Seeschlachten im Atlantik (Zusammenfassung) U-Boot-Krieg (aus Wikipedia) 07_48/U 995 vom Typ VII C/41, der meistgebauten U-Boot-Klasse im Zweiten Weltkrieg Als U-Boot-Krieg (auch "Unterseebootkrieg") werden Kampfhandlungen zur See bezeichnet, bei denen U-Boote eingesetzt werden, um feindliche Kriegs- und Frachtschiffe zu versenken. Die Bezeichnung "uneingeschränkter U-Boot-Krieg" wird verwendet, wenn Schiffe ohne vorherige Warnung angegriffen werden. Der Einsatz von U-Booten wandelte sich im Laufe der Zeit vom taktischen Blockadebrecher zum strategischen Blockademittel im Rahmen eines Handelskrieges. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg änderte sich die grundsätzliche Einsatzdoktrin durch die Entwicklung von Raketen tragenden Atom- U-Booten, die als Träger von Kernwaffen eine permanente Bedrohung über den maritimen Bereich hinaus darstellen. Im Gegensatz zum Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg fand hier keine völkerrechtliche Weiterentwicklung zum Einsatz von U-Booten statt. Der Begriff wird besonders auf den Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bezogen. Hierbei sind auch völkerrechtliche Rahmenbedingungen von Bedeutung. Anfänge Während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges wurden 1864 mehrere handgetriebene U-Boote gebaut. Am 17. Februar 1864 versenkte die C.S.S. H. L. Hunley durch eine Sprengladung das Kriegsschiff USS Housatonic der Nordstaaten. Es gab 5 Tote auf dem versenkten Schiff. Die Hunley gilt somit als erstes U-Boot der Welt, das ein anderes Schiff zerstört hat. Das U-Boot wurde allerdings bei dem Angriff auf die Housatonic durch die Detonation schwer beschädigt und sank, wobei auch seine achtköpfige Besatzung getötet wurde. Auftrag der Hunley war die Brechung der Blockade des Südstaatenhafens Charleston durch die Nordstaaten. Erster Weltkrieg Die technische Entwicklung der U-Boote bis zum Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges beschreibt ein Boot, das durch Dampf-, Benzin-, Diesel- oder Petroleummaschinen über Wasser und durch batteriegetriebene Elektromotoren unter Wasser angetrieben wurde. -

Marshall U. Beebe, Captain, USN No Picture Available
Officer of Fighter Squadron 17, a squadron of F6F Hellcats of Air Group 17, based on the USS Hornet, in the Pacific. He remained in that command until June 1945, during which period he participated in the first Navy raids on Tokyo in February 1945 and was personally credited with 10 1/2 Japanese planes. He was awarded the Navy Cross for "extraordinary heroism as a Pilot and Flight Loader in Fighting Squadron 17 ...in the vicinity of Southern Kyushu, No picture available Japan, on March 18, 1945...where he shot down five planes of twenty-five destroyed by his flight of 16 aircraft... also accounted for two aircraft destroyed on the ground, probably destroyed another in the air and damaged two others...” From June 1945 until June 1946 he again served in the Navy Department, this time in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, where he was assigned to Military Requirements, Armament Desk, and for a year thereafter he was a student at the General Line School, Newport, Rhode Island. In July 1947 he reported to the USS Badoeng Marshall U. Beebe, Captain, USN Strait, in which he served as Air Officer until March 1948. (Naval Aviator Number 5534) He then became Aide and Flag Lieutenant on the Staff of Admiral Arthur W. Radford, USN, then Vice Chief of Naval Marshall Ulrich Beebe was born in Anaheim, California, Operations, and later Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet on August 6, 1913, son of Marshall E. and Anna M, (Ulrich) Beebe. He attended Occidental College, majoring in math- In July 1950 he reported to Commander Air Force, ematics and physics, and graduated with a degree of Bachelor Pacific as Prospective Commander of Carrier Air Group 5, of Arts in 1935. -

December 2003 THE JERSEYMAN To our United States Armed Forces From the volunteers of USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62) Happy Holidays, Happy New Year, and Thank You for your service God Bless America 2 THE JERSEYMAN DECEMBER 2003 HISTORY OF U.S.S. NEW JERSEY ... “TYPHOON COBRA,” DECEMBER 18, 1944 - Thousands of US sailors serving aboard the 130 plus ships of Task Force 38, rode out a terrible storm on December 18, 1944, and it is sadly remembered today as “Typhoon Cobra.” This storm resulted in 3 capsized destroyers, the loss of 790 men, the total destruction of 146 badly needed combat aircraft, and brought crippling dam- age to many ships. Especially hard hit were the CVL’s (Light Aircraft Carriers,) and CVE’s (Escort Carriers.) At the time, USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62) was serving as fleet flagship for Task Force 38, and was under the command of Admiral William “Bull” Halsey. Today, as The Jerseyman commemorates this tragic World War 2 event, we are privileged to include stories of the storm as it was experienced by many of the sailors who were there. During our typhoon research, we were also fortunate to have had contact with Mr. Richard A. Strand, brother of lost USS SPENCE crewman Robert L. Strand. Mr. Strand has compiled an extensive amount of material about his brother’s ship. He graciously shared this information with The Jerseyman, and for many years, has offered his efforts at no cost, to the families of USS SPENCE crewmen. Along with the USS SPENCE’s history, his research contains many operating charts for the ship, and an excerpt from the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC), that USS SPENCE had received as part of Arleigh Burke’s famous “Little Beaver” Destroyer Squadron (DesRon) 23. -

(See page 22) LOOKING BACK... 2nd Quarter 2011 "Rest well, yet sleep lightly and hear the call, if again sounded, to provide firepower for freedom…” THE JERSEYMAN 9 Years - Nr. 70 World War II Memorial Washington, D.C. 2 THE JERSEYMAN LOOKING BACK… May 23, 1943 World War II commissioning of the USS New Jersey, May 23, 1943. My mother is the taller of the two uniformed WAVE personnel, dead center on the fantail, and facing the camera. Mom is now 93 years old, and she will be 94 in August. She is very cognizant of the events and details of her assignment, and which happened before she married. She is very proud of her service to her country as a WAVE. Although she would have liked to stay in the navy, she had to leave the service in August 1945, as World War II ended, because even though she had later married she was pregnant with my oldest brother. At that time, WAVES would not permit expectant mothers to remain on active duty, married or not. I think a lot has probably changed in the navy since then. David Jennings Midlothian, Virginia Catherine DeSales Corbett Jennings, was one of two waves that were assigned to USS New Jersey for 1 month before the ship was commissioned. Once the ship was commissioned on 23 May 1943, the WAVES were reassigned back to their original duty station at BUPERS (Bureau of Naval Personnel) in Washington, D.C. -

I have travelled a good deal in Concord; and every where, in shops, and offices, and fields, the inhabitants have appeared to me to be doing penance in a thousand remarkable ways. WORLD WAR II WALL OF HONOR WINCHESTER WALL OF HONOR – Participating in the national effort of the Spirit of ’45 to photo-document the veterans of WWII, Winchester’s World War II 75th Anniversary Committee has compiled a Winchester Wall of Honor. Shown below is the collection to date. Residents and veterans’ families are invited and encouraged to contribute photos of veterans who enlisted from Winchester for both the local and national walls. Although photographs of service men and women in uniform were preferred, many school photographs and a few of men in the uniforms of the Fire Department have been used with an effort to show the men and women as close to the age of enlistment as possible. The project, though designed for the 75th Anniversary of WWII, is still open to the contribution of further photographs, all to be kept in the Winchester Archival Center, which also has a database of all known veterans who enlisted from Winchester.
