Sons of three members of The Allman Brothers band will take the stage. Devon Allman (son of Gregg) and Duane Betts (son of Dickey) play guitar and sing. Berry Oakley Jr. plays bass. The band also includes slide guitarist Johnny Stachela, keyboardist John Ginty, and drummer-percussionists R. Scott Bryan and John Lum. Allman and Betts have been friends for years. “We would run into each other backstage in England,” Allman said, “or at an event or down in Sarasota (Florida), where his dad lives. We’d catch up, do a little jamming. We always had it in the back of our minds, ‘Aw, man, it would be cool to join forces someday.’” Now they have. The concert will feature new music, songs from their previous solo projects, and classic Allman Brothers and Gregg Allman favorites in honor of the 50th anniversary of The Allman Brothers Band’s founding. A RESOLUTION BY THE STATE TRANSPORTATION BOARD OF GEORGIA 2001 DUANE ALLMAN BOULEVARD AND RAYMOND BERRY OAKLEY III BRIDGE — DESIGNATED. WHEREAS, in 1969, a group of young but already seasoned and demonstrably and incredibly talented musicians, including guitarist Duane Allman, bassist Berry Oakley, vocalist and organist Gregg Allman, guitarist Dickey Betts, percussionist Butch Trucks, and percussionist Jaimoe, formed the Allman Brothers Band and established the band's home in Macon in April of that year; and WHEREAS, at now legendary jam sessions at their initial base on College Street, their later home at the "Big House" on Vineville Avenue, and other locations in and around Macon, including Rose Hill Cemetery and a farm known as Idlewild South, the band fused elements of blues, jazz, rock, and country music to create a musical genre now known and loved as "southern rock" and became one of the most exciting groups of performers ever to take the stage; and WHEREAS, the band members' talents and tour de force marathon performances across the nation not only received critical acclaim and awed their peers among musical greats but also served to inspire countless others and made Macon a musical mecca; and WHEREAS, Duane Allman's all too brief life was tragically ended at age 24 by a motorcycle accident on a street in Macon on October 29, 1971, and Berry Oakley suffered a similar fate at the same age and at almost the same location a year later on November 11, 1972; WHEREAS although their presence is sadly missed, these musicians' incomparable -

“The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East”-- The Allman Brothers Band (1971) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Alan Paul (guest post)* Ori Album cover Original label Duane Allman The Allman Brothers Band’s double album, “At Fillmore East,” is often and rightly proclaimed as rock’s greatest live release. It still sounds completely fresh, totally inspired, and utterly original. It is the gold standard of blues-based rock and roll. But, after almost 45 years of such praise, it’s easy to lose sight of what a radical album “At Fillmore East” really was. It took a lot of guts for the band and their record label to release a two-LP live album as their third release. After all, when it came out in October 1971, the band was something of a commercial flop. Though drawing raves for their marathon live shows that combined the Grateful Dead’s go-anywhere jam ethos with a far superior musical precision, their first two releases still had caused barely a ripple in the marketplace. The band’s self-titled 1969 debut sold less than 35,000 copies and the following year’s “Idlewild South” did only marginally better despite two singles, “Midnight Rider” and “Revival.” The lackluster sales didn’t reflect the increasingly large and rabid crowds the Allman Brothers were drawing on their relentlessly paced tours. Crowds loved the band’s rare combination of blues, jazz, rock and country and their willingness to play until somebody pulled the plug. Finally, it dawned on the band and its management that a live album was the only way to capture the band’s real essence. -

The Allman Brothers Story "I was 16 when Rolling Stone sent me out on the road with the Allman Brothers Band. I spent over two weeks amassing interviews with all the band members and their roadies. The night before I was to leave, Gregg Allman - still mourning the recent deaths of his legendary guitarist- brother Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley - had a late-night vision that the FBI could possibly be using me to investigate his band. He demanded all my tapes back until further notice. I left the tour in an emotional mess and wound up catatonic in the San Francisco airport, where I ran into my then-stewardess sister Cindy. She cheered me up and sent me home. Days later, the tapes arrived at my house with an apology note from Gregg Allman. I never told the magazine. It was my first cover story." - Cameron Crowe - Summer 2000 In which a rock & roll band from Dixie struggles in dreary motels, six-session-a-night grinds and a $48,000 debt, then a couple years later plays to sellout crowds for $100,000 a night...all the while riding the shotgun to death. The accent comes up out of Nashville, by way of Georgia, makes a dash across the States and ends up vaguely California. He sounds a bit like Kris Kristofferson, looks uncannily like his late brother, Duane. The hotel television is on; the sound is off.
