The introduction presents the background to Bennett’s novella, with special emphasis on the monarchist and anti-monarchist trends in Britain, as well as on the increased popularity of the monarchy as a result of intensive media coverage. The first part also draws the connection between the media craze which exposes the private side of the royalty and Bennett’s disclosure of the humanity of Queen Elizabeth II through the mediation of the world of literature instead of that of tabloids or television. -

Keep a notebook to jot down your imme- diate responses to each of these works and write questions that you want to discuss in your English classes. Encourage your family and friends to join you in these reading experiences. A number of the books on this list have been made into movies, many of them wonderful in their own right. The Bone Clocks, Climate Change, and Human Attention
humanities Article Seeing What’s Right in Front of Us: The Bone Clocks, Climate Change, and Human Attention Elizabeth Callaway Environmental Humanities Program, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT 84112, USA; [email protected] Received: 1 November 2017; Accepted: 18 January 2018; Published: 26 January 2018 Abstract: The scales on which climate change acts make it notoriously difficult to represent in artistic and cultural works. By modeling the encounter with climate as one characterized by distraction, David Mitchell’s novel The Bone Clocks proposes that the difficulty in portraying climate change arises not from displaced effects and protracted timescales but a failure of attention. The book both describes and enacts the way more traditionally dramatic stories distract from climate connections right in front of our eyes, revealing, in the end, that the real story was climate all along. Keywords: climate change; clifi; digital humanities; literature and the environment Climate change is notoriously difficult to render in artistic and literary works. In the environmental humanities, there is an entire critical conversation around how and whether climate change can be represented in current cultural forms. The challenges often enumerated include the large time scales on which climate operates (Nixon 2011, p. 3), the displacement of climate effects (p. 2) literary plausibility of including extreme events in fiction (Ghosh 2016, p. 9), and the abstract nature of both the concept of climate (Taylor 2013, p. 1) and the idea of collective human action on the planetary scale (Chakrabarty 2009, p. 214). In this article, I argue that David Mitchell’s novel The Bone Clocks proposes a different primary difficulty in representing climate change. -

Regardless if the Writing Center serves mostly undergraduates or graduates, the word “edit” has largely evolved to a narrow definition of copyediting or textual cleanup done by the author at the end of the writing process. Inversely, in trade publishing, editors and agents work with writers at multiple stages of production, providing editorial feedback in the form of reader’s reports and letters. Editing is a rich, intellectual skill of critically engaging with another’s text. What are the implications of differing literacies of editing for two fields dedicated to writing production? This dissertation examines the editorial practices of three leading 20th century editors: Maxwell Perkins, Katharine White, and Ursula Nordstrom. -

It is all tiresome and repetitious. Edward W.Said The Man and the Prize : The announcement of the 2001 Nobel Laureate for Literature in October that year elicited the kind of reaction that was predictable, given the reputation and the choice, that of Sir Vidhiadar Surajparasad Naipaul. Of Indian ancestry, V.S. Naipaul is a grandchild of Hindu Brahmins who found their way to the Caribbean island of Trinidad as indentured labourers to escape the grinding poverty of Utterpradesh. Naipaul’s was just one of a stream of families that were encouraged to migrate to the West Indies from the former British colonies of India and Chinese enclaves in Mainland China. Slavery had been abolished in the British Empire in 1832 and the former African slaves were no longer available to the sugarcane plantations and labour had to be sought from somewhere. In their natural ingenuity the British devised the new institution of indentured labour, which was really a new euphemism for a new form of servitude. Whereas the slaves were forcibly repatriated against their will, the new indentured labourers had the carrot of landownership dangled in front of them, to lure them to places they had no idea of. The new immigrants added a new dimension to an already complex racial situation, by adding the Asian layer to the Carib, European and African admixtures created by Alternatives: Turkish Journal of International Relations, Vol.2, No.3&4, Fall&Winter 2003 243 waves of migration. -

Julian Barnes Julian Barnes' work has been translated into more than thirty languages. In France, he is the only writer to have won both the Prix Medicis (for Flaubert's Parrot) and the Prix Femina (for Talking it Over). In 1993 he was awarded the Shakespeare Prize by the FVS Foundation of Hamburg. In 2011 he was awarded the David Cohen Prize for Literature, and he won the Man Booker Prize for The Sense of An Ending. Elinor Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility
SUMMARY -139- Elinor Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility KITAWAKI Tokuko Sense and Sensibility was Jane Austen’s first novel published in 1811. Its first manuscript was entitled Elinor and Marianne, which was written as the story of two sisters in 1795. This story was rewritten twice in the sixteen years before its publication. Sense and Sensibility is regarded as a debate or a dialogue. Elinor Dashwood is a symbol of sense and Marianne Dashwood is that of sensibility. Jane Austen tried to let sense and sensibility have a dialogue through this novel. In the end of the story we are able to deepen our understand- ing of these two ideas. Elinor is intellectual and prudent, but she is affectionate and her feelings are strong. Marianne is emotional and imprudent, but she is also sensible and clever. We should not think of one as superior to the other. Both Elinor and Marianne are more or less endowed with sense and sensibility. Marianne’s behaviour is based on her own feelings, and she often ignores the feelings of other people. Her slightest consideration of circumstances invites ultimately her sufferings. In spite of Elinor’s advice to pay much attention to formal social activities, Marianne will never listen to her and indulges herself in loving a play boy. She was betrayed by the materialist Willoughby, who was engaged to the wealthy Miss Grey. Marianne suffers from his desertion and becomes seriously ill. Through these sufferings she learns to thank the people around her and behave properly. Elinor is always thinking of the feelings of other people and controls her own strong feelings.
