The lake is two kilometres wide and six kilometres in length. It lies in the centre of the Triglav national park and occupies a dramatic position surrounded by a spectacular mountain ridge. We recommend you take a walk around the lake or a boat ride. Overnight apartment in Bohinj Lake. meals: NIL DAY 2 Moderate hike to Planika hut (6-8hrs) Your main luggage will be transferred to Bovec so you will need to repack your hiking gear into a rucksack this morning. The walk begins by following the Mostnica stream to reach the Mostnica Gorge, where you will pass through a series of limestone canyons. There are some excellent views to the cascades and rapids before the trail opens out to the Voje Valley. This section of the walk passes by meadows and small settlements and then through a beautiful forest to reach the Grintovica alpine meadow at around 1170m. As you ascend the views open out to the surrounding craggy peaks. You should take a break at Vodnikov hut where lunch can be purchased, before continuing along the flanks of Vernar peak (2225m). A further walk of just under two hours you will bring you to your overnight accommodation at Planika hut. Overnight mountain hut. meals: B DAY 3 Optional Mt Triglav ascent. Triglav Lakes Valley walk (6hrs hike) This morning (early) you have the option (highly recommended) to ascend Mt Triglav which takes around 2-3 hours return. It is a steep cliff path that has steel ropes fixed along the ridge line with steps to the top. The path is very rocky with a lot of scree. Traversing the ridgeline allows for magnificent views over the area weather permitting. If you would like to take this option it must be booked and paid locally and the guide will meet you in the morning at Planika Hut. The main section of the walk then continues to the Triglav lakes valley hut where you spend the night. The trail has some steep sections traversing narrow ledges where a handrail has been installed. As you continue you will cross the Dolic saddle (2164m), before reaching the windswept Hribarice plateau. Soon after you will enter the Triglav Lakes Valley which was formed along a geological fault. The vegetation of green meadows and scattered trees is in stark contrast to the limestone crags above. Overnight mountain hut. *the main walk today is 6hrs, and there is the optional Via Ferrate guided climbing/hike for 2-3 hours as detailed above. meals: B © World Expeditions Travel Group - Kate Baker 10/30/2019 1:42:29 PM Page 2 walking in the julian alps DAY 4 Hut to hut walk through the Julian Alps (8-9hrs) Walking in breathtaking high country, the focus today is mountain splendour and alpine wilderness at its best. The trek continues toward the Mt Bogatin area made famous by Hemingway’s “Farewell to Arms”. Hiking up to the Vratca Saddle, you can pause to take in the magnificent view before heading down to the Krn Lakes Hut. The nearby Krn Lakes are a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch. Continue on to Lepena mountain hut for overnight accommodation. meals: B DAY 5 Trek to Bovec, afternoon free to relax or white water rafting option (2-3hrs) The final days walk is along the Soca Trail to Bovec with panoramic views enroute. The Soca River is regarded by many to be one of the most beautiful in Europe. It flows through narrow gorges and over broad gravel beds. The river’s characteristic turquoise hue and the wild beauty of its rapids and ravines make it a wonderful place to explore. In the afternoon you have the option to take in some white water rafting on the Soca river (the best rafting in Slovenia!). • JULIAN ALPS TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK 2The Julian Alps
1 JULIAN ALPS TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK www.slovenia.info 2The Julian Alps The Julian Alps are the southeast- ernmost part of the Alpine arc and at the same time the mountain range that marks the border between Slo- venia and Italy. They are usually divided into the East- ern and Western Julian Alps. The East- ern Julian Alps, which make up approx- imately three-quarters of the range and cover an area of 1,542 km2, lie entirely on the Slovenian side of the border and are the largest and highest Alpine range in Slovenia. The highest peak is Triglav (2,864 metres), but there are more than 150 other peaks over 2,000 metres high. The emerald river Soča rises on one side of the Julian Alps, in the Primorska re- gion; the two headwaters of the river Sava – the Sava Dolinka and the Sava Bohinjka – rise on the other side, in the Gorenjska region. The Julian Alps – the kingdom of Zlatorog According to an ancient legend a white chamois with golden horns lived in the mountains. The people of the area named him Zlatorog, or “Goldhorn”. He guarded the treasures of nature. One day a greedy hunter set off into the mountains and, ignoring the warnings, tracked down Zlatorog and shot him. Blood ran from his wounds Chamois The Triglav rose and fell to the ground. Where it landed, a miraculous plant, the Triglav rose, sprang up. Zlatorog ate the flowers of this plant and its magical healing powers made him invulnerable. At the same time, however, he was saddened by the greed of human beings.

  • Forest and Scrub Communities with Green Alder (Alnus Viridis) in Slovenia
HACQUETIA 12/2 • 2013, 95–185 DOI: 10.2478/HACQ-2013-0012 FOREST AND SCRUB COMMUNITIES WITH GREEN ALDER (ALNUS VIRIDIS) IN SLOVENIA Igor DAKSKOBLER1,2, Andrej ROZMAN2 & Andrej SELIŠKAR3 Abstract This paper provides phytosociological tables that describe scrub and forest communities with Alnus viridis in the Slovenian Alps. We described three new associations: Rhododendro hirsuti-Alnetum viridis (a green alder community on calcareous bedrock in the Eastern and Southeastern Alps), Huperzio selagi-Alnetum viridis (a green alder community in the silicate rocks under Mt. Komen in the eastern Savinja Alps) and Alno viridis- Sorbetum aucupariae (a successional stage of mountain ash and green alder on potential beech sites in the foot- hills of the southern Julian Alps; similar stages are known also elsewhere in the Alps), and presented additional three associations (Polysticho lonchitis-Fagetum, Rhodothamno-Laricetum and Rhododendro hirsuti-Pinetum mugo) whose stands comprise green alder. Key words: phytosociology, synsystematics, Alnetum viridis, Rhododendro hirsuti-Alnetum viridis, Huperzio selagi- Alnetum viridis, Alno viridis-Sorbetum aucupariae, the Julian Alps, the Karavanke Mountains, the Smrekovec Mountains. Izvleček V članku s fitocenološkimi tabelami opisujemo grmiščne in gozdne združbe, v katerih v slovenskih Alpah uspeva vrsta Alnus viridis.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE GEOFIZIKA VOL. 28 2011 Original scientific paper UDC 550.340 Ground structure and its seismogeological characteristics influencing local seismic effects of the 1998 and 2004 Upper Poso~je earthquakes in Slovenia Mihael Ribi~i~ University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Natural Science and Engineering, Department of Geology, Ljubljana, Slovenia Received 16 February 2011, in final form 13 April 2011 In 1998 and 2004, two strong earthquakes shook the NW region of Slove- nia. On the basis of a detailed inventory, the damages to structures were clas- sified into five damage grades, defined in accordance with the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS). After both earthquakes, extensive geological and geophysical investigations were carried out, including geological mapping, the excavation of 60 pits, drilling of 20 boreholes down to depths of 20 m, seismic measurements, geo-electrical measurements and seismic microtremor investi- gations. Since 1990, local seismic effects in Slovenia have been addressed through consecutive rules covering static calculations for the structures being built; the first of these rules was the old Slovenian regulation (Uradni list SFRJ 31/81), and the other two were the last Eurocode 8 (EU8-94 and EU8- SIST EN 1998-1:2005) regulations. In this report, we describe studies on how local ground conditions in- crease seismic effects on structures. On the basis of mentioned data in previ- ous paragraph, we attempted to establish how reliably this influence can be defined. A forecast of local seismic effects was compared with actually estab- lished damage to structures.

NATuRE TRAIL LANDFORMS of THE BOVEC REGIon On its way to the Adriatic sea, the Soča Valley has paved a zigzag path through the mountainous landscape. At the village of Žaga, it performs an almost full U-turn from the Alpine (W–E) to the Dinaric direction (NW–SE). In search of the shortest way to the Občina Bovec sea, the water has carved characteristic narrow and steep gorges on the sections that traverse the Alpine orographic mountain direction. An example of such a gorge is the narrow and deeply carved valley of Koritnica above the Kluže Fortress, which divides the Rombon massif from the peak of Krnica. Another interesting phenomenon by the Kluže Fortress (lat. claustra, blockade) is the the Bovec 60m deep narrow gorge, formed on the threshold between the higher lying side valley and the lower main valley. With the excep- mountain panorama tion of the vast Bovec basin, which runs parallel to the orographic mountain direction range, steep mountainsides and sharp . v a peaks are characteristic for the rest of the valleys in c and gravel terrace i i n r t the area. This is the result of heavy water and o K glacial erosion, but also of prevailing steep www.bovec.si lying thrust plains resulting in steep THe BOvEC lying rock layers.
