Visits to Tuonela Ne of the Many Mythologies Which Have Had an In
ne of the many mythologies which have had an in fluence on Tolkien's work was the Kalevala, the 22000- line poem recounting the adventures of a group of Fin nish heroes. It has many characteristics peculiar to itself and is quite different from, for example, Greek or Germanic mythology. It would take too long to dis cuss this difference, but the prominent role of women (particularly mothers) throughout the book may be no ted, as well as the fact that the heroes and the style are 'low-brow', as Tolkien described them, as opposed to the 'high-brow' heroes common in other mytholog- les visits to Tuonela (Hades) are fairly frequent; and magic and shape-change- ing play a large part in the epic. Another notable feature which the Kaleva la shares with QS is that it is a collection of separate, but interrelated, tales of heroes, with the central theme of war against Pohjola, the dreary North, running through the whole epic, and individual themes in the separate tales. However, it must be appreciated that QS, despite the many influences clearly traceable behind it, is, as Carpenter reminds us, essentially origin al; influences are subtle, and often similar incidents may occur in both books, but be employed in different circumstances, or be used in QS simply as a ba sis for a tale which Tolkien would elaborate on and change. Ibis is notice able even in the tale of Turin (based on the tale of Kullervo), in which the Finnish influence is strongest. I will give a brief synopsis of the Kullervo tale, to show that although Tolkien used the story, he varied it, added to it, changed its style (which cannot really be appreciated without reading the or iginal ), and moulded it to his own use. -
To Mark the 150Th Anniversary of the Birth of Matisse and the Upcoming
To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Matisse and the upcoming exhibition of his work at the Pompidou Centre in Paris in 2020, this art documentary invites us to retrace the voyages Matisse made that influenced his art, especially his last trip to Polynesia in 1930, which took him to the threshold of contemporary art with the invention of his gouache-painted cut-outs. In 1930, at the age of 60, Matisse feels the call of the sea, the lure of elsewhere, one last time. He decides to embark on the longest possible journey: to the antipodes, to see Polynesia. The voyage to Tahiti takes several weeks, giving him time to look back on the distance he has travelled in his lifetime. He reflects on the many journeys that he, a man of the North searching for bright light and colours, has continually made throughout his life and career as a painter: to Corsica, Collioure and Nice, where he finally settled in 1917, but also to Algeria, Morocco and the United States. Each time, these trips have been a stepping stone to something else. His Corsican experience led him to Fauvism, his sojourn in Morocco to modern painting; Polynesia will permeate the last 25 years of his creative life and take him to the threshold of contemporary art. This lifelong artistic quest for other lights, colours and shapes has also, above all, been a search for himself that has driven him tirelessly and passionately to pursue the great journey of his life. Nordic Journal of African Studies 1(2): 82–93 (1992) The Role of the Kalevala in Finnish Culture and Politics URPO VENTO Finnish Literature Society, Finland The question has frequently been asked: would Finland exist as a nation state without Lönnrot's Kalevala? There is no need to answer this, but perhaps we may assume that sooner or later someone would have written the books which would have formed the necessary building material for the national identity of the Finns. During the mid 1980s, when the 150th anniversary of the Kalevala was being celebrated in Finland, several international seminars were held and thousands of pages of research and articles were published. At that time some studies appeared in which the birth of the nation state was examined from a pan-European perspective. SMALL NATION STATES "The nation state - an independent political unit whose people share a common language and believe they have a common cultural heritage - is essentially a nineteenth-century invention, based on eighteenth-century philosophy, and which became a reality for the most part in either the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The circumstances in which this process took place were for the most part marked by the decline of great empires whose centralised sources of power and antiquated methods of administrations prevented an effective response to economic and social change, and better education, with all the aspirations for freedom of thought and political action that accompany such changes." Thus said Professor Michael Branch (University of London) at a conference on the literatures of the Uralic peoples held in Finland in the summer of 1991. -

Framing ‘the Other’. A critical review of Vietnam war movies and their representation of Asians and Vietnamese.* John Kleinen W e W ere Soldiers (2002), depicting the first major clash between regular North-Vietnamese troops and U.S. troops at Ia Drang in Southern Vietnam over three days in November 1965, is the Vietnam War version of Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line. Director, writer and producer, Randall Wallace, shows the viewer both American family values and dying soldiers. The movie is based on the book W e were soldiers once ... and young by the U.S. commander in the battle, retired Lieutenant General Harold G. Moore (a John Wayne- like performance by Mel Gibson).1 In the film, the U.S. troops have little idea of what they face, are overrun and suffer heavy casualties. The American GIs are seen fighting for their comrades, not their fatherland. This narrow patriotism is accompanied by a new theme: the respect for the victims ‘on the other side’. For the first time in the Hollywood tradition, we see fading shots of dying ‘VC’ and of their widows reading loved ones’ diaries. This is not because the filmmaker was emphasizing ‘love’ or ‘peace’ instead of ‘war’, but more importantly, Wallace seems to say, that war is noble. Ironically, the popular Vietnamese actor, Don Duong, who plays the communist commander Nguyen Huu An who led the Vietnamese People’s Army to victory, has been criticized at home for tarnishing the image of Vietnamese soldiers. Don Duong has appeared in several foreign films and numerous Vietnamese-made movies about the War. -

They believe that this universe will be harmonious when humans can maintain good relations with God, fellow human beings, and the universe in a balanced way. This study aims at Keywords: investigating the Balinese calendar system from its underlying-philosophical Saka calendar; perspective as well as utilized-daily practices among the Hindu Balinese life. Pawukon calendar; The theory used to undertake this study is semiotics by providing a sustained Balinese calendar system; and rigorous relation between the signifier (sign) and signified (meaning). By applying a descriptive qualitative research, the data was collected through literature study of the Balinese calendar library and in-depth interviews with some stakeholders of the Balinese customary community, such as priests, and Balinese calendar practitioners and observers including the writer’s direct practices. The data that has been classified is analyzed by a qualitative descriptive method with an inductive-methodological paradigm which is setting up the discussion from particular principles to the general in order to obtain a conclusion. -

The interview took place in Seattle, WA, and was conducted by Martha Kingsbury for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. His added comments with his initials are in brackets--Ed.] MARTHA KINGSBURY: George, why don't we start by talking about a lot of biographical matters. I'd like to know about your personal background, your family, your growing up in Seattle and Japan also, education. GEORGE TSUTAKAWA: Uh huh. Well, let's see now. My father was a merchant who came to Seattle in 1905, and he started a small business and eventually he gets involved in fairly large company exporting and importing American goods and Japanese goods. He, as I recall, had business in Japanese food, clothing, art goods, and all sorts of things from Japan, and then in turn he was sending lumber from the Northwest to Japan. He also dealt in scrap metal and just anything. MARTHA KINGSBURY: That he sent to Japan? GEORGE TSUTAKAWA: Yeah, he sent to Japan.
