Informal caregiving; staying connected during social distancing

Across Minnesota and much of the world, we are living in a temporary new normal of caution, quarantine and social distancing. But with the Governor’s recent stay-at-home order in place, it is imperative we remember that social distancing does not and should not equate to social isolation, especially for our seniors. Most seniors remaining independent in their homes get assistance with daily life from a family member, neighbor or friend. Not only do these informal caregivers provide help, they also provide connection. Because older adults are perhaps most vulnerable to COVID-19, concern over spreading the virus has created a barrier for families and many community support systems in place for the care of older adults. Much of the support that seniors rely on isn't possible to deliver via traditional means. “During this time, families have to be extra organized and communication has to be efficient,” Krystal Wiebusch, LSW said. “We have to adapt our services to keep our seniors safe, while also ensuring that they remain connected. Senior isolation is dangerous.” Our Licensed Social Workers are now connecting remotely with the older adults we serve, as well as their family and friend caregivers. Especially now, finding resources to help navigate COVID-19 is critical for older adults and their families while also working to alleviate senior isolation through remote counseling in a time of social distancing. One tool that remains efficient and helpful for families to stay connected and informed, especially as they care for an older adult during this uncertain time is Carenextion.org. CareNextion is our website for families and other informal caregivers, where they can find resources and create a care team to manage schedules and update others on the progress of someone receiving their care. This service is completely free to users. The Senior Outreach & Caregiver Team of Social Workers are working diligently to find the best essential services and resources still available for seniors and families during this difficult time, and ensuring that they’re readily available on CareNextion. “We personally update and add resources to our CareNextion site and want you to be able to find the best options in your area,” Wiebusch said. “We’re all using technology more to stay connected during this period of social distancing, whether that’s Zoom or FaceTime, or CareNextion.” After all, though we may have to physically distance ourselves from one another, keeping each safe and connected still means coming together as a community. www.CareNextion.org

Watch out for SCAMS! The Top 6 Coronavirus Scams reported by the Better Business Bureau

There are new scams daily relating to the Covid 19 Pandemic and untruths out there that are targeting the senior population especially.

Phony Cures and Fake Masks: BBB Scam Tracker has received numerous reports of people receiving emails and messages claiming that, for a price, they can buy products the government is supposedly keeping secret – ways to prevent or cure coronavirus. Medical experts are working hard to find a coronavirus vaccine, but none currently exists. For more information on coronavirus cure scams, see the article BBB Scam Alert: Afraid of Getting Sick? Don’t Fall for a Coronavirus Con. Economic Impact Payment (Stimulus Check) Scams: As soon as stimulus packages are announced and approved, scammers quickly get to work sending out fake economic impact checks and asking consumers to pay fees to get their money earlier than what the IRS has promised. These claims are false and open consumers to the risk of identity theft and outright theft of the funds in their bank account. Phishing Scams: Several people are now working from home and con artists have stepped up their phishing scams. They may claim to be from an official department of the employer to offer IT support or claim the company issued computer has a virus. They may use scare tactics, stating the computer will crash if you don’t act immediately, all in an attempt to gain access to your computer remotely, or to your personal or company’s information. Government Impersonation: Another common phishing scam brought on by the coronavirus pandemic is fake emails and text messages claiming the govern- ment needs you to take an “online coronavirus test” by clicking a link they provide. No such test currently exists but if you click on the link, scammers can download malware onto your computer and gain access to your sensitive personal information. Employment Scams: Many people are looking for work online in the wake of coronavirus shutdowns. Fraudsters find ways to take advantage of this by posting phony work-from-home jobs promising remote work with good pay and no interview required. These cons often use real company names and can be very convincing. After you are “hired,” the company may charge you upfront for “training.” You may need to provide your personal and banking information to run a credit check or set up direct deposit. You may be “accidentally” overpaid with a fake check and asked to deposit the check and wire back the difference. Or, you are asked to buy expensive equipment and supplies to work at home. Shortage Scams (Price Gouging): Supplies such as hand sanitizer, face masks, and toilet paper are selling out in stores across the U.S. and Canada. Scammers take advantage of this situation and stockpile items in high demand. Then, they seek out potential cli- ents, online and in person, and sell the products at extremely high prices. Price gouging is illegal and high demands for products can lead to con artists selling products that are used, defective, or otherwise mishandled. In some cas- es, scammers will con people out of their money by accepting payments for products that don’t exist. This has been an issue with face masks. Masks are sold out in most local stores and major online sellers. Instead, consumers are turning to unfamiliar online shops. Unfortunately, phony sellers abound. These scam online retailers take shoppers’ money – as well as personal information – and never deliver the masks. x Please be wary of anyone who has contacted you via email, text message, phone calls or mail with big opportunities, vaccines, cures, donations to Covid causes. x Do NOT answer any calls who you do not know, Do NOT reply to any text messages who you do not know, Do NOT reply to any emails from a source that you do not know. x DO NOT click on any links as this will allow the scammers to access your computer and personal information. When in doubt ignore the messages. x Question anything that seems too good to be true. x Contact the BBB with any scams that you are aware of. x No message is too small for them to investigate.

Visit the BBB website at www.bbb.org or call them at 651-699-1111 to report any scams.

2020 CENSUS United States Census 2020 The Census counts every generation.

Every 10 years, the United States counts everyone who lives in the country, from newborn babies to the old- est among us. It is important for everyone to complete the 2020 Census so that communities like yours can be accurately funded and represented.

Responding is important: The 2020 Census will influence community funding and congressional represen- tation for the next decade. Information collected in the census will inform the allocation of more than $675 billion in federal funds for states and communities each year. That includes money for things like: First re- sponders, Medicare part B, Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program, Libraries and community centers, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) & Senior Community Service Employment Program.

Responding is easy: Beginning in mid-March 2020, you can respond to the census online, by phone or by mail. Choose the option that is most comfortable for you. Large-print guides to the questionnaire are availa- ble upon request. From May-July 2020, census takers will visit households that have not yet responded. A census taker can assist if you need help completing your form.

Responding is safe: Your personal information is kept confidential by law. Your responses can only be used to produce statistics. They cannot be shared with law enforcement agencies or used against you by any government agency or court in any way.

What’s in it for me? Your responses inform where over $675 billion is distributed each year to communi- ties nationwide for clinics, schools, roads and more. Census data gives community leaders vital information to make decisions about building community centers, opening businesses, and planning for the future. Responding also fulfills your civic duty because it’s mandated by the U.S. Constitution. The United States has counted its population every 10 years since 1790. Your responses are used to redraw legislative districts and determine the number of seats your state has in the U.S. of Representatives.

Is my information safe? Your responses to the 2020 Census are safe, secure and protected by federal law. Your answers can only be used to produce statistics. They cannot be used against you by any government agency or court in any way—not by the FBI, not by the CIA, not by the DHS, and not by ICE.

What will I be asked? You will be asked a few simple questions, like age, sex, and the number of people who live in your home, including children.

What won’t be asked? The census will never ask for Social Security numbers, bank or credit card numbers, money or donations, or anything related to political parties.

For more information, visit: 2020CENSUS.GOV

If you need help filling out the 2020Census form please call

763-497-8900 and we can help.

Who Won the War? ©Sandra E. S. Nelson

My mother was out weeding the garden on that hot summer day. I stood by, watching her, and then I asked the question, “Mama, who won the war?” She answered me promptly and with enthusiasm, “We did!”

I stood still as her words filtered into my little mind and then registered there: We did. WE. That meant US.

I must have stood a little taller, then, and must have gone off to ride my tricycle up and down the street in front of our house, all the while just letting my little mind whirl with questions for which I had no answers, just yet. But, I knew, I just knew, then, that my dad was the strongest, the smartest, the bravest, the most courageous of any man in our whole village.

How did we do it? What were the weapons used? Where were the rest of the bombs that we didn’t use? Are they up in the rafters of the garage? Did Daddy use the musket that was hanging in the shack now? How did he outsmart the enemy? Did he fight at night when I was asleep? Were we ever in any danger in the daytime when we were awake?

No wonder the other men in the area liked to come over and have a beer with my dad. They, too, must have known that he was the greatest and bravest of anyone. I knew better than to boast or brag to any of our neighbors about us winning the war! Yet I just knew they held us in the highest of esteem!

I am not sure just how old I was when I learned that “we did” meant that it was the United States of America that won the war. There were no bombs in our garage. The musket was a left-over from the Civil War, a war that was fought many years ago. Daddy was not a super-hero: in fact, he had not even served in the military.

Our neighbors, many of the very people on our street, had sons who had served and fought and some did not come back home, as they had died while fighting for our country, our freedoms. It was those men, the ones who were in the military, the ones who gave of their time and their skills and their service; those who gave the ultimate sacrifice: those men were the super-heroes.

I could stand proud and tall, yes, but not because of "us,” but because we were citizens of the United States of America! The winning side!

HOME PROGRAM The HOME Program Wright County Are you are one of the 90% of seniors who want to stay in your own home as you age, but are having a hard time handling some household chores or maintenance? We are excited to announce that help is now available for residents age 60 and over in St. Michael, Albertville, Buffalo, Monticello and Hanover through the HOME program of Senior Community Services.

HOME services include handyperson tasks such as changing light bulbs, installing safety devices, minor plumbing, minor electrical repair, checking carbon monoxide/smoke detectors, changing furnace filters, and hanging wall décor. Other services include housekeeping such as dusting, sweeping, mopping, cleaning kitchen and bathroom surfaces, laundry and grocery shopping. Outdoor services include snow removal, lawn mowing, window washing, and seasonal leaf raking and yard maintenance. Services will begin this spring and shoveling will begin in the fall. Our expansion to Wright County also brings well-paying job opportunities in the following areas: house- keeping staff, handyperson work, lawn care contractor, snow removal, repair staff and painting staff. We also welcome volunteers of all ages and abilities. If you know someone with skills that match our services, or who wants to give back to their community, please refer them to Joe Kaul, Program Coordinator, at (763) 416-7969 or [email protected]. HOME services are provided to age-qualified individuals at any income level. Lower income residents contribute to the cost of the service on a sliding fee scale based on their monthly income and ability to pay, and the HOME Program does accept some insurance payments. If you are a senior, a caregiver, or know someone who could use a little extra help with household chores, yard work or minor maintenance repairs, contact Joe at the above number or email address. We all age, and Senior Community Services knows that most people prefer to age in place at home. To find out more about us, visit www.seniorcommunity.org.

**The Home Program has suspended in-home services due to the Covid-19 concerns. ** Due to concerns about reducing the spread of the Covid-19 virus, the HOME Program has suspended normal indoor services for repairs and housekeeping until at least May 4th.

WE DO HAVE VOLUNTEERS TO DELIVERY FOOD AND SUPPLIES should you find yourself getting low on essentials and do not want to expose yourself by going shopping yourself. Please contact the Wright County HOME Program Coordinator at 763-416-7969 with your questions or concerns.. Our workers are conducting wellness checks by phone, so please let them know if have a need for food or supply delivery services before normal services return.

CROW RIVER SENIOR CENTER 763-497-8900 18 MAY/JUNE 2020 LAUGHTER & PUZZLES The Lighter Side: Puzzle Answers: “Wake-Up Call” No peeking until you are all done! Bernard, who is noted for his gracious manners, was awakened one morning at 4:40 a.m. by his ringing telephone.

“Your dog’s barking, and It’s keeping me awake!” yelled an angry voice.

Bernard thanked the caller and politely asked his name and number before hanging up

The next morning at precisely 4:40 a.m., Bernard called his neighbor back and said, “Good morning, Mr. Williams. I just called to say that I don’t have a dog.”
