk and Athletic Stadium.

WELCOME FUNCTION & SATSA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Welcome function set the scene for old friends to meet again and new members to be introduced. We thank Mr Athol Trollip, Executive Mayor Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for being our guest speaker and for sponsoring the event.

This event was held in the Fish Eagle Conference Room of the Protea Marine Hotel.

The SATSA AGM took place after the Welcome Function and was very well attended. ECTSA congratulates the new incoming Management Committee and whish them a fruitful Term of Office.

GALA DINNER The gala dinner Saturday evening is always the highlight of the National Transplant Games. Following two days of intense competition and effort to reach the set qualifying standards for each sports item, the athletes, their family members, supporters and sponsors celebrated not only their achievements but also their gratitude towards their donors who made it all possible. All athletes received a participation medal.

Our sincere thanks go to the Nelson Mandela University who approved the using of the Sports Centre and to Prof Louise Stroud, Director Schools of Behavioural and Lifestyle Sciences who addressed the audience and inspired especially the athletes to keep on embracing hope, faith and endurances. We were also honoured with the presence of Prof Pepeta, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences who participated with Prof Stroud in the medal ceremony. ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION AWARENESS EVENTS

GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE WALK: An Organ Donation and Transplantation Awareness Walk took place on Friday afternoon in front of the Protea Marine Hotel. This Walk included athletes, supporters, sponsors, Transplant Awareness Associations patients on dialysis as well as members of the public. This was one of the largest and most inclusive Walks to take place during a National Transplant Games event.

Thanks to all the Organisations and hospitals who took part, Coca Cola for supplying drinks and Nelson Mandela University, Faculty of Health Sciences who were on site with health and dietary information.

ORGAN DONOR AND TRANSPLANTATION STEPS CHALLENGE 2018: Awareness to promote Organ Donation and Transplantation was heighted during the 90 days building up to the Games through a Step Challenge. Thanks to all the Steppers in the 26 teams participating and congratulations to the winners.

DONOR RECOGNITION: A standard theme of the Games is to recognise the donors who made it possible so that transplanted athletes can compete and live life to the fullest. Recognition of donors was included during the opening ceremony at the athletics track. Thanks to Lulu Shogale for her inspirational message to spectators at the event.

TRANSPORTATION It was heart-warming to experience the open hearts and hands of different Organisations who offered to assist with the transportation of athletes and supporters between the Protea Marine Hotel and the airport as well as to the different sports and social venues: - Nelson Mandela University Faculty of Health Sciences provided a 22 as well as 9 seater busses and drivers; - Tavcor VW provided 2 kombis and drivers; - Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality provided a bus and driver for the bigger groups on Friday.

Medical Incident Report: - Treated on site: Only two athletes were treated by the Emergency Medical personnel at the Athletics Track: • Incident 1: Right calf injury – referred to hospital • Incident 2: Faint on track – fully recovered on site - Hospital referrals: Right calf injury was taken by friends to Netcare Greenacres hospital Emergency Department. Received pain medication and a supporting boot with the instructions to have follow-up scan assessment at a hospital in Cape Town.

SAFETY AND SECURITY The ROC met with A/O Mandy Dicker Crime Prevention (on behalf of Col. Houwland) at the Humewood Police Station on 17th April relating to Safety and Security issues for the Games. The following was finalised: - SATSA did not need to complete a Section 6 (3) Application – Event Risk Categorisation as the number of persons involved are less than 2000; - A/O Dicker forwarded a Security leaflet to the LOC in order to prepare information to all athletes and supporters involved regarding security aspects during the Games; - A list of contact numbers of the Police and Emergency Services in Zone 3 was made available to ensure communication between the LOC and these services during the time of the Games.

Nelson Mandela University: Thanks to Derek Huebsch who arranged extra Security at sports venues and the Sports Centre on Saturday evening during the Gala Dinner.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality: Ms Isaacs of NMBM Tourism was of great assistance not only with marketing the event in the city but also the supplying of tourist information that was part of the items distributed via the Goodie Bags all registered persons received.

Television interviews: Excellent coverage was given to the Games on Sports Federations TV (4th July) in an interview with the National Chairperson, Stan Henkeman and Hermann Steyn, Executive Secretary.

Radio interviews: Radio Sonder Grense (RSG) broadcasted an interview with Stan Henkeman and Heilie Uys on 20th July and will follow this up with a longer programme that is scheduled for 16th August. Thanks to Mariska Spoormaker for the hours she spent with our athletes to capture the “true” story. The event was also mentioned in various sports reports by Neil Bissiker on Algoa FM.

Social Media: Before, during and after the Games news, activities and photos were shared on Facebook and Twitter and all other related social media. Thanks to the SATSA members and friends who participated so actively in promoting the Games through this channel of communication.

VOLUNTEERS: NELSON MANDELA UNIVERSITY (NMU) STUDENTS Through the NMU Faculty of Health Sciences, students were identified to assist during the sports events of the road race, cycling and athletics. This participation was seen as part of their practical experience relating to their different academic programmes. Thanks to Dezi Rosenblatt and Gail Halforty for their assistance (Human Movement Science / Biokinetics)

Safety: No road closures necessary. Emergency vehicle accompanied the cyclists in the front and an ambulance followed at the rear. Hydration station: Was manned by LOC member and 2 NMU students at turning point

ROAD RACE 5KM - FRIDAY 13th JULY – 08:00 – 09:00 Venue: Summerstrand (in front of hotel) to Kings Beach and back on the promenade. Distance: 5km race Participants: 10 runners – 6 men & 4 ladies Officials: Eastern Province Athletics – coordinator Johann van Greunen & Godfrey Goliath – Total 4 Marshals: NMU students assisted the officials as marshals along the route Medical: NMU Emergency vehicle and ambulance Safety: NMU students lined the route as marshals. They were in cell phone contact with the emergency personnel. No road closures were necessary because athletes stayed on the promenade. Hydration station: Manned by NMU students (x2) at Kings Beach point.

Opening: The Official Opening took place at 10:30 with Nombuyiselo Skafu reading the Athletes Pledge and Lulu Shogale giving a tribute to organ Stands: To promote organ donation & transplantation. Participants were Love Life Gift Live, Organ Donor Foundation & Sunflower Fund. The Departments of the Faculty of Health Sciences, NMU, had information and students available regarding academic programmes offered at the Faculty.

WORD OF THANKS Linking onto the word of thanks already expressed in this report, SATSA & ECTSA would like to thank each and every participant and supporter who endured sunshine and rain but kept on radiating the spirit of “Celebrating New Life to the Fullest through Sport”

We thank God for giving us the opportunity to once again be thankful for another such an opportunity and also to re-affirm friendships and camaraderie in our Transplant Sports Family.

We certainly look forward to a wonderfully successful World Transplant Games in 2019 but also to be able to build onto the base of participation that we had with the National Transplant Games in 2018.
