I initially considered that being so close to members of the band for years that have spanned from before Pagan Altar was formed to the present day would not make me objective enough in my approach. Having been an ex-drummer with the band, in fact the first, an association that I am extremely proud of, I suppose my natural tendencies and inclinations would lean towards looking at the band through rose coloured glasses. I have therefore tried to observe and analyse the whole situation from a totally detached viewpoint, but human nature being what it is, some of my own opinions and observations have probably crept in and become incorporated within some of the analytical assumptions. I have refrained from mentioning myself in the Bio, this is not due to any pretence at a misguided view of modesty that I might have but because I genuinely feel that any major achievements made by the band were after my departure. -

In the second half of the 1970s, Brian Eno, Larry Fast, Mickey Hart, Stomu Yamashta and many other musicians blurred the lines between rock and avantgarde. Brian Eno (34), ex-keyboardist for Roxy Music, changed the course of rock music at least three times. The experiment of fusing pop and electronics on Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy (sep 1974 - nov 1974) changed the very notion of what a "pop song" is. Eno took cheap melodies (the kind that are used at the music-hall, on television commercials, by nursery rhymes) and added a strong rhythmic base and counterpoint of synthesizer. The result was similar to the novelty numbers and the "bubblegum" music of the early 1960s, but it had the charisma of sheer post-modernist genius. Eno had invented meta-pop music: avantgarde music that employs elements of pop music. He continued the experiment on Another Green World (aug 1975 - sep 1975), but then changed its perspective on Before And After Science (? 1977 - dec 1977). Here Eno's catchy ditties acquired a sinister quality. -
Ars Pro Concreta
A Proposal for Staging By Gibson DelGiudice Concreta Pro Ars Copyright © August 30, 2016 1 I. ARTIST STATEMENT Based on the 1961 Richard Attenborough-produced film and the novel by Mary Hayley Bell, Whistle Down the Wind is a thoughtful study of childhood innocence and simple faith contrasted with adult cynicism. In brief, the plot follows the fortunes of a mysterious man caught between the prejudice of adults and the innocence of the young. When this stranger takes refuge in a barn on a remote farm, its owner’s three children (Swallow, Brat, and Poor Baby, in the novel and the musical; they’re renamed in the film), who’ve recently lost their mother, mistakenly believe him to be the Second Coming of Christ, and they vow to protect the stranger from the world that waits outside – the townspeople who are determined to catch a fugitive hiding in their midst. The original was set in Lancashire, England, but for the musical, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Jim Steinman, together with Patricia Knop and Gale Edwards (co-book writers with Webber), reset the original story in America’s deep South (specifically, Louisiana) in 1959, causing the musical’s story-line to revolve in part around the time and place where the word “teenager” was invented. They also aged the oldest daughter, Swallow, up to 15, to be able to play with a “coming of age” angle where, as fantasy and reality collide, Swallow is torn between the two and begins to discover who she is and where she is going. -

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: an Analysis Into Graphic Design's
Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

Sermon. Lent IV. 3.14.2021.The God of Light and Dark.Pdf
The God of Light and Dark Lent IV – Sunday, March 14, 2021 Trinity Church in the City of Boston William W. Rich In the name of the God who saves us, the Creator of both shining light and enfolding dark. Amen. Exactly three hundred years ago another pandemic struck Boston. Deadlier than COVID. As in our own time, it forced people into quarantine. Houses that were stricken with the deadly affliction flew red flags outside signaling to all who passed by: “God have mercy on this house.” God have mercy, indeed. It was smallpox. Over 6000 were infected. 850 died. The population of Boston that year was a mere 11,000. 55% of the city was infected. Over 7% died. Of those who didn’t die, but were infected, most were pockmarked, and many blinded for life. As in our own time, that pandemic stirred up strong, even violent feelings and actions. Accusations. Self-assured certainties about the disease and how to handle it. “On a November day in 1721, a small bomb was hurled through the window of a renowned Boston preacher named Cotton Mather. Attached to the explosive, which fortunately did not detonate, was the message: “Cotton Mather, you dog, dam you! I’ll inoculate you with this; with a pox to you.’’ This was not a religiously motivated act of terrorism, but a violent response to Reverend Mather’s active promotion of smallpox inoculation.” [https://sitn.hms.harvard.edu/flash/special-edition-on-infectious-disease/2014/the-fight-over-inoculation-during-the-1721-boston-smallpox- epidemic/] Cotton Mather has often been remembered for and credited with introducing inoculation to the colonies and doing a great deal to promote the use of this method as the standard for smallpox prevention during the 1721 epidemic. -
Rock 'N' Roll Dreams Come Through: R.I.P. Jim Steinman
Rock ‘n’ Roll Dreams Come Through: R.I.P. Jim Steinman As a kid I hated music like Meat Loaf. I thought it was pompous and overdone, and I never liked having to hear that stupid “Paradise By The Dashboard Light” song at every wedding. It wasn’t till years later that I was reading a review of a Meat Loaf concert that it all clicked and I realized the genius of Meat Loaf and of his songwriter, Jim Steinman. If the record label told him couldn’t have seven choruses in a song, Steinman put nine choruses in. He curb-stomped the idea of the 3-minute, radio-friendly pop song. In that respect, Steinman was more punk than Fugazi. Everything he did had great lyrics and dramatic storylines, and went against what pop songs are supposed to be. In addition to working with the Loaf, Steinman wrote the hits “Total Eclipse of The Heart” for Bonnie Tyler and “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” for Celine Dion. Sadly, Steinman recently passed away in Connecticut. But through his music, he will live forever. The Living Pins — Freaky Little Monster Children EP It’s normal for bands to take a little time after their debut and second release. In the case of Austin psych-rockers The Living Pins, that little time translated into a quarter of a century. Was it worth the wait? I just hope nobody was holding their breath. Freaky Little Monster Children is like a basket of shiny psych-rock nuggets. “Jaguar” is fueled by a guitar riff reminiscent of “Honkey Tonk Women” with a chorus that sounds like ’80s UK alternative rock on acid.
