ABSTRACT Augustinian Auden: the Influence of Augustine of Hippo on W. H. Auden Stephen J. Schuler, Ph.D. Mentor: Richard Rankin ABSTRACT Augustinian Auden: The Influence of Augustine of Hippo on W. H. Auden Stephen J. Schuler, Ph.D. Mentor: Richard Rankin Russell, Ph.D. It is widely acknowledged that W. H. Auden became a Christian in about 1940, but relatively little critical attention has been paid to Auden‟s theology, much less to the particular theological sources of Auden‟s faith. Auden read widely in theology, and one of his earliest and most important theological influences on his poetry and prose is Saint Augustine of Hippo. This dissertation explains the Augustinian origin of several crucial but often misunderstood features of Auden‟s work. They are, briefly, the nature of evil as privation of good; the affirmation of all existence, and especially the physical world and the human body, as intrinsically good; the difficult aspiration to the fusion of eros and agape in the concept of Christian charity; and the status of poetry as subject to both aesthetic and moral criteria. Auden had already been attracted to similar ideas in Lawrence, Blake, Freud, and Marx, but those thinkers‟ common insistence on the importance of physical existence took on new significance with Auden‟s acceptance of the Incarnation as an historical reality. For both Auden and Augustine, the Incarnation was proof that the physical world is redeemable. Auden recognized that if neither the physical world nor the human body are intrinsically evil, then the physical desires of the body, such as eros, the self-interested survival instinct, cannot in themselves be intrinsically evil. The conflict between eros and agape, or altruistic love, is not a Manichean struggle of darkness against light, but a struggle for appropriate placement in a hierarchy of values, and Auden derived several ideas about Christian charity from Augustine. Augustine‟s influence was largely conscious on Auden‟s part, though it was often indirect as well. Auden absorbed important Augustinian ideas through modern sources such as Charles Williams, Charles Norris Cochrane, and Denis de Rougemont, although he was himself an observant and incisive reader of Augustine‟s major works, especially the Confessions. This dissertation demonstrates that the works and ideas of Augustine are a deep and significant influence on Auden‟s prose and poetry, and especially on his long poems. Auden was significantly influenced by the work and thought of Saint Augustine of Hippo, especially in the poetry and prose that Auden wrote after he began his return to Christianity in the late 1930s. Because this is a study of influence, it will be necessary to first spend some time outlining particular aspects of Augustine‟s theology before I can identify those ideas in Auden‟s works, but as the work progresses, my discussions of Augustine‟s thought will become more concise. Also, because Augustine‟s influence does not appear in equal measure in all parts of Auden‟s corpus, I have focused mainly on those works whose content most strongly reveals Augustinian ideas, particularly Auden‟s long poems of the 1940s. Throughout the process of writing this work, I have become convinced that a recognition of certain key Augustinian ideas in a few of Auden‟s works enables a reader to better understand Auden‟s other works. Among these key works are “The Prolific and the Devourer,” “New Year Letter,” “For the Time Being,” “The Sea and the Mirror,” The Dyer’s Hand, and “Horae Canonicae.” It is to these works that this dissertation repeatedly turns, first to find the influence of Augustine, but also for guidance in seeking to elucidate Auden‟s reliance on Augustine in his other works. Also, I should here explain my approach to certain technical matters in use of sources. First, in referring to the works of both Auden and Augustine, I will give the title that will be most familiar to readers (e.g. The City of God rather than Concerning the City of God against the Pagans). Since the MLA no longer requires square brackets around ellipses within quotations, I have omitted them; when an ellipsis appears within a vi quotation, the reader may assume that material has been omitted from the quotation for purposes of clarity and brevity. Also, Auden frequently used italics in his works, so unless otherwise noted, all italics within quotations are original to the source. Finally, both Auden and Augustine are clear writers on the whole, so where possible I prefer to quote them rather than summarize them. This article presents considerations of the unique possibilities afforded by the idea of spiritual ecology. On one hand, these possibilities include problematic tendencies in some strands of contemporary spirituality, including anti-intellectualism, a lack of sociopolitical engagement, and complicity in a sense of happiness that is captured by capitalist enclosures and consumerist desires. On the other hand, spiritual ecology promises to involve an existential commitment to solidarity with nonhumans, and it gestures toward ways of knowing and interacting that are more inclusive than what is typically conveyed by the term “religion.” Much work on spiritual ecology is broadly pluralistic, leaving open the question of how to discern the difference between better and worse forms of spiritual ecology. This article affirms that pluralism while also distinguishing between the anti-intellectual, individualistic, and capitalistic possibilities of spiritual ecology from varieties of spiritual ecology that are on the way to what can be described as ecological existentialism or coexistentialism.     AGAPE AND EROS A. S. DEWDNEY O one can read Bishop Nygren's great work Agape and Eros without Ngratitude and much delight. This is one of those monumental works of which only a very few are produced in any generation and which help to clarify and mould the thinking of men everywhere. Agape and Eros are words which are here to stay in our theological vocabulary because they express the two great motifs underlying the more inclusive word "love". They enable us to distinguish these elements and to handle them with more precision and understanding of what they mean. All preachers and theologians have suffered in the past in attempting to clarify what is involved in the Christian idea of love, whether it is the love of God to man, of man to God, of man to his neighbour, or the meaning and place to be given to self-love. We now have a clear word for two aspects of what are commonly called love, and for this we must be forever indebted to Bishop Nygren's clear and searching analysis. He has helped us to resolve much of this ambiguity. Nygren distinguishes two types of love. One is the love of desire. It is the love which values and seeks to possess some good in its object. It is motivated by that good. We love that which is good, that is, that which is good for us. Such a love is self-centred. However lofty the object on which it places its love, essentially it sees that object as a good to be possessed.

This is well reflected in the fact that the whole debate about egoism and altruism is frequently conceptualized as being about the so-called paradox of altruism. The obvious suggestion here is that the cards are so heavily stacked against altruism that the easiest way to resolve the controversy would be to simply agree that altruism does not exist at all. In their book Unto Others, the philosopher Elliott Sober and the biologist David Sloan Wilson make a strong effort to swim against this current. The battle between altruism and egoism is fought on two separate fronts: in evolutionary biology and in psychology. The book covers both aspects of the debate: the first part deals with biology, the second part with psychology.     Issue 70: Dante's Guide to Heaven and Hell Dante and the Divine Comedy: Did You Know? What a famous painting suggests about Dante's life, legend, and legacy. Big Man in the Cosmos A giant in the world of which he wrote, laurel-crowned Dante stands holding his Divine Comedy open to the first lines: "Midway this way of life we're bound upon, / I woke to find myself in a dark wood, / Where the right road was wholly lost and gone." Of course, his copy reads in Italian. Dante was the first major writer in Christendom to pen lofty literature in everyday language rather than in formal Latin. Coming 'Round the Mountain Behind Dante sits multi-tiered Mount Purgatory. An angel guards the gate, which stands atop three steps: white marble for confession, cracked black stone for contrition, and red porphyry for Christ's blood sacrifice. With his sword, the angel marks each penitent's forehead with seven p's (from Latin peccatum, "sin") for the Seven Deadly Sins. When these wounds are washed away by penance, the soul may enter earthly paradise at the mountain's summit. Starry Heights In Paradiso, the third section of the Comedy, Dante visits the planets and constellations where blessed souls dwell. The celestial spheres look vague in this painting, but Dante had great interest in astronomy. One of his astronomical references still puzzles scholars. He notes "four stars, the same / The first men saw, and since, no living eye" (Purgatorio, I.23-24), apparently in reference to the Southern Cross. But that constellation was last visible at Dante's latitude (thanks to the earth's wobbly axis) in 3000 B.C., and no one else wrote about it in Europe until after Amerigo Vespucci's voyage in 1501.
