    SUMMARY -139- Elinor Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility KITAWAKI Tokuko Sense and Sensibility was Jane Austen’s first novel published in 1811. Its first manuscript was entitled Elinor and Marianne, which was written as the story of two sisters in 1795. This story was rewritten twice in the sixteen years before its publication. Sense and Sensibility is regarded as a debate or a dialogue. Elinor Dashwood is a symbol of sense and Marianne Dashwood is that of sensibility. Jane Austen tried to let sense and sensibility have a dialogue through this novel. In the end of the story we are able to deepen our understand- ing of these two ideas. Elinor is intellectual and prudent, but she is affectionate and her feelings are strong. Marianne is emotional and imprudent, but she is also sensible and clever. We should not think of one as superior to the other. Both Elinor and Marianne are more or less endowed with sense and sensibility. Marianne’s behaviour is based on her own feelings, and she often ignores the feelings of other people. Her slightest consideration of circumstances invites ultimately her sufferings. In spite of Elinor’s advice to pay much attention to formal social activities, Marianne will never listen to her and indulges herself in loving a play boy. She was betrayed by the materialist Willoughby, who was engaged to the wealthy Miss Grey. Marianne suffers from his desertion and becomes seriously ill. Through these sufferings she learns to thank the people around her and behave properly. Elinor is always thinking of the feelings of other people and controls her own strong feelings.

Email:[email protected] Abstract:Both The Vicar of Wakefield and Sense and Sensibility deal with marriages in eighteenth-century England. This paper discusses the situation of marriage in that period reflected in these two literature works. It also explores people’s general ideas and attitudes towards marriage, especially the marriage of women of lower social status. By analyzing the marriages demonstrated in these two novels the author made a conclusion that the primary purpose of marriage of the 18th century was financial gain, and that marriage for women at that time was a necessity rather than a choice. Keywords: English news, eighteenth-century England, The Vicar of Wakefield, Sense and Sensibility, Social Status The Vicar of Wakefield is the only novel written by Oliver Goldsmith, which gives the audience a vivid description of people’s attitudes and views towards marriage in eighteenth- century England through the life of a vicar. Published in 1766, the novel reveals marriage situations and the prospects of young ladies through marriage. Shortly after Goldsmith, a remarkable woman writer Jane Austen also tells her marriage stories from a feminine point of view. Her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility, presents us with a vivid and realistic description of marriage and family life at the end of the eighteenth-century and the beginning of the nineteenth-century. Though published in 1811, the novel was written sometime between 1795 and 1796. Two sisters’ experiences and emotional sufferings are displayed in the novel, and their different attitudes towards affection and marriage lead to different rewards.

    Not Said But Shown 423 16. Elinor Dashwood and Lucy Steele ----- Elinor Dashwood is a model of decorum. She is only nineteen (I, i, 6); and thanks to her father’s death and the meanness of her half-brother and his wife (John and Fanny Dashwood), genteel poverty is her appointed lot. But she is good-looking, good natured, well read, and very sensible. These facts are noticed by Edward Ferrars, the brother of her grasping sister-in-law, who shows strong signs of becoming attached to her. Elinor herself tries to live up to the decorous standard established by Samuel Richardson, according to which a girl must not be in love with a young man until he declares himself (cf. I, iv, 21). But Edward is intelligent, bookish and sensible, like herself; so the attraction is mutual. Edward, however, does not declare himself. He seems sometimes to be depressed; and he is surprisingly dubious about accepting an invitation to visit the impoverished Dashwoods at Barton in Devonshire (I, viii, 39). The Dashwoods are the victims of an entail; Edward’s prospects are at the mercy of his mother’s whim — and she does not approve of his desire to enter the Church (I, xix, 102). In Devonshire, Elinor’s sister Marianne (seventeen) has a romantically dramatic encounter with John Willoughby (twenty-five). They fall in love at first sight; but like Edward, Willoughby fails to declare himself. This offers us an interesting study of the virtue of “candour” (which is Jane Austen’s ideal of Christian charity). Elinor wants to be “candid” (I, xv, 79); but she finds it much easier to trust in Edward’s truth and honor than in that of Willoughby.
