That success was accom- plished without any depth past the six players needed to play in each match. In 2006, the Golden Eagles look to continue that win- ning trend with much more to offer in the depth department including a roster that features four returnees and four newcomers, giving the team eight players in the mix. Of course, in comparison to the two teams, last year’s was one known for its experience. This year’s group boasts a youth movement with four freshman signees that has Head Coach Teddy Viator excited about what he can do with this year’s squad, as he enters his 19th season with the program. “I like having more guys on the roster so we can do more things with the lineup,” Viator said. “It also makes it better for practice, and for creating good team chemistry with the older guys showing the young guys what to do. “Last year, we had more experience with more players Reid Bourgeois knowing what to do in the matches. This season we have more young players, but that’s why we play in the fall so As a four-year letterwinner at Alabama, Brodersen fin- we can get them ready to compete. He went undefeated playing No. 5 singles his senior year, so he knows what it takes to get the guys to play at a higher level and how to condition them. He brings a good work ethic to the team, and is a dependable person who showed that by helping out a lot in the fall.” While taking a closer look at his team, Viator embraces both the strengths and weaknesses that will accompany the team in 2006. “Our strength is going to be our depth,” Viator said. “We are solid from No. 1 to No. 8. Our weakness will be finding someone to replace David Canudas as our No. 1 player. “We’re also going to be improved in doubles. However, our weakness will be the top spots, though our bottom spots are solid. So we’re going to have to beat people with our depth. We’ll probably see a lot of rotation through our first three spots until we find out who will be there permanently.” Beginning at the top, Viator turns to his seniors, Reid Bourgeois and Marc Lux, to oversee the development of Marc Lux this year’s team through their actions on and off the court. SouthernMiss.com 3 2006 Men’s Tennis Outlook Dylan Mezey worked hard to get into good physical condition this sea- son. I’m looking for some good things from Marc, including senior leadership to this team along with Reid. Marc wants to have a good senior year, and through all of his hard work, I think we can count on him a lot this year.” Juniors Juan Garzon and Dylan Mezey return to the team after having career-high sophomore seasons. At No. 4 and No. 5 singles, Garzon had a 15-11 over- all record, along with a 9-7 dual record. Teamed with Canudas at No. 3 doubles, Garzon posted a team-best 11- 5 record in the spring. In two tournaments and one fall match, Garzon posted a 1-4 singles record and a 1-2 dou- bles record during the fall season. “Juan has improved by to working on his game by coming more to the net,” Viator said. “He’s probably going to be No. 3 or No. 4 in the lineup.” Mezey had a 17-12 singles overall record, including an 11-8 dual record, at No. 6 singles. He had a 5-10 overall doubles record, and a 3-9 dual record at No. 1 doubles teamed with Lux. Mezey recorded the most successful fall Bourgeois is coming off his second-consecutive season season, including tying for a team-high five singles wins, with 20 wins in singles, leading the team in 2005 in that posting a 5-2 singles record and a 1-2 doubles record. category with an overall record of 20-13 at No. 5 singles, Playing in two tournaments and one fall match, Mezey including a 13-8 dual record.
