Attachment UU 2021-22 Faculty Salary Adjustments ACADEMIC, RESEARCH, AND STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE AND FINANCE AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE May 6, 2021 As detailed in the 2021-22 Faculty Compensation Plan, faculty salary adjustments are normally reviewed and approved by the Board of Visitors in two phases: adjustments for promotion are traditionally recommended at the spring meeting and adjustments based on performance are recommended at the fall meeting, or as needed to align with a state approved compensation program. A state authorized 5.0 percent salary increase, effective June 10, 2021, was approved by the 2021 General Assembly. Consistent with the approved 2021-22 Faculty Compensation Plan, the university facilitated a faculty merit review process resulting in recommendations effective June 10, 2021. The recommended salary adjustments for merit actions are listed in Attachment A. Summary of Faculty Compensation Review Process The university allocated 5.0 percent of base E&G faculty budgets to each senior management area to support this 2021-22 compensation process. Of the total 5.0 percent pool, units were encouraged to utilize approximately 4.25 percent for a traditional merit process, and up to 0.75 percent to recognize faculty with National Distinction (ND) and Outstanding Contributors (OC). 4,807 faculty were employed at the beginning of the merit cycle. Merit increases averaged 4.2 percent over the faculty salary base (4.4 percent on an individual basis for 4,457 recipients). ND/OC adjustments averaged 0.7 percent over the faculty salary base (3.3 percent on an individual basis for 876 recipients). Combining the traditional merit process with the special ND/OC recognition, overall faculty salary increase recommendations ranged from 0.0 percent to 32.5 percent, and averaged 4.9 percent as displayed in the distribution below. 1 Presentation Date: June 8, 2021 Attachment UU *Adjustments of 0% occur for various reasons including ineligibility due to hire date, change of position or separation from the university, recent promotion or retention action, performance, contractual agreement, and other employment-related factors. See Attachment B for a supplemental list of salary adjustments for senior leadership. RECOMMENDATION: That the proposed merit salary adjustments for faculty, effective June 10, 2021, be approved as presented in the following report.
