This was true with both parents, but its a very unnatural thing to lose a child, and very difficult to adjust to regardless of our faith in God and our Christian training.”

It is true, Carolyn and Ted, and all other of our dear kindred throughout this great nation, who grieve the loss of loved ones. It is very difficult to lose a member of the family. And our Christian Religion, as it has come down to us in a number of forms, all taken from our beloved Bible, but also mixed with the philosophies of men, is not quite adequate in times of extreme and dire need. Because our kind Father in Heaven knows this, He has, in His mercy and personal concern for each of us, individually, revealed his will again in these Latter-Days. He has placed a Prophet upon the earth, through whom he reveals His will to this generation, and bestows His Blessings, and His Comfort. It is meant for our individual comfort and well being. It holds the promise of Eternal Life with our families as we know them here and now. Through our prayers He can bless and comfort us with the knowledge that the partings will not be long, and the families he has given us, in this stage of our eternal life, are meant to be with us always. He was such an inspiration to all who knew him well that I thank God each day that we got to keep him for 22 years. Bruce was riding his cycle in a nearby Park hoping to get a better suntan prior to going to Saudi Arabia in the fall on a job assignment, when he met with an accident that instantly took his life.

We salute both for untiring labor and true devotion. 397 *3505 ALBERT SIDNEY “BERT” JARED, 5 (John Jared 4, Samuel Raulsten Jared 3, William Jared 2, John Jared 1) born 30 November 1862 Putnam County, Tennessee to John and Amanda (Huddleston) Jared married 3 September 1884 Sarah E WATTS born 11 February 1861, Smith County, Tennessee She died 25 August 1942, age 81 years. Daughter of John M. and Betty (Young) WATTS, and the sister of Margaret WATTS, who married Bert's brother, Arch W. WATTS. Bert died 3 May 1922. Bert and Arch purchased severity five acres of land in Putnam County from Joel W. Kerr, 23 April 1898. It was located in the 10th Civil Dist. called “Bryant Ridge”, on Martin's Creek. The $500.00 purchase price was to be disposed of with $100.00 cash, and 133.33 to be paid in each of the next three years on April 23rd. The deed was not filed until the property was paid for. It is dated 11 May 1905. The property had one house, which both families lived in until Bert and Sarah could build another house. The land was divided into two plots of 37 ½ acres each. A Jared Cemetery is located near the old homes.

Page 141 SUPPLEMENT I Aunt Callie said they moved to Putnam County from Smith County, when she was four years old, (1897). Uncle Arch died of TB at age 39 years, January 22, 1905. Just four months before the mortgage was paid off and they received the deed to the property they were buying.)

Henry the son of Bert rented the “Uncle Arch” farm from Aunt. Margaret and Henry and Belle lived in their house three different times. Three of their children were born there.

The house that Bert built had one large family room and a side room, lean-to type, for the kitchen, with the up-stairs or loft. Later a “dog- trot”, and another room were added. That is the way it has been since Mama (Vira Estelle (Jared) Allen), can remember.

“Granny’, (Sarah Watts Jared) lived there until she died in 1942. Then the property was sold and the proceeds divided among the children.

Sarah died 25 August 1942 at the age of 80 years, from lockjaw after having stepped on a nail that injured her foot. (Information taken from Courthouse deeds, Tombstone dates, and living family members, by Wilda Luttrell)

Albert Sidney “Bert” Jared and Sarah Watts were married 3 September 1884, Putnam County Tennessee by Joseph Holladay, Esq. Witnesses were A. W. Jared and J. M. Watts.

“Bert” was a farmer and property owner. He played the accordion for entertainment. He died of a stroke 3 May 1922. Sarah lived a widow for twenty years. She had her first bus ride at age eighty years. Her son, Henry was sick, and she went to her daughter, Carrie’s house and told her she wanted her to stop the bus for her, that she was going to see Henry. She spent a few nights there, until Henry died 10 December 1941, just eight months before her own demise. Kenneth and Bill, Henry’s sons would go and live with her for several days at a time so she would not be alone.

Sarah wove baskets. Her granddaughter, Estelle Allen, has a little egg basket Sarah made for her when she was a little girl. She also carded and spun wool. The old Spinning wheel was handed down four generations to Eugene Jared, but it was destroyed when his home was leveled by fire in 1979.

Floyd Lee’s mother died when he was only one year old. He was raised by Mart and Bessie CANNON. Bessie died when he was eight, and Floyd Lee was adopted by Amy Hardcastle and her husband. As he stated it, “They were mean to him.” He stayed seven years with Marlin KIRBY.

Floyd and Bertha slipped off to get married. Her mother, who was expecting another child, had gone to the spring to take a bucket of milk, and to get a bucket of water. They put the milk in the spring to get cold, and it would not ruin. She had to walk way down in the hollow, and she left Bertha watching her younger brother, Bill. When she returned Bertha was gone, at the age of “Sweet Sixteen”. Bertha stopped at the barn and put on the clothes she got married in, and was on her way!

Her parents must have been quite concerned about their first daughter getting married because her father sat on the porch with his shot gun waiting for Floyd when they came back. They did not return for several weeks, so there was no problem when they came hone. “Everybody was happy to see them.”

When Belle returned from the spring, she found she had taken the wrong bucket to put in the spring. She had carried the molasses bucket instead of the milk, and had to go back again. [I’ll bet she went back talking to herself and kicking little objects out of the trail.]

Albert and Betty were living in Indianapolis, Indiana with their thirteen month old son, Gary. They left Indiana to go home to Tennessee and stay with her mother until after the baby was born. Kid-like she had not seen a Doctor, although’ she was six months and three weeks pregnant.

She wanted to go home so bad, she felt the incidents surrounding the “move to Tennessee” accounted for the pain, and it would go away. Some fifty miles down the highway it got worse, but still they drove about two hundred miles further. Finally, unbearable, she told Albert to “pull over and stop and let me die.”

He stopped at a Service Station to enquire where the hospital was. The attendant ran to the phone and called an ambulance. He was told a man had had a heart attack, and they were sending their last ambulance after him. The attendant said, “She will be dead by then.” So they sent a fire truck to the heart patient until they could get an ambulance, and sent the ambulance for Betty.

The Ambulance drivers were so scared she would die before they could get to the hospital they stopped at a Doctor’s Clinic Office. Within five minutes they had a tiny three pound girl. Then, for the surprise of her life she heard, “There must be another one!”

The second baby gave them a real scare because they had a problem getting it to start breathing. The Doctor was so pleased to deliver his very first set of twins, but Betty was thinking, “Dear God, What am I going to do with three babies?”

The Dr. said if they had gone a quarter of a mile further they would have lost all three of them.

After four hours at the Clinic they continued their journey from Munfordsville, Kentucky, by ambulance, to Cookeville, Tennessee Hospital where the Doctors said they would never raise the babies. How wrong they were. Ten years later, when the three were all in school, they were blessed with another set of twins.

MaeNell and Cordell were married on the front porch of MaeNell's parent’s home down in Ellis Hollow. The minister rode a horse down to the ceremony. He charged them $1.00 for his service. They celebrated their fiftieth Wedding Anniversary 9 February 1980.

They are property owners, farmers, and all around good neighbors. They attend the Baxter Church of Christ.

A large number of family and friends were on hand to congratulate the couple, who were married February 9, 1930. MaeNell writes: “I married Cordell Jared Feb 9 1930. We celebrate our Golden Anniversary this past February. We married during the depression and were renters for several years. Then, during the war we lived in Detroit, Michigan. Cordell worked at Machines, I worked and we saved enough money to buy a farm. He’s done quite a bit of carpenter work as well as farming.

Sarah was an English teacher at Cookeville Senior High School. Eugene has a private Law practice at Cookeville. He is owner and operator of Cove Hollow Boat Dock, Center Hill Lake, Putnam County He was a Lt. in the U. S. Army and saw action in Korea. Sarah lost her life in a tragic fire that destroyed their home in May 1979.

John and Estelle moved from Putnam County about 1935 to Sumner County Tennessee with their two little dark haired brown eyed girls. John worked during the winter months in Detroit, Michigan. Two sons were born to them in Robertson County, Tennessee Then they moved to Sumner County and lived near White House. In 1948, one year after their oldest child was married, they moved to Davidson County Tennessee onto the farm of John H. McCann two miles from Brentwood on the Old Hickory Blvd. That house holds lots of memories for the family such as the blizzard of 1951, the fire of 1952 or 3, and Wilda’s wedding. The farm had over 500 acres and grandmother Jared, Belle McBroom, lived in the little house on Granny White Pike, near the Granny White Historical Home. Even though John made many trips back and forth to Michigan to work during the slack season on the farm, he lived his entire life in Tennessee, except for a few short months when he moved his family with him to Michigan. Country life became somewhat modern in this home, for it was here we bought our first electric refrigerator, electric stove, and washing machine. He also installed running water, and a telephone for the very first time.

A share cropper’s life is not an easy one. Everyone had to work. We raised corn, wheat, barley, and oats, but the main money crop was tobacco. We thought Daddy kinds’ over did on the tobacco crops. Sometimes as much as six or seven acres this was before the boys were old enough to help.

We rode the wagon and went to Church when it was too far to walk. We were members of the Church of Christ. Mama was extremely religious. In 1947 she pulled off her shoes and waded the cold icy water to the other side of the Honey Run Creek to Church. Although’ we never had a car until the children were old enough to drive, Estelle never missed a Church Service. She often kept the preacher or other Church leaders in her home.

With the help of all the family she raised a big garden. William, “Dub” Luttrell is a Formica Mechanic, and was employed for twenty years as a cabinetmaker and foreman. He holds a certificate in Maintenance at Baptist Hospital, Nashville, where he is employed.

At age 24 he was inducted into the U. S. Army at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He served in the Panama Canal Zone during the Vietnam War. He dropped out of school when a teenager, but returned after his 2nd marriage, and while working 52 hours per week graduated through night school attendance for three and years, from High School, with a cap and Gown, Class Ring, the Works! He was 40 years old, nevertheless, he received the Eastman Award for the most promising student in the Class of 1975.

Wilda graduated from High School, then received her B. S. Degree from Andrew Jackson University in Nashville. Then did post graduate work in the Medical Field, which she loves, and became a Medical Secretary where she worked for thirteen years. She enjoys many crafts, plays the piano and banjo, has published a book of songs, and a Cook Book entitled, “Cumberland Cook Book".

(Eleanor’s Note) Wilda has done all the histories and stories in this section of the book. I very much wish there were room to include all the nice things she has said and recorded about you, her closest kin. She has a great heart, full to overflowing with love. Her accomplishments are many and they extend into many areas. Only her closest associates would be able to know and appreciate her worth. His older brother, Bill, was drafted into the Army. Kenneth was work ing at the CC Camp at Mason, Nevada, so young Tommy was the only boy at home to help his mother and sisters. He lived at home and took care of his mother until she died. He helped her to take care of his sister’s two little 165 girls after she died in 1962. The children actually lived with Aunt Elizabeth. Their two houses were side by side, so, of course, Tommy stayed right in there. He was just like a Daddy to the girls, whose love and concern for him matched his for them. Tommy was employed at Nashville Union Stockyards as a Receiver until their closing in 1973. Since that time he has been employed at Nashville for Kusan’s Plastics. His hobby is whittling. He makes rolling pins, and tissue dispensers, knives, forks, and spoons of wood. Betty is employed as a shipping clerk *7493 MARTHA FERN JARED born 26 June 1931 to Henry Mason and Mary Etta Belle (McBroom) JARED. Martha Fern Jared and Clarence Eidson were divorced, and Martha Fern married 2) 10 April 1955 Max David VAUGHAN, Jr. of Bucyrus, Ohio. Max was killed a week later, 18 April 1955. He was a Truck Driver, and in Astribula, Ohio a car passed in the road with no lights on. That caused the accident. Martha Fern died 6 Apr. 1962, and the two little girls, ages ten and eleven were left orphaned. They were raised by close family members. Mrs. Callie Jared Thompson. 86, member of a prominent Putnam County family, died Wednesday. October 31, at Cookeville General Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Thompson a native of Smith County and a resident of Baxter at the time of her death, was the daughter of Sidney and Sarah Watts Jared and the wife of Arthur Thompson Sr. Mrs. Thompson, described as an “outstanding member of her community,” was a member of the Baxter Church of Christ. She was active In all her neighborhood and home duties until her illness and death. She always said her first love of her life was Arthur, her five sons and her daughter. Only last year the Thompson’s celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Thompson is survived by her husband Arthur Thompson Sr. of Baxter, five sons, Jennings Thompson of Kansas, Frank and Solon Thompson of California and Robert and Arthur Thompson of Baxter, a daughter, Mrs. Inis Fahnestock Taylor of Michigan, 17 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Woodrow and Cordell Thompson; and one daughter, Norma Thompson. Services will be held today, November 2, at 2 p.m. at the Baxter Church of Christ. The funeral will be conducted by Brother Tom Compton. Burial will be in the Thompson Cemetery.

Obituary Collie Thompson BAXTER Funeral services for Callie Jared Thompson, 86, will be held at the Baxter Church of Christ on Friday, November 2, at 2 P.M. with Bro. Tom Compton officiating. Aunt Carrie always wore her bonnet. She had beautiful hair, but she said, “Pa likes it this way.” She loved her bonnet. When she was suffering in her last sickness, she would feel her head and see if she had her bonnet on. After her funeral the girls slipped her bonnet on, and she was buried in it.

We found her in bed. She failed to get up for breakfast. She had her bed covers folded across her chest-eyes closed-was quoting page after page of the Bible- and tracing with her finger, just as she did when she read the Bible which she did so much of the time. THREE DEAD BY DROWNING Brother and Two Sisters Lose Lives in Swollen Branch Tuesday Night Albert Jared, aged 20, his two sisters, Hixie aged 22, and Fannie aged 17, were drowned Tuesday Night near Mrs. Fannie Furgerson’s in the Hawkin’s Branch, which is the dividing line between the Fourth and Fifth Civil Districts of this County.

The young people had attended a party given at the home of Squire Will Davis, and were on the way to their home, which is on the farm of Capt. J. M. Henry, in the Fifth District. The road they traveled crossed the Branch, which was much swollen from the rains of the night, and it was into this stream that the three young people, with the happy thoughts of the pleasant evening spent yet fresh in their minds, went into their deaths. Just how the awful ending came probably will never be known, but it is surmised that they had crossed the branch and reached the opposite bank when the horse which they were driving became frightened and backed into the stream. It is probable that the buggy was overturned by the swift current and the occupants thrown into the rushing water and on account of the dark ness were unable to extricate themselves or assist each other.

After leaving the home of Mrs. Davis the last time the young people were seen alive was about 11 o’clock, when they stopped at the home of Mrs. Fannie Furgerson and asked for some matches, stating that their lantern had gone out. The night was very dark, tempestuous, and a heavy rain was falling. The mother, who is a widow, thinking they had probably spent the night at Mr. Davis' home, on account of the inclement weather, made no search and gave no alarm. The next morning Capt. Henry made inquiry and found that they had left the party, and as they had not reached home, search was made and the bodies of the two unfortunate girls were found in the branch, both cold in death, one under a pile of driftwood, the other on top of it. The girls must have instinctively thrown their arms around one another, being washed by the strong current until they were drowned, then possibly being torn apart. The bodies were found by Holt Duncan.

The horse was found standing in the stream, the buggy shafts still attached to him, the bodies of the girls were found about fifty yards further down and the buggy still further down the stream.

The body of Albert, who is said to have been the Main Stay of the fatherless family, has not yet been found, although a large number of citizens have made a diligent search of the branch and also of Little Goose Creek, as far down as Hartsville.

It is reported that his hat and part of his coat were found near the scene of the drowning, and yesterday his raincoat was found in the “Long Hole,” which is about a mile above town, the coat being wrapped around a bush, the buttons being torn off, and one sleeve turned, showing that he made an attempt to get out.

The terrible occurrence has cast a gloom over the entire community and much sympathy is expressed for the broken hearted mother and the surviving members of the family. Page 189 SUPPLEMENT I The family came to this section from Putnam County about four years ago, and they are held in high esteem by all who know them. One of the girls, for [unreadable] has been housekeeper for Albert worked and land rented (from?) Capt. Henry. Fannie, the youngest of the dead girls, at one time attended school here, staying with the family of Rev. Dow Ensor, to whom the family is related.

The remains of the two girls were buried Thursday afternoon in the same grave in the Willow Grove Cemetery, funeral services being conducted by Rev. Jno. O. Ensor and Rev. J. T. Oakley. J. M Jared and Mr. Watts of Chestnut Mound, relatives of the family, arrived Thursday Morning. Rev. Jno. O. Obituary of Floyd Huddleston BUFFALO VALLEY - Graveside services for Floyd Huddleston, 81, will be conducted Thursday, October 9, 1180, at 9:30 a.m. at Crest Lawn Cemetery, with Rev. Robed H. Case officiating.

Mr. Huddleston died Tuesday night in the VA Hospital in Murfreesboro following a long illness. He was a native of Buffalo Valley, the son of the late Henry and Lucinda Tennessee Sextoa Huddleston. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard Pinkham, of Nashville. His body will lie in state at the Hooper and Huddleston Baxter Chapel after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Dispatch Today, June 24, 1980 Homecoming of Jared, Watts families well attended What could be better on a hot summer day than a cold glass of lemonade? Ask any member who attended the Jared Watts reunion on Saturday. June 14 at Baxter City Hall. The answers may all be different, but basically the same: meeting and greeting cousins, some for the first time in 5O years and some for the first time ever. This was the first reunion to be held and was brought together through letter writing tracing ancestors! Two brothers. Arch and Ben Jared, sons of John and Amanda Huddleston Jared of Putnam County and grandsons of Samuel Raulston and Mary Safrona Scruggs Jared, married sisters Margaret and Sarah Watts, daughters of John and Betty Young Watts who lived In the Buffalo Valley area of Putnam County. In 1905, Arch and Bert purchased property and moved to the Bryant Ridge near Baxter, where the family remained until World War II, when Sarah, the last of the four, died. Arch and Margaret were the parents of nine children (four children Lived to raise families) and moved to the Hartsville area of Smith County. The last of these brothers and sisters died about 1973. Bert and Sarah were the parents of six children. The last, Callie Jared Thompson died October 31. 1979 Bert and Arch were the fifth generation of John Jared a prosperous planter and Virginia wagon maker. The day was enjoyed by all who attended, and they had no problem deciding to meet again next year or Saturday the second week in June, same time, same place when even a greater number is expected to attend and no reunion would be (Note: Bottom line is Missing of this column) Page 192 SUPPLEMENT I Indian Mound The Tennessee Historical Society has a manuscript that states that Indian Mound was established as early as 1818 and that the first merchant, was James Williams son of Caleb Williams.

The first settlers were from North Carolina with grants for land for their services in the Revolutionary War. Others claimed land because they had settled there on ‘Dry Fork of North Cross Creek or on Honey Fork or Dick's Fork. Hezekiah Rorie acquired such land as early as 1806 and in 1808 Green Hill of Williamson County transferred 108 acres on a branch of North Cross Creek to Rorie. Other early settlers were Nathaniel Abney, Samuel Yarborough. William Curl, and John Wilson.

The town derives its nine, Indian Mound, because the region around it was once the “Happy Hunting Ground” for many Indians. Archaeologists in the late nineteen twenties and early thirties dug into the stone-lined graves and found many artifacts. These graves were on land now owned by Jerry Peacher.

In 1840 a group of covered wagons arrived with settlers. In 1843 a building of two stories was erected by the Masonic Lodge and that same year a Methodist church was established, using the same building. In 1891 Dr. West deeded land to the church and the Methodist church was built that is still in use. The first member recorded was William Barnette Lewis. The Cross Creek Baptist church was organized in 1851.

Indian Mound was just a few miles from Blue Spring Furnace, Rough and Ready Furnace, and Bellwood Furnace. The town continued to grow and a post office was built by 1860. A slave insurrection in Stewart County caused panic and the night raids began. Some people moved away.

During the Civil War many families suffered as they did all over the South. As the Confederate soldiers marched through, they were fed at the Baptist Church. An 1862 map gives the name Mount Indian.

The 1865 map has Indian Mound, the official name. But people of this locality still speak of “going to the Mound’ as they did in my grandmother's day. Ruby Tippit Peacher Indian Mound, Tennessee

Upperman High School science teacher Clara Jared lovingly leaches one of her last classes at the Baxter school, a ninth grade class. She will retire at the end of this year after more than 10 years of teaching. She was recently honored at Clara Jared Appreciation Day with a special "This Is Your Life” presentation, highlighting her dramatic teaching career, which spanned school history from the one-room school days when she rode a pony up to today. She taught In DeKalb County, at Silver Point, at Buffalo Valley and Gentry before coming to Upperman, and she remembers when her pay was $50 a month. She has taught many formal lessons, doctored many skinned knees, once rode in a boat to flooded Buffalo Valley School, played Hook at recess in winter and did the thousand other duties teachers must do. Newspaper article Tuesday Morning, July 1980 Freak earthquake is felt in Putnam Tremors were felt throughout Putnam, Jackson, Smith, Cumberland, White, DeKalb and Cannon counties Sunday afternoon as a result of an earthquake disturbance. No damage, however, was reported in these areas from the tremors, which hit at 1:58 p.m. An operator With the General Telephone Office in Cookeville reported equipment was moved around, although no damage or injuries resulted. “The tremors jarred the switchboard consoles here,” she said. "They looked like they were dancing on the floor.” A state Civil Defense director reported one mobile home unit was damaged.

“One trailer was shaken off its blocks in Grainger County, but that’s the most serious thing that was reported In Tennessee,” said Danny Daniel, of the Tennessee Civil Defense Office. Tremors were reported felt all across Tennessee. The quake was centered about 100 miles northeast of Lexington, Kentucky No Injuries were reported, and property damage was mostly minor. The Geological Survey said initial seismograph readings gave the tremor a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale, which is used to measure the Intensity of earthquakes. "It was a pretty good size earthquake for that area,” said

Don Finely, spokesman for the earthquake information service. It was the first widespread earthquake in memory in the region, which also extended through Illinois and Ohio and as far East as Pennsylvania Virginia and North Carolina. Police in Cincinnati said statues tumbled off the top of City Hall and damaged the sidewalk below. Stagehands preparing for a concert at the RKO Palace Theater in Columbus, Ohio, said a 2-foot piece of plaster crashed to the floor. “The whole floor started shaking,” said stagehand Joe McCutcheon, 31, “I thought it was just the after-effects of last night.”
