INDEX TO THE JOURNALS OF THE MOUNTAIN CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA 1979 to 2000 (volumes 82-103) This third Journal Index of the Mountain Club of South Africa is dedicated to the International Year of the Mountains 2002. Mountains are fragile ecosystems which are globally important as water towers of the earth, repositories of rich biological diversity, popular destinations for recreation and tourism and areas of important cultural heritage. They provide a direct life-support base for about 10% of humankind. They also provide 30-60% of downstream fresh water in humid areas and up to 70-95% in semi-arid to arid environments. Rapid and growing awareness of the importance of mountain areas in recent years prompted the United Nations General Assembly in November 1998 to declare 2002 as the International Year of Mountains. The International Year of Mountains promoted the conservation and sustainable development of mountain regions, aiming to ensure the well-being of both mountain inhabitants (whose livelihoods, cultural heritage, opportunities and overall well-being are at stake) and lowland communities. How to use this Index The methodology used for compiling this index follows that used for the two previous indices i.e. Entries appear in alphabetical sequence under authors’ names as well as subject headings. Each article is indexed as a whole with added entries where necessary. Each article is entered under the most specific heading that fits the whole article e.g. an article about AFRICA FACE, Table Mt. , is entered under AFRICA FACE, Table Mt. , not under TABLE Mt. If a considerable part of an article on a region is devoted to a specific peak in that region, an additional entry is made under the name of that peak. Always look first under the name of the specific area, route, peak, etc. required. If the information required is not found in articles which deal specifically with that area, it may be found in articles listed under the wider area of which this forms part, e.g. additional information about AFRICA FACE may be contained in an article that deals with TABLE Mt. comprehensively. Always look through the “see also” references listed after the articles in case the information required may have been entered under a more specific heading. Sub-headings have been limited to as few as possible. Routes on Table Mountain are entered under their individual names, e.g. AFRICA FACE, Table Mt. Routes on other peaks and mountains will be found under the name of the peak or mountain. Illustrations: Photographs that illustrate articles are not given separate entries, but are indicated in the entries for articles as photo(s.) or illus.(trs.) (illustration(s)). If a specific peak appears prominently on a photograph of a mountain range or neighbouring peak, an added entry is made under the name of that peak, e.g. if Lion’s Head appears very prominently on a photograph illustrating an article about Table Mt., the photograph is indicated as “photo.” or “illus.” in the entry for Table Mt. and an added entry is made under LION’S HEAD “Illustrations”. If a peak or mountain, which is not given an added entry, appears prominently on a photograph, this is entered under the sub-heading “Illustrations” . All photographs that do not illustrate articles are entered under the sub-heading “Illustrations”. Maps: Apart from being mentioned in the collation of articles that they illustrate, maps are also grouped under geographical area in a special list at the end of the Index. If a map of a specific mountain is sought it may be found in the general index under the name of that mountain, but see also the list of maps under the name of the province or country. Mountain Club of S.A. The style of the previous indices was followed and therefore many subjects are covered in this wide category, some in subheadings under specific Sections. It is therefore advisable to consult this heading. Routine matters , such as annual reports, are indexed analytically only for references to specific subjects and persons, most frequently under Mountain Club of S.A. Reviews are listed under the headings “BOOKS, Reviews ”. Poems are listed under the heading “POEMS ”. Plants are entered under their botanical species’ names, with reference to common names. Changes in the names of countries, provinces, towns, institutions and in spelling. During the period covered by this Index, many important name changes occurred in Southern Africa and the process continues (e.g. South West Africa became Namibia, South Africa was demarcated into new provinces with new names in 1994 and the names of towns are changing.) The new names were used for indexing even though the older articles still use the old names. The spelling of Zulu names in the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg is in some cases still uncertain.
