SWEET SOUL MUSIC REVUE A Change Is Gonna Come It is August 1955 in Mississippi and a 14-year-old African American, Emmet Louis Till, is being dragged out of his bed by white men. They brutally torture and then drown the boy, because Emmet had whistled at the white village beauty queen and called Bye, bye babe after her. The court acquits the murderers. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, an elderly African American lady, refuses to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. She is arrested and taken to court for violating segregation laws. These events in 1955 mark the beginning of the African American Civil Rights Movement, which will grow into a proud political force under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King. By 1968 it will have put an end to arbitrary injustice caused by racial segregation in the U.S. There have been times that I thought I couldn‘t last for long / But now I think I‘m able to carry on / It‘s been a long time coming, but I know a change is gonna come – This soul anthem, composed by Sam Cooke in 1963, speaks of the hope for change during these times. Sam himself had been arrested for offences against the laws relating to civil disorders and rioting, because he and his band had tried to check in to a “whites only” motel. Closely linked to the Civil Rights Movement, soul music delivers the soundtrack for this period of political change and upheaval in the United States. -
Full Results of Survey of Songs
Existential Songs Full results Supplementary material for Mick Cooper’s Existential psychotherapy and counselling: Contributions to a pluralistic practice (Sage, 2015), Appendix. One of the great strengths of existential philosophy is that it stretches far beyond psychotherapy and counselling; into art, literature and many other forms of popular culture. This means that there are many – including films, novels and songs that convey the key messages of existentialism. These may be useful for trainees of existential therapy, and also as recommendations for clients to deepen an understanding of this way of seeing the world. In order to identify the most helpful resources, an online survey was conducted in the summer of 2014 to identify the key existential films, books and novels. Invites were sent out via email to existential training institutes and societies, and through social media. Participants were invited to nominate up to three of each art media that ‘most strongly communicate the core messages of existentialism’. In total, 119 people took part in the survey (i.e., gave one or more response). Approximately half were female (n = 57) and half were male (n = 56), with one of other gender. The average age was 47 years old (range 26–89). The participants were primarily distributed across the UK (n = 37), continental Europe (n = 34), North America (n = 24), Australia (n = 15) and Asia (n = 6). Around 90% of the respondents were either qualified therapists (n = 78) or in training (n = 26). Of these, around two-thirds (n = 69) considered themselves existential therapists, and one third (n = 32) did not. There were 235 nominations for the key existential song, with enormous variation across the different respondents. -
PAUL YOUNG in the Middle of the 1980S, Paul Young Became One Of
PAUL YOUNG In the middle of the 1980s, Paul Young became one of the biggest pop stars in the world, creating a body of work that endures to this day. A blend of the old school and new school, he was the epitome of someone who had worked his way up from – quite literally – the factory floor to become a superstar, scoring number one singles on both sides of the Atlantic. When he broke through in 1983, his Anthony Price besuited look was one of two iconic pop images in the UK that year. The other was David Bowie, then under his serious moonlight. Paul Young was born in the rock’n’roll era and grew up during the beat boom. Born in Luton in January 1956, he took piano lessons, was a self- taught guitarist, and as a teenager, fell under the thrall of Island Records. Young loved Free and because of them, he began listening to things around the margins, things that they listened to. He wanted to play bass like Andy Fraser and sing like Paul Rodgers. “I was always drawn towards to blues and soul.” Young recalls. “Even though Free had had a hit with ‘All Right Now’, they were a blues band, they knew they needed a pop song, so they wrote a pop song, and it was a hit. But when you look at their other stuff, they went straight back to the blues.” In 1972, aged 16, Young took up a position at the Vauxhall manufacturing plant in Luton, serving an apprenticeship just like his father before him. -
