2 2006 Southern Miss Tennis Media Guide 2006 Men’s Tennis Outlook

In 2005, the Southern Miss men’s tennis team record- ed their first winning season since 2001, posting a record of 13-9 and finished in a tie for fifth place at the Conference USA Tournament. That success was accom- plished without any depth past the six players needed to play in each match. In 2006, the Golden Eagles look to continue that win- ning trend with much more to offer in the depth department including a roster that features four returnees and four newcomers, giving the team eight players in the mix. Of course, in comparison to the two teams, last year’s was one known for its experience. This year’s group boasts a youth movement with four freshman signees that has Head Coach Teddy Viator excited about what he can do with this year’s squad, as he enters his 19th season with the program. “I like having more guys on the roster so we can do more things with the lineup,” Viator said. “It also makes it better for practice, and for creating good team chemistry with the older guys showing the young guys what to do. “Last year, we had more experience with more players Reid Bourgeois knowing what to do in the matches. He brings a good work ethic to the team, and is a dependable person who showed that by helping out a lot in the fall.” While taking a closer look at his team, Viator embraces both the strengths and weaknesses that will accompany the team in 2006. “Our strength is going to be our depth,” Viator said. “We are solid from No. 1 to No. 8. Our weakness will be finding someone to replace David Canudas as our No. 1 player. “We’re also going to be improved in doubles. However, our weakness will be the top spots, though our bottom spots are solid. So we’re going to have to beat people with our depth. We’ll probably see a lot of rotation through our first three spots until we find out who will be there permanently.” Beginning at the top, Viator turns to his seniors, Reid Bourgeois and Marc Lux, to oversee the development of Marc Lux this year’s team through their actions on and off the court.
