Dear Parents of Lower School Boys From: Mrs G Cooper - Librarian 3 February 2012 Dear parents Joint Abingdon Author Visit The Two Steves Each year Abingdon School, the School of St Helen & St Katharine and Our Lady’s Abingdon invite an author to talk to children from local schools. This year, Abingdon School is hosting the event and we have not one, but two authors: Steve Barlow and Steve Skidmore, better known as The Two Steves. They will be visiting on Thursday 9 February to talk about their books and writing. All 1st & 2nd years will have the opportunity to hear these brilliantly entertaining and inspiring writers speak. As ex-teachers, they know how to entertain whilst encouraging a love of reading and writing. Visit their website at www.the2steves.net/ to read more about them. In particular, they will be talking about three of their most popular series: the Challenger series which features Daredevil teen hero Luke Challenger and the iHorror and iHero series which are interactive stories where the reader is the Hero/Hunter and decides what is going to happen in the story. If you would like your son to purchase any of The Two Steves’ books and have them signed and charged to the bill, please complete the form below and either email it back to me at [email protected] or return it via your son by Wed 8 February. • ABSTRACT Augustinian Auden: the Influence of Augustine of Hippo on W. H. Auden Stephen J. Schuler, Ph.D. Mentor: Richard Rankin
ABSTRACT Augustinian Auden: The Influence of Augustine of Hippo on W. H. Auden Stephen J. Schuler, Ph.D. Mentor: Richard Rankin Russell, Ph.D. It is widely acknowledged that W. H. Auden became a Christian in about 1940, but relatively little critical attention has been paid to Auden‟s theology, much less to the particular theological sources of Auden‟s faith. Auden read widely in theology, and one of his earliest and most important theological influences on his poetry and prose is Saint Augustine of Hippo. This dissertation explains the Augustinian origin of several crucial but often misunderstood features of Auden‟s work. They are, briefly, the nature of evil as privation of good; the affirmation of all existence, and especially the physical world and the human body, as intrinsically good; the difficult aspiration to the fusion of eros and agape in the concept of Christian charity; and the status of poetry as subject to both aesthetic and moral criteria. Auden had already been attracted to similar ideas in Lawrence, Blake, Freud, and Marx, but those thinkers‟ common insistence on the importance of physical existence took on new significance with Auden‟s acceptance of the Incarnation as an historical reality. For both Auden and Augustine, the Incarnation was proof that the physical world is redeemable. Auden recognized that if neither the physical world nor the human body are intrinsically evil, then the physical desires of the body, such as eros, the self-interested survival instinct, cannot in themselves be intrinsically evil. The conflict between eros and agape, or altruistic love, is not a Manichean struggle of darkness against light, but a struggle for appropriate placement in a hierarchy of values, and Auden derived several ideas about Christian charity from Augustine.

  • International Year of the Mountains 2002
INDEX TO THE JOURNALS OF THE MOUNTAIN CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA 1979 to 2000 (volumes 82-103) This third Journal Index of the Mountain Club of South Africa is dedicated to the International Year of the Mountains 2002. Mountains are fragile ecosystems which are globally important as water towers of the earth, repositories of rich biological diversity, popular destinations for recreation and tourism and areas of important cultural heritage. They provide a direct life-support base for about 10% of humankind. They also provide 30-60% of downstream fresh water in humid areas and up to 70-95% in semi-arid to arid environments. Rapid and growing awareness of the importance of mountain areas in recent years prompted the United Nations General Assembly in November 1998 to declare 2002 as the International Year of Mountains. The International Year of Mountains promoted the conservation and sustainable development of mountain regions, aiming to ensure the well-being of both mountain inhabitants (whose livelihoods, cultural heritage, opportunities and overall well-being are at stake) and lowland communities. How to use this Index The methodology used for compiling this index follows that used for the two previous indices i.e. Entries appear in alphabetical sequence under authors’ names as well as subject headings. Each article is indexed as a whole with added entries where necessary. Each article is entered under the most specific heading that fits the whole article e.g. an article about AFRICA FACE, Table Mt. , is entered under AFRICA FACE, Table Mt. , not under TABLE Mt. If a considerable part of an article on a region is devoted to a specific peak in that region, an additional entry is made under the name of that peak.

  • A Holmes and Doyle Bibliography
A Holmes and Doyle Bibliography Volume 7 Audio/Visual Materials Alphabetical Listing Compiled by Timothy J. Johnson Minneapolis High Coffee Press 2018 A Holmes & Doyle Bibliography Vol. 7, Audio/Visual Materials, Alphabetical Listing INTRODUCTION This bibliography is a work in progress. It attempts to update Ronald B. De Waal’s comprehensive bibliography, The Universal Sherlock Holmes, but does not claim to be exhaustive in content. New works are continually discovered and added to this bibliography. Readers and researchers are invited to suggest additional content. This volume contains an alphabetical listing of audio-visual materials. Coverage of this material begins around 1994, the final year covered by De Waal's bibliography, but may not yet be totally up-to-date (given the ongoing nature of this bibliography). It is hoped that other titles will be added at a later date. The first volume in this supplement focuses on monographic and serial titles, arranged alphabetically by author or main entry. The second volume presents the exact same information arranged by subject. The third volume focuses on the periodical literature of Doyle and Holmes, listing individual articles alphabetically. The fourth volume includes "core" or "primary" citations from the periodical literature. The fifth volume includes "passing" or "secondary" references to Doyle or Holmes in the periodical literature. The sixth volume organizes the periodical literature according to De Waal's original categories. As the bibliography expands, additional annotations will be provided in order to give the researcher a better idea on the exact Holmesian or Doylean reference contained in each article. The compiler wishes to thank Peter E.

  • 1 the Ctp Graduate Faculty Film Forum the Other
THE CTP GRADUATE FACULTY FILM FORUM THE OTHER: A THEME EXPLORED IN TWO FILMS, COME AND SEE AND ONCE WERE WARRIORS By Leah Lucas, March 2002 INTRODUCTION My journey into this theme of ‘the other’ began with my choosing of two foreign films to explore. Both of these films, one from Russia and one from New Zealand are quite unlike the mainstream Hollywood thrillers. They are about war and family, both experiences depicted with a raw intensity that goes right into the body. They are not easy films to view, but I believe worthy, providing valuable thoughts and responses for lively discussion. Elem Klimov, the Russian director of ‘Come and See’ wanted his film to appear so vividly real, to seem like a documentary. Klimov was a very young boy during World War Two when he had to flee the Volga River to reach the Urals with his mother and sisters. The Germans were on the attack and had just bombed the nearby petroleum plant. The flammable petroleum spread over the river boiling the water in a raging inferno. All the mothers heaped coats and blankets upon the children along with their own bodies to protect them from the flames. Elem, being a curious boy peaked out from under his mother’s body to gaze upon a scene of hell. He describes how his very skin could sense the apocalyptic destruction. As a filmmaker he felt compelled to give genuine expression to the emotional complexities experienced from the agony of war. The original title of his film was KILL HITLER, referring not just to Hitler the man but also to the darkness within each of us.
