VS. Naipaul: A Bibliographical Update (198 7-94) KELVIN JARVIS JLHIS IS A bibliographical update of my V. S. Naipaul: A Selective Bibliography with Annotations: 195J-198J, covering the period 1987-94. Since 1 g87 (when An Enigma of Arrival: A Novel in Five Sections appeared), Naipaul has published three books—A Turn in the South ( 1989), India: A Million Mutinies Now ( 1990), and A Way in the World ( 1994)—and more than 18 substantial pieces, in addition to delivering various lectures and acceptance speeches. This checklist is arranged in six parts. Part I contains Naipaul's most recent writings and comments, listed under three head• ings: published books, articles, and interviews, with entries given chronologically. Part II covers recent bibliographical listings of his work. Part III includes 16 full-length books written about him. Part PV lists articles on him in books, reference volumes, journals, and magazines. Part V has book reviews and critical studies of his individual books. And Part VI itemizes doctoral theses exclu• sively or partly on him. Conference papers have featured prominently in the spate of attention Naipaul continues to generate; these papers are usu• ally quite elusive to trace, particularly if they are not published collectively and within a reasonably short time frame. Thus this checklist omits offerings on Naipaul from conferences and all foreign-language citations. It also excludes newspaper articles with imprints prior to 1987. The Enigma of Arrival spans Naipaul's life in England and echoes a finality in his writing career. The protagonist of this novel writes: "with time passing, I felt mocked by what I had already done; it seemed to belong to a time of vigour, now past for good. -

Regardless if the Writing Center serves mostly undergraduates or graduates, the word “edit” has largely evolved to a narrow definition of copyediting or textual cleanup done by the author at the end of the writing process. Inversely, in trade publishing, editors and agents work with writers at multiple stages of production, providing editorial feedback in the form of reader’s reports and letters. Editing is a rich, intellectual skill of critically engaging with another’s text. What are the implications of differing literacies of editing for two fields dedicated to writing production? This dissertation examines the editorial practices of three leading 20th century editors: Maxwell Perkins, Katharine White, and Ursula Nordstrom. -

But is it really true? Do we get what we deserve? And if so, who decides what is right and what is wrong? Who decides what we should and should not be punished for? In Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things, most of the characters cross moral boundaries. Eventually, they all get punished for doing so. In this novel, Roy presents two kinds of morality. One of them is social morality, which can be defined as what a group thinks is good and right or the way one should behave. The other one is individual morality – what oneself thinks is the right way to act. -

Name: Class: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi By Rudyard Kipling 1893 Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. Kipling’s most popular work is his collection of short stories titled The Jungle Book. “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” is a short story from The Jungle Book about the adventures of a young mongoose. As you read, take notes on how the characters react to danger during the story. At the hole where he went in Red-Eye called to Wrinkle-Skin. Hear what little Red-Eye saith:1 “Nag, come up and dance with death!” Eye to eye and head to head, (Keep the measure, Nag.) This shall end when one is dead; (At thy pleasure, Nag.) Turn for turn and twist for twist — (Run and hide thee, Nag.) Hah! The hooded Death has missed! (Woe2 betide3 thee, Nag!) [1] This is the story of the great war that Rikki-tikki- tavi fought single-handed, through the bath- rooms of the big bungalow in Segowlee "Yellow Mongoose" by Colin Frankland is licensed under CC BY-NC 4 cantonment. Darzee, the tailor-bird, helped him, 2.0. and Chuchundra, the musk-rat, who never comes out into the middle of the floor, but always creeps round by the wall, gave him advice; but Rikki-tikki did the real fighting. He was a mongoose, rather like a little cat in his fur and his tail, but quite like a weasel in his head and his habits. His eyes and the end of his restless nose were pink; he could scratch himself anywhere he pleased, with any leg, front or back, that he chose to use; he could fluff up his tail till it looked like a bottle-brush, and his war-cry, as he scuttled through the long grass, was: “Rikk-tikk-tikki-tikki-tchk!” One day, a high summer flood washed him out of the burrow where he lived with his father and mother, and carried him, kicking and clucking, down a roadside ditch. -

Comparing "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling to Disney's Film Adaptations
Abigail McMahon “I Wan’Na Be Like You”: Comparing The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling to Disney’s The Jungle Book (1967) and The Jungle Book (2016) Faculty Sponsor: Katherine Kittredge, Department of English Many people think that children’s literature is just for a child’s entertainment. They don’t stop to think about the moral lessons that the stories are teaching the children. Little Red Riding Hood teaches kids not to talk to strangers, The Ugly Duckling teaches kids that outer beauty wasn’t the most important thing, and Stone Soup teaches kids the importance of sharing, etc.… The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling is another example to the many lessons that children’s literature teaches kids. What is interesting about this set of stories is how they have been told through the years. The Jungle Books have had many adaptions and retelling of Mowgli’s tale. The most known adaption of Kipling’s stories was Disney’s animated film The Jungle Book (1967) and Disney’s newest live action version of the film, The Jungle Book (2016). The strange thing to consider is that the book and both films, while from the same source material, differ in what they offer to the audience. The original stories tell vignettes of Mowgli’s life as he grows up and what he learns from the other animals. They teach him how to be a friend to all and how to decide when a fight is worth it or not among other things. Though, a lot of the stories in Kipling’s book don’t even focus on Mowgli. -

The Nobel Prize in the Anglophone World MWF-9-10 Instructor: Brian Doherty 35795 Course Overview: Since 1901, the most prestigious international prize for literature has been the Nobel. Quite a few winners have come from the English-speaking world that at one time was considered to be part of the British Commonwealth. The survey of these writers and their concerns will bring us to five continents and into various historical and social terrains. Reading will consist of poetry, drama, novels and short stories, as well as non-fiction (notably the acceptance speeches of the authors covered.) Required Texts: Course Reader with Poems by Rabindranath Tagore, W.B. Yeats, Seamus Heaney, and Rudyard Kipling available in course reader, along with some essays and short stories. J.M. Coetzee. Comparative Literature 1 Comparative Literature Department Website: http://complit.uchicago.edu Program of Study The major in Comparative Literature leads to a BA degree and is designed to attract students who wish to pursue interdisciplinary course work focused on the study of literature, textual artifacts, and translation, written in various languages and in various parts of the world. Some students come to the University of Chicago with a strong background in languages other than English and want to work in two or more literatures (one of which can be English). Some students have a strong interest in literary theory and wish to address poetics, study of genre or translation, and/or questions of transnational circulation and production of knowledge that go beyond the boundaries of national literature offered in other literature departments. Or, some students wish to pursue in-depth study of the interrelationship of literature, culture, and other arts and fields of knowledge, as well as issues that transcend the traditional demarcations of literary history and area studies. Our students work with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to design a plan of course work that will suit their individual goals while taking advantage of the rich offerings of the University. Program Requirements The requirements outlined below are in effect as of Autumn Quarter 2018 and will apply to all students in the Class of 2020 and beyond. Students interested in majoring in Comparative Literature should review the following guidelines and consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Comparative Literature. These guidelines are to assist students in developing a balanced and cohesive plan of study which would be most accommodating and beneficial to the student’s academic development.
