River Blvd. New Pastors Service Independence, MO 64050 816-833-1000 I felt very fortunate to be able to preside at the setting apart service for Www.cofchrist.org Brian Tubbesing and my husband, Brad Johnson, as they officially joined World Church the Olathe pastorate. The service was on February 7th with a theme Mission Statement “Glimpse Jesus’ Glory”. As we ended the season after the Epiphany and We proclaim Jesus Christ and began to prepare for the journey of Lent, this was the Sunday that marked Promote Communities of Joy, Hope, Love and Peace that change. It was a weekend packed with dance classes from profession- als around the US and a competition on Saturday night. She was awarded a place on the Adrenaline Crew team for which she received a scholarship of 50% off her Nation- als competition fee and $200 toward a class this summer. She is in four group dances and one solo. Reese was recently diagnosed with scoliosis and wears a back brace for a minimum of 15 hours a day. Luckily dance is helping keep her back flexible and

WOW! The Cantata was COOL!! The kids really knew the songs and sang their little hearts out. Foster Lundy was a hit as he The Tech Guys helped Anthony Ferguson and Reese Beckman stay cool in the Bryan Talcott Ben Bauman furnace. Family Work Day at OLATHE—Saturday, April 23 Spring has sprung and it is time for Spring Cleaning There are nooks to be cleaned and crannies to be scrubbed. The church needs to be spruced up...so bring your families and cleaning supplies to the church on Saturday , April 23rd. We’ll begin at 8:00 a.m. and wrap up around noon. If you are not able to be there on the 23rd see Mark Binns for a list of jobs that can be done on your schedule. 7 Cares and Concerns Updates Edie Flinn: On December 7th, Edie Flinn awoke unable to stand or walk without assistance and was taken to the emergency room at Overland Park Regional. For about two months preceding this she experienced tingling in her fingertips and impairment of her fine motor skills. They immediately diagnosed a severe UTI and began treat- ment. She underwent many other tests and thru an MRI a crushed disc in her neck was discovered. Her neurosur- geon scheduled her for surgery and the disc was removed and replaced by a wire cage. No permanent damage done! However, she was in bed for over a week and when she left the hospital had lost about 75% of her func- tion. She couldn't hold a fork or get out of a chair without assistance and “left a detailed map of her meal on her shirt”. We are told it may take up to a year for her to get full function back in all her extremities. She spent about 6 weeks in rehab and when she plateaued in her therapy was moved into the Care Center (Lakeview Village). Shortly after her move to the Care Center the Norovirus struck...she did get sick, and the en- tire Care Center and Lakeview Village went on lockdown for about a month. During this winter of her discontent, she has been able to regain more of her strength and is making great strides now! We met with her care team today and our goal is for her to focus her therapy on independent living tasks. Edie has decided to move from her current "cottage apartment" to an apartment in the Heritage building sometime in April. She will still be living independently but will have easier access to all the amenities... dining room, events, etc. She no longer has her cell phone but can currently be reached at 913-563-4893. If no one an- swers, she's out of her room. Just call back later. This has been quite a rough and humbling winter for Edie. She has appreciated all the cards, calls, and prayers. She was also appreciative of not being overwhelmed with visitors. She was so weak and needing to heal. She is much more accepting of her limits now and very positive about moving to her new apartment! Once she feels she has the stamina, I will get her back to church. I'll keep you posted on her progress and move. Once moved, her new address will be: 9100 Park Place, Apt 405B Lenexa, KS 66215. Her home phone number will remain the same: 913-441-2804. Please continue to keep Edie in your thoughts and prayers. Charlotte Meyers (Edie’s daughter) Isabelle Fisher: A few months ago Isabelle Fisher (June Johnson and Jeanne Mann’s mother) took a tumble and broke her hip. After a successful surgery she is recovering nicely and has retained her spirit of determination and happiness. Continued prayers are appreciated. George Robertson: On February 4th George had a successful total hip replacement. He spent two week in a rehab facility where they really worked him over with some intensive physical and occupa- tional therapy. Physical therapy was continued on an outpatient basis and has just been completed. He is learning to walk in a new way and FINALLY can drive again. Please keep George in your prayers as he continues to heal over the next several months.

On Friday, March 18th, Keith Alberding passed away after a bout with cancer. Please keep his wife, Judi and the family in your thoughts and prayers.

Sacrament of Baby Blessing On Sunday, April 3rd Sutton Franklin, Emily Klontz, and Cailyn Fogarty will be blessed.

On Sunday, April 24th Layla Gill and Lauren Winters will blessed.

Please join their families for these special services and keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare for this sacrament.

Our congregation is so blessed to have all these new babies. 8 Building Committee Summary—2015

If I Had a Hammer…I’d Hammer in the Morning.. A summary of building committee activity in 2015

Indeed, the building committee had a very busy year in 2015. It’s the building committee’s role to initiate as well as to provide oversight to all church building and grounds projects.

Their biggest challenge is keeping up with a church building that is nearing 40 years old. It has been used heavily in those years, not only by our congregation, but also a pre-school, and the community.

According to Mark Binns, Building Committee Chair, 2015 achievements that have been completed or are cur- rently active and nearing completion include:

 Custom-made, heavy duty duct work grilles were installed in the gym  Purchased a new commercial vacuum cleaner for use in the building  Purchased a dedicated computer for audio-visual presentations  Set up a smartphone remote monitoring app for managing temperature and humidity in the building  Installed a new custom Olathe Community of Christ sign  New electrical circuit installed to power the sign, after original line failed due to damage/deterioration. This involved hiring a road boring crew to run the line under the entry drive to the sign.  Replaced 2 of 4 HVAC rooftop units for the sanctuary  Organized two Work Days: cleanup, weeding, trimming the landscaping; cleanup and organization of stor- age and classroom areas  Renegotiated the Lawn Care Contract: no increase in price last two years  Hired a tree company to trim all tree canopies and remove stumps from landscaping

The committee provided oversight to:  Volunteers’ construction of a wood floor platform expansion providing space for the new Baby Grand piano.  Volunteers’ remodeling of the small Library and Pastors offices by removing the dividing wall and adding a bank of lights the space now is much more useable. The relocated, solid oak library bookcases Jim Ber- baum crafted years ago continue to highlight this office.

The Building Committee is still considering their goals for 2016. Some of the projects below were considered last year. Some rejected. Others may make the goals list this year:

 Re-floor the rostrum (due to rostrum concrete cracks, project will not be implemented in future)  Electrical energy audit, and re-fitting two outdoor area lights with LED kits  Replacement of several HVAC thermostats in the building  Possible new, dedicated computer and upgraded software for building security system  Replacement of two remaining rooftop HVAC units for the sanctuary

Thank you to the members of the building committee for their commitment to our church facility and to the mem- bers of the Olathe Community of Christ congregation for your financial gifts that funded the completed projects.

Your continued giving helps accomplish our 2016 projects. It also enables our building to serve as an expression of Christ’s mission and an invitation to our neighbors and our community. Now, behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth among the chil- dren of men. Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind, and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day; Therefore, if ye have desires to serve God, ye are called to the work, for behold, the field is Kirtland Temple white already to harvest, and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perish not, but bringeth sal- vation to his soul; and faith, hope, charity, and love, with an eye single to the glory of God, qualifies him for the work. Remember, faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, brotherly kindness, godliness, char- ity, humility, diligence. Ask and ye shall receive, knock and it shall be opened unto you, Amen Plano, Illinois Our Gracious Redeemer of Israel, We humbly come before you now thanking you and praising you for our heritage in this church known today as the Community of Christ. We marvel at the simple yet deep and abiding faith of Joseph Smith, Jr., as he earnestly prayed to receive your Spiritual direction in his life. His testimonies of the Spiritual personages revealing your Navoo Homestead will to him; the location and purpose of the Book of Mormon; the restoring of the Aaronic and Melchisedec Priesthood; the ordinances of the church and the formation of the Church of Christ on April 6, 1830, serve as firm foundation of your continued revelation to us today. We ask a special blessing for all of the souls who have gone before us and their descendants who have embraced Zionic community in Palmyra, New York, Kirtland, Ohio, Independence, Far West and Haun's Mill, Missouri, Amboy and Plano, Illinois and Lamoni, Iowa, the isles of the sea and continents afar. Only you know the covenant Mansion House in of these, your people, that endowed them to endure all manner of sacrifice to journey in your steps. May we, in all faith believing, accept this mantel as a blessing and chal- lenge in these days in which we live. May we hold tight to your everlasting love, your promises of everlasting salvation and eternal life. Help us to see with Spiritual eyes how to live in Zionic community and how to respond gen- erously and with open hearts to your abundant blessings. May our holy covenant with you continue to be revealed that we will be endowed with the Fredrick Madison Smith power of your Spirit to bring others your gospel light of salvation.
