Guidance and further information 56 DDSCP FINAL October 2019 Page 2 of 60 1. Introduction West Park School recognises that we have an important role to play in multi-agency safeguarding arrangements. We are committed to safeguarding children and young people and expect everyone in our school/college to share this commitment. This document outlines West Park School safeguarding policy. It applies to all adults, including volunteers working in or on behalf of the setting. Child protection is defined as safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children by: Protecting children from maltreatment; Preventing impairment of children’s health or development; Protecting children from the risk of radicalisation, exploitation and other harms e.g. drugs, alcohol, gangs, neglect, serious violent crime, sexual or criminal (including county lines) exploitation; Ensuring children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes. Everyone working in, or for our school, takes all welfare concerns seriously and encourages children and young people to talk to us about anything that worries them. We share an objective to help keep children and young people safe by contributing to; Providing a safe environment for children and young people to learn in education settings; Creating a culture of vigilance where we always act in the best interests of the child; Identifying children who may be at risk of radicalisation, in need of extra help, or are suffering or likely to suffer significant harm, and taking the appropriate action, working with other services as needed. We will ensure that parents and our partner agencies are aware of our child protection/ safeguarding policy by ensuring that it is displayed in reception area/s, by raising awareness at initial meetings with parents of new pupils/students and at parent teacher meetings and ensuring that it is on the school/college website. The school/college website will also have information about how parents/children/other agencies can contact the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and their deputy and include their availability in school holidays. Policy Aims The aim of this policy is to outline how the school will: Promote a positive school/college ethos where children can learn, feel secure and be safe. Prevent unsuitable people working with children and young people. Promote safe practice and challenge poor and unsafe practice. Identify instances in which there are grounds for concern about a child's welfare, and initiate or take appropriate action to keep them safe. Contribute to effective partnership working between parents and all those involved with providing services for children and young people. The policy will be reviewed annually as a minimum, unless an incident or new legislation or guidance suggests the need for an earlier date of review. DDSCP FINAL October 2019 Page 3 of 60 Context This policy enables West Park School to carry out our functions with a view to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children under sections 175 and 157 of the Education Act (2002). Staff are trained to notice signs and symptoms of the different types of abuse and they are aware of and follow the procedures for reporting any concerns they have to the school’s safeguarding team. Pupils are aware that they can talk to relevant members of staff at any time about any concerns or if they feel the need to disclose information pertaining to them or their peers. Pupils are regularly involved in PSHE lessons, assemblies and workshops from outside providers that cover and include advice about dealing with issues associated with safeguarding themselves and their peers in school, at home and in the community. Issues that may arise in school are reviewed and monitored regularly by the relevant staff and training of both staff and pupils is regular and ongoing. As well as this, in order to protect our pupils we have a Prevent action plan/risk assessment and are part of the Stopping Domestic Abuse Together initiative. These can be found via Firefly and is also located on the Policy and Procedures page of www.ddscp.org.uk. The school/college will adhere to the Derby and Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Partnership procedures. Multi-agency working The safeguarding partners in Derby and Derbyshire have a shared and equal duty to make arrangements to work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children in a local area. The local area safeguarding partners are Derby City Council, Derbyshire County DDSCP FINAL October 2019 Page 4 of 60 Council, Derbyshire Constabulary, Derby and Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning group and Tameside and Glossop Clinical Commissioning group. The partners will agree on ways to co- ordinate their safeguarding services, acting as a strategic leadership group in supporting and engaging others and implementing local and national learning including from serious child safeguarding incidents. The school/college will work in partnership with the Derby and Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Partnership (DDSCP) and follow relevant local arrangements as published.     School report Inspection of a good school: West Park School West Road, Spondon, Derby, Derbyshire DE21 7BT Inspection dates: 10–11 March 2020 Outcome West Park School continues to be a good school. What is it like to attend this school? Pupils are proud of their school. They appreciate and understand the high expectations leaders and staff have of their behaviour and learning. They value the very positive behaviour in lessons and around the school. Rarely does poor behaviour disturb their learning. At breaktimes, pupils’ conduct is mature and sociable. They take responsibility for their behaviour and do not need a school bell to mark out the school day. The school is calm. Pupils are focused and ambitious. Pupils benefit from a range of opportunities. They understand the importance of whole- school events such as the eisteddfod, charity events and house competitions. They are looking forward to the diversity week. Pupils are respectful of each other and staff. They are welcoming, polite and look out for each other. Pupils understand what bullying is. They say it is very rare and know that staff help them deal with it quickly and effectively if it occurs. Pupils feel safe and are happy to be part of the school. Parents and carers are overwhelmingly positive about the school. They recognise the school’s high expectations and inclusive nature. They comment positively about the way the school has developed and strengthened since the arrival of the new headteacher. What does the school do well and what does it need to do better? The school is very well led and managed.

Background 2. The Al Madinah Free School is a 4 – 16, co-educational Islamic faith all-through school. In September 2012, the school will be located in a temporary building (Norman House, Friary Street, Derby, DE1 1AN) until Midland House is ready in January 2013. It originally planned to open with an intake of 300 pupils (60 pupils in Reception, 60 in Year 1, 120 in Year 7 and 60 in Year 8). However, as the temporary building will only be able to accommodate around 270 pupils EFA have advised the Trust not to go over this number. The school will operate at full capacity from 2018. Once it reaches full capacity it will have 1,020 pupils. 3. We do not believe we need to assess the impact on local schools near Norman House as this site will be vacated in six months; the areas pupils will come from (Arboretum and Normanton) will not change as a result. 4. Once the school is at capacity it will be based on two sites. We are in discussion with the British Railways Board Residuary (BRBR) to acquire one of their sites in Derby to host the primary school.
