I begin this New Year with a deep sense of gratitude. I am grateful for the care and kindness that so many parishioners have shown me during the Christmas Season. I am blessed to be able to experience in so many different ways that God is Emmanuel. God is with us. The Love that was first revealed at Bethlehem more than 2000 years ago is present today in our faith community. I rejoice especially in your generosity this Christmas to the orphan children of Goala, Ethiopia. The donations to the angel tree will provide a much needed well for them. Water borne illnesses, such as cholera or diarrhea, are the leading cause of death in children under five years old in Ethiopia. And children in a rural area such as Goala are losing out on education and instead are spending their days walking long distances simply to collect water. Your generosity will make a huge difference in their lives.

Fr. Michael Hull is making a huge difference in my life as he is helping Father Lou and I with a busy Mass schedule and assisting us in our pastoral ministries. Fr. Michael Hull is Pastor of St. Ignatios of Antioch Melkite Church. He and his wife, Debbie, and their family hail from Tyler, Texas. Fr. Hull as a former psychiatric nurse has great experience as a counselor, especially with those who are struggling with grief or mental health issues. He is busy with his own Eastern Catholic parishioners but has been so very willing to help as a pastoral minister to our parishioners. I am happy to welcome him as a part-time member of our parish staff.

A few days ago we celebrated the beginning of a New Year and traditionally this is a good time to reassess where we are in our spiritual development and to reflect on how things might be different in the coming year. Today we hear the story of the Magi and the gifts they bring to Jesus. It is a good day to look at our own response to God. Stewardship is about making a response to God. And by now, I hope you know that I am not just talking about what goes into the offertory. That is a part of it and I am grateful for the generous response of so many at Christmas that allows us to move towards a balanced budget.

But Stewardship is about so much more. So, I am asking how well have we given ourselves to God in response to His wonderful gift to us? How readily and regularly have we spent time with God in prayer, in reading his Word, in spending an hour in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament? How readily and regularly have we given of ourselves and our time to someone who needs love and compassion? How readily have we shown that this King rules in our lives by letting Him make a difference when we are confused or lonely or devastated by what life throws at us? How readily have we given God, not our second best, not what’s simply ‘good enough’, but the best of what we have to offer?

The Magi went home by another road, we too can walk a different road this year, a road where we can make the King of kings the living, active center of everything we are and do. God gave Himself to us because He loves us. May His love be reflected in our lives as we worship Him with all that we have. That’s our gold, frankincense and myrrh.

On the Way Home: Three Epiphany Questions to ponder:

1. How did you first come to see Jesus? 2. How do you see Jesus now? 3. How do you show Jesus? Love is our Mission. If I answer those questions for myself the love of others manifests itself again and again. I first came to see Jesus through the concern and care of others: the devotion of a good teacher who spent time with me; the encouragement of my parents who first taught me about God’s love; a coach who saw more in me than my meager athletic abilities; a parish priest who trusted and respected my efforts; and friends who were ready to talk of deep things. Where do I see Jesus now? Of course in the worship of our faith community and in the words of Scripture – but I have to admit that too often I miss Him in both places. So I’m deeply grateful for the dedication of individuals who demonstrate in what they say and do the Jesus way of living in this world. Those who are not overwhelmed by this world’s sorrows, hurts and disappointments, but who live faithfully and hopefully, doing and being what they can do and be in His likeness. Strangely, they are often not even aware of their good witness as His disciples – they would not claim to be Christ-like. It is we who look on who see it. And then there’s my part, your part, in showing Jesus to others. This is the scary one; the $64 million question. It’s all too easy to be daunted by this. Our conviction must be that as Jesus has been manifested to us, he will be manifested to others. If our own stories of seeing him involves people one way or another showing us, then we must acknowledge that we ourselves can manifest Him also. Broken vessels we might be, but Christ still uses us; depends on us. Love is our Mission. Your part, my part is – to speak, to care, to pray, to love as one who has seen Christ and recognized him. As good stewards of His grace in this New Year that is our offering and our mission.
