It’s that time of year again when ice is melted down the world over and we have a moment to take stock of another bumper season.

Firstly, well done to all the 2018-2019 world champions and the first winners.

There are exciting times ahead, as we seek to grow our sport. The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing, in 2022 are now only two and a half years away and planning is well underway.

In the past months, we have begun helping our friends in China develop curling so that there is a lasting legacy for our sport once the Games have been played – more on that later in the newsletter.

There is no doubt that curling continues to grow and in this newsletter, you can read about pioneering Member Associations taking the game to new territories and about our ever increasing staff team.

All in all, our sport remains in good health and with that in mind, I hope you enjoy reading this edition.

Creating a legacy for curling in China

Members of the World Curling Federation, and its partner the World Academy of Sport, the Chinese Curling Association and the organising committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, plus other stakeholders gathered at Beijing’s Shougang Park in April for the first Chinese Curling Association workshop of its kind.

The workshop focused on how to develop curling, and maximise its exposure, in China in the coming years leading up to the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2022. The workshop sought to look at ways to increase participation and to improve the quality of the game from the grassroots level to elite curling. Also, it was arranged to play a part in China’s drive to have 300 million people involved in winter sports by the time the Games come around.

New programmes and activities are already underway through governmental, education and various sport organisations to familiarise Chinese people with curling. Particular focus is being placed on getting the sport into schools across China and opening more dedicated curling facilities.

Member Associations spotlight Not many teams would succeed in beating one of the top outfits from the or three times in a best-of-five series and, particularly on away ice. But, until now, through the Americas zone qualification system, that has been the only route to participation in the World Curling Championships for the Brazilian federation.

Now, the new World Qualification Event has changed all that, and the Brazilians have a new opportunity, which in the past season they grabbed with both hands.

Not only did both their women and men record their first-ever world-level wins in Naseby, in the new qualification event, the women’s team of Anna Shibuya, Luciana Barrella, Alessandro Barros and Debora Monteiro, supported by coach Barbara Zbeetnoff, finished fourth overall with three wins – over , and the hosts New Zealand.

The men’s only win came against and they finished in sixth-place.

Now, with these results, ’s curlers are even more enthusiastic.
