I think I’ve already read you this about: graduated from Hapeville in ’47, my father had a 500 acre farm. Okay. In 1947 Georgia schools had only 11 grades so we graduated at age 16. My father sold the 500 acre farm and we moved to Haines City, Florida to buy citrus groves. I didn’t put that in here but the reason this happened my mother went to the University of Georgia and she had a friend at the University of Georgia and they lived in Haines City and they got to be friends and so Dad came down and looked at the oranges and decided to sell, to sell the 500 acre farm in Georgia and come down here and do oranges. Soash: Okay. Attaway: Then I went to Florida Southern and graduated in ’51 with a degree in chemistry, you’ve got that. … Now you want me to go on time-wise? Soash: Where did you get your masters and doctorate degrees and what were those degrees in? Attaway: Okay, I went to the University of Florida in 1951, received a masters degree in organic chemistry in 1953.

Sure, some of the old Southern guys might call you ‘Dear’ or something. I ignored that. I knew people that said, ‘I wouldn’t put up with that.’ To me that had no meaning. What was meaningful was the conversation that you had with them. Again, I had never felt a great deal of inequity. I had to learn in reality. I had to get into Congress and learn the statistics to understand the tremendous inequity that women had in the law. I had never felt it in my home. I certainly was never taught that growing up. I was always taught that I was smart and capable of making my own decisions. That was what my father really insisted on me. So I didn’t feel that greatly. And I didn’t feel it in Congress. There is something tremendously satisfying about listening to people discuss your characters as if they are real people because, of course, to me they are real people. Peter and Amanda and Liz are as real to me as many people I have met in the flesh. More real than some! The Bookman’s Tale grew out of some of my own passions—rare books, the English countryside, and William Shakespeare. It’s been wonderful to see how those passions have reverberated with readers. I’ve loved hearing the stories of my readers’ travels in England, their book collections, and their love of Shakespeare. This novel also taught me the joy of writing historical characters—including those smaller actors on the stage of history whose parts are all but forgotten. Yes, I did get to write William Shake- speare as a character (and I could invent his personality because we know nothing about what sort of person he was); but I especially enjoyed writing characters like Robert Green, John War- burton, Humfrey Wanley, and William H. Smith—all real people who are mostly unknown to the modern reader.
